Lovely venue, well organised, swift, professional service, Super food!
Great food once again, we returned after a visit earlier in September, and won 25% off in their prize draw. Fantastic food, the only points that lower the rating for us were that service was very slow and we had to keep catching people’s eyes for drinks and the bill etc, and that even with 25% off the bill was quite high. Would recommend for the food though!
Lovely eating experience- great menu, excellent service
We’ve eaten here twice in the past month for their Wednesday steak night and the food has been incredible both times and the steak night menu is excellent value. I’ve been a couple of times in the past too after being recommended by a friend and now I always tell others about you! We will definitely be back and thank you for always providing us with a lovely evening out!
Wonderful meal, great service and very accommodating when wishing to add to the menu. Friendly staff.
Great food great staff good wine what more can you ask
Food was amazing as set menu good value. Service was excellent. Would 100% recommend. Will be returning.
Today I had the set menu at the Hengist... Brilliant value at £18 for two courses. I had the roasted peaches, yummily caramelized together with shaved fennel, goats cheese mouse and pecans... absolutely scrummy... Followers by slow braised ox cheek.. gorgeous.. It just fell apart and as it was a tad cooler today perfect with garlic mash and green beans... Thoroughly recommend.
Fantastic steaks as usual. Waitress was outstanding- nothing too much trouble. Can’t wait to go again
I always enjoy the food & cocktails at the Hengist. Service is always amazing can’t really fault it
We have visited the Hengist a number of times and always felt valued and welcome. The food and service is always excellent. We recently dined on the Wednesday Steak night. I would highly recommend this!
Excellent venue. Food was very good. Problem with the fryer so delay to food arriving hence the score. Otherwise excellent and will return again
Great food and service. Music was at a great level as well so you could have a conversation. Only 3 tables in at the same time but would have been nicer to have been spread a bit more out to make it feel fuller and so you couldn’t easily overhear the other tables. Apart form that servers where great and attentive, food was excellent and great value for money. Will definitely be returning again and recommending to others. Great work!
We are regular customers of the Hengist - both using their delivery service and dining in the restaurant. Our previous experiences have always been good. However, last week my wife and I booked dinner for our wedding anniversary. Although the staff are friendly and helpful, it seems they are untrained in certain areas. Upon ordering wine, previously we would have had the chance to taste the wine, this time it was just poured. For a restaurant of this standard and pricing bracket you expect the service levels to be high. That wasn't the real problem though - during dinner a group of very drunk men entered, didn't order food, and proceeded to swear, congregate at the bar area (at a time of Covid), fell off chairs onto the floor they were so inebriated. It ruined the evening, and frankly is not good for the reputation of this restaurant. There was no sign of management taking any steps to manage this behaviour. My wife and I paid the bill and left before we ordinarily would have done so.
Great Sunday roast, a little bit pricey but worth it however the other options if you don’t like a roast with trimmings (gnocchi) was very plain and expensive (£17).
Lovely Sunday roast
Had a beautiful Sunday roast. We had mixed meat, slice of turkey, beef, pork and lamb, all were cooked to perfection, so tender. Veg was delicious and lovely potatoes. We use the Hengist quite often and it never disappoints. Highly recommend!
Served wrong drinks and sold out of lobster When ordering surf & turf was given prawns as a substitute
A fantastic evening with friends, celebrating a birthday. Amazing food and a beautiful atmosphere. We will definitely be returning.
The quality of the main course was excellent, it's what you would expect in relation to the prices. The major issue is the quality and price of the desserts, obviously prepared by the serving staff or a junior and not what you should expect at a quality restaurant. If I had known what I was going to get I would not have bothered with the dessert and just popped into my local shop on the way home to buy a microwave pud. So all in all this place is half decent, it could be whole decent if someone took some more care in the execution of the entire experience.
The staff were excellent, the booking system works fine, the premises are nice and clean, the atmosphere was relaxed, the alcohol prices were very fair- just failed badly on desserts, such a ridiculous thing to get so wrong.
Nice environment but we were concerned about hygiene. The staff were not wearing masks and the toilets did not seem to be monitored - there were paper towels scattered over the floor - presumably to soak up water.
Never disappointed here. They have a more relaxed summer menu but it is still presented amazingly and tastes fabulous. Very covid secure with social distancing and hand sanitiser. Will
Be back again soon!!
We had high expectations but were sadly v disappointed. the décor was very dated and uncomfortable, we thought it was more like an indian resturant upstairs not how a country resturant should look. the outside is beautiful but definately not continued inside. absolutely no ambiance. menu was limited and nothing for a vegetarian, the one dish was sold out and we sent one main back as cold and inedible. limited social distancing nothing obviously in place to limit COVID spread. Staff were friendly and spent a long time chatting with customers at the tables. Most seemed very immature and some too busy messing around with each other rather than ensuring clients were looked after. We wasted an evening
Went here the last day of the eat out to help out scheme. Can’t say I share the same concerns others have expressed with regards to safety, and thought it was ok to be honest. The food was good, it’s a little on the expensive side but was good quality. The staff were attentive and friendly, and would go back.
