The food was brilliant, service - efficient, we had a great time, thank you!
Not the best food and it took a long time between courses, but the place has a good ambiance. I would come back for drinks.
I used to go here all the time and it was amazing. I booked for dinner at 7pm for my partners birthday and asked for a nice seat. When greeted the gentleman said we could sit anywhere we liked and didn’t receive my special request and when we sat down in the “4 people only” seat he said he would have to relocate us if 4 people come in. The whole restaurant was nearly empty. I said ok. The service was terrible and the staff could not understand what I was asking them nor give us recommendations. Poor/ no English. Our bill was 200 for two people -Food was very expensive for a below average experience.
The food and drinks over priced. One of the worst establishments that I’ve ever been to in Melbourne for the price.
Service horrible, the waiter forgot the order. Too long to bring the food out.
Edamame was brought out uncooked, unflavoured.
Service standards compared to other venues was very low.
Example: bringing water out in glasses.
Instead, bring the glasses out and pour the water out of a nice vase.
We were sat at a communal table in the bar next to a large loud party. It took 35 minutes to receive menus. The food was outstanding, portions tiny for the money and not made of anything super fancy.
It’s a shame, I liked the drinks, loved the flavours but the service was a major let down. It took 4 hours from sitting to last course of a 5 course ‘banquet’ more like a snacklet. The vegetarian first course was a plate of crisps....
Food was really good but worst service I’ve ever received in my life. Staff were rude, ignored us, debated us on what we ordered, didn’t communicate with each other, and were just overall shocking. Do not go here on a date! I went with friends but definitely an extremely awkward experience. Would not reccomend if you want a relaxed romantic time
We were given our cocktails which were really good. Then never approached again about having food which was the main reason we came. After 30 mins I went over and asked for some food menus. The food that came out was unexplained and no further inquiry as to whether we may want more or not or deserts or drinks after dinner.
I paid and we let ourselves out.
For a place which I’d heard good things, it was completely underwhelming and I wouldn’t return. I’m sure it could be nice but our service was terrible bordering rude and I was left with a bad taste in my mouth.
Fantastic restaurant, lovely wait staff and delicious food.
A very enjoyable evening! The perfect evening to have a table by the window and look out onto the park. The food, the wine and the service was superb. My work colleague from Sydney was suitably impressed.
I enjoyed the ambience of this place, the five course degustation and paired drinks was of very good value. Service was professional and friendly, and I liked how it felt a little exclusive to be buzzed into the restaurant.
My wife and I were recommended Hihou a while back by friends in the hospitality industry - specifically, people who know that we love sake. It took way too long to try this spot out, and perhaps that didn't work in our favour, but, I would say we are glad we finally got around to it.
However, Hihou is not the sort of spot you can hunker down in for hours at a time. The chairs at the front window aren't comfortable, and there are a lot of wooden stools elsewhere; reading reviews by others I get the feeling that towards the back of the bar/restaurant there may be a more comfortable area, but, we didn't see that, so, I can't really comment.
Hihou has a great bar -- it's striking visually, and the contents are also noteworthy. They seem to have gone in big with the Enomatic by-the-glass dispenser, which, in the case of sake, was a bit of a shame -- there were very few sakes available by the bottle, which is what we were after. You're pushed towards glasses, 100ml and 300ml instead.
The menu at Hihou is basic, but has some definite winners (we quite liked the dumplings) - however, and this was my fault, I was under the impression that Hihou was a restaurant which had a bar. It's not. It's a bar, and generally designed (at least in our experience) to get you in and out.
Hihou would shine as a quick-drink destination, a small bite to eat, but if you're looking for a long and comfortable meal with great sake, you'll find better options elsewhere.
Will we be back? Maybe. Staff was excellent, service was great, but we definitely prefer a slightly different experience.
Great bar, but the food was a sad, and at its best, a average story.
Nothing actually wrong, eg the tuna was exellent itselves, but the taste was just boring. We would probably be back for drinks, but never again for food. The only thing that impressed, was the tuna cigars, wich was exellent!
Discovered this place through a friend only a few months back and have been back multiple times since. Great sharing food, interesting cocktails. Amazing ambience.
Hidden gem in plain sight. Ring to bell to be let into a very cool space. Upstairs bar gas a great range of the finest Japan beverages... And a tapas style Japanese menu. Oh, and great staff!