Came for a special meal and there was no other choice than EatOutToHelpOut menu with very simple food (tapas dishes for starters, eg plain king prawns...). Staff seemed overwhelmed and not really attentive (drinks not served but still billed at first), with no Covid distancing/mask etc. Real disappointment compared to our last visit pre-lockdown.
We came here on the Bank Holiday Monday on the last day of the Eat out to Help out and the restaurant was very busy. We were called before and told it was BBQ and Tapas menu which wasn't a problem.
We sat upstairs which was soulless and the plastic tables gave it a canteen fell, but I guess that's because they can wipe the tables down, we noticed on walking in crumbs all over the floor which doesn't look good.
We had 3 tapas for £15 to start, which were tiny portions, salt and pepper squid with no flavour, 4 chicken wings out of the microwave and houmous all not very nice, we were then surprised at the prices for the BBQ as a Beef Skewer was £19.50, Chicken £18.50 these were served with flat bread, Tsatsiki, a tiny salad and a tiny portion of overcooked bland Bulgar wheat, when we asked if the beef could be prepared rare we were told that it couldn't be guaranteed as it is BBQd not sure why that makes a difference and when it arrived it was of course medium/well done, overcooked, bland and dry as a bone! We also ordered a portion of Sweet Potato fries to go with it which were straight out of the freezer and were cold!
We have been to the restaurant many times and this woas the worst food we have ever had and also felt that prices had been inflated perhaps because of the government offer and it certainly didn't offer value for money even with £10 off as the quality of the food was poor, we left feeling very disappointed and wouldn't rush back.
It was our first time at the Hengist and I was really looking forward to it. Prior to attending I was contacted to say due to it being a bank holiday monday there would be a different menu which I was happy to accept. On arrival we found there was only 2 choices for a main course kebabs or a roast. I chose the beef roast and although it was very good I thought they could have managed more of a selection. One of the reasons we chose the Hengist was part of the eat out to help out and belive they could have provided more value. Not sure we would go back again.
We had a fantastic friendly waitress and enjoyed the garden. The bbq was a little cold and our table was very close to the one behind which meant the daughter of the people on that table kept brushing past my daughter and bumping her, not great social distancing. We will be back though.
We waited 1 hour and 30 minutes for our main meal and when it came the meat was cold. We complained they took our drinks and started off the bill but it was still £55 for two cold dinners. I have always liked the Hengist but we won’t be going back
Unfortunately even though it didn't seem overly busy we had to wait a long time for our food and it was difficult to understand what food and drink was on offer as the waitress was not very forthcoming.
Bar B Q food outdoor seating, very attentive friendly staff and lush food and drink.
Love the choice of guns and the waitresses advice on what is good and complimentary with our choice of food.
Bar B Q was all premium skewers and hallumi option or roast dinners - perfect for a bank holiday warm but overcast day.
We had never been here before and absolutely loved it! Wonderful ambiance, delicious food and cocktails and friendly staff!! Will definitely be back!
This was a very disappointing Experience I was so looking forward to visit, to have a great dining experience. Not the case, Cold food, not even warm, which had to be sent back which meant I was eating on my own, we had said not to bother with another meal as my partner had gone past it. No one came to tell us what was happening and then another meal turned up. Overpriced unmanaged establishments with no recognition of the bad dining experience. Would never go back!
We’ve always liked the Hengist and enjoyed the meal. However, having just looked at other reviews I wish I had looked before going. Covid precautions were virtually non existent seeing only one sanitiser tucked behind reception, not single use menus and waiters/ waitresses not wearing any PPE. They also did not stand away when taking orders. Every table appeared to be in use and certainly were closer than 1 metre in places. Even closer contact when squeezing between tables on exiting. It’s left me feeling anxious. So, we won’t be returning until after Covid or if they improve.
Good variety on the menu. Food was well presented. Helpful staff. The Hengist is our ‘go to’ local restaurant for special occasions. Recommend.
Unable we to honour the groupon we purchased so paid full price. Food quite good but after recommendations of ‘excellence’ I think I was just hoping for more. No one came to take our payment at the end of the night which was a shame - and dont follow the signs to the entrance, they’re wrong. In general an ok night but nothing special.
Great procedures in place felt very safe. Service was excellent. Food as good as expected Recommend
Great service and lovely food. Everything very professional
Lovely meal, good value for money on the steak night.
Not up to usuall standard. Chips over cooked and hard. Steak below par.
Table leaned a lot and plates slide on surface so was hard to cut up food.