Lovely atmosphere, really tasty quality food but over priced and small servings we were really disappointed. The bar is nice for a drink but we won't be back for food.
A good selection of Japanese wine and sake. The warm plum wine is super good for winter. Food is delicious but very small portioned. Better for late night drink.
We thought we were coming for dinner in the restaurant as booked, but we were sitting in the bar area with a different menu from expectation.
There was a lack of service from staff, we had to request to get food menu and to order drinks.
This experience would have been 'just ok' if we had reserved a table knowing it was bar seating and menu, overall very dissapointed.
We found the service a bit of a let down- it wasn't bad because the staff were professional and knowledgeable and pleasant but they were slow, we kept having to get their attention. Maybe they needed more staff on. The food itself - gyoza and tuna were delicious, the rest was average, buckwheat pancakes in particular were cold and rubbery. The ambience/ lighting/ decor were all very nice and felt up market. Probably a good place to go for a drink but not for a meal.
Great bar with fantastic selection of Sake, Japanese Plum wine, cocktails, decent Wine list, Japanese whisky etc. food is exquisite - coffee infused salmon sashimi orgasmic amongst others. Sophisticated fit out with intimate spaces. I'm from Sydney so just wish it was here. Damn you Melbourne!
We returned here to celebrate our anniversary - it was a lovely evening! The staff are very attentive and the food is fantastic - a hidden gem. Request a table near the window for great views across Fitzroy Gardens.
Booked for a celebration, service, ambience, style, location and food and cocktails- wine - liquor all fantastic
Great place to unwind. Impeccable service and sophisticated setting.
Lovely restuarant with a great set up, particularly the couch area. Good Japanese plum wine. Great place to drink and talk.
Amazing food, amazing value for money, great service! Will definitely be back again! Perfect afternoon!
A friend introduced me to this place. Loved it so much I told all my friends about it. We were seated upstairs at the back. Intimate enough but spacious for 4 people. We ordered 1 of each item from the menu. Food was fab but I'd avoid the chicken dish. Nothing special. They also have a great range of whiskey which we loved.
Very small portion sizes for the sharing dishes. We ordered 4-5 and left still feeling hungry.
Amazing little bar with great atmosphere and perfect selection of Japanese whiskey and food
Great food, great atmosphere, one of the city's best Japanese places in my opinion. Simple, small, interesting plates and great service.
Great service and ambiance but food was average.
I did not feel overly welcomed or comfortable when entering the premises. The place was quiet, and felt cold in terms of atmosphere (not temperature). We were not greeted with warm smiles which was the very first impression we got.
This was my second time visiting HiHou and it didn't disappoint. Food, service and cocktails were exceptional. Special thanks to the staff for providing a lovely birthday cake for our special occasion event. Lovely addition to our evening!
Hihou has a tasty selection of nibbles and sides to go with their excellent selection of Sake, Plum wines, Umeshu and cocktails.I love going to Hihou to lounge around on their couches and try a new tasty Sake.
Lovely decor and ambience. Was reminded of a Tokyo bar. Tub chairs uncomfortable so opt for high stools if possible
I met a colleague at Hihou for a business meeting, but we wanted to treat ourselves to something nice as it was a bit of a celebration. It floored me totally. It has a real mystique about it. The service was fantastic, food incredible, and they gave me three of best vodka martinis I've ever had. Our table overlooked the Treasury Gardens, and could talk easily while we grazed our way through the shared menu. It was perfect.
Lovely servers, very helpfulYummy snacky foodsExciting cocktail list
We went earlier then our booking time but staff are more than accommodating. We were then taken to the lounge area which is super cool, Staff were very knowledgeable in recommending drinks. Such a cool place!
Great Melbourne bar experience. Everything from the obscure entrance to interior design, the impeccable service to tasty dishes, and an absolutely fantastic drinks menu, this was a great Friday night out!! The waiters are great - there was a guy who helped us pick out sake and took the time to explain how the sake grading system works, and "Hiruko" makes the best gin cocktails. We were sitting at the bar and just ordered what she was making for other people, they looked that good!
Amazing whisky and matched Japanese delicacies. Highly recommended.
We had the Suntory Whisky Degustation which was fabulous, we loved the intimate booth setting. Food was amazing.
Great service and great staff. Great whisky selection
