Best steak of our lives. Amazing chips!!!! Will definitely be back on a monday for the steak deals!!!
Honestly the food we received was absolutely vile at the hengist on Thursday. There was little to no vegetarian options, in terms of mains I had ONE option. In this day and age you would think it would be a little more inclusive. The amount we paid for what we received was below par completely, my duck was so tough I left it entirely and not one staff member came to check on how our food was. My sister in law ordered medium steak, she received medium rare to rare. Our drinks were wrong multiple times and honestly it was just a joke. Not happy at all, we had many complaints and nothing was done to rectify the situation.
I have been dining at the Hengist for many years now, I have not ever been disappointed with the quality of the food, nor the waitress service. It is good value for money and I look forward to going back again soon.
First time we have visited after hearing a few recommendations from friends. We were not disappointed
Superb service, food was outstanding and will definitely be returning. Lovely touch for my partners birthday with a little treat at the end. Thank you!
Had a lovely lunch here with friends on 30th December.
Food was very good and the steak special with wine was good value.
Staff were very helpful & attentive.
We will definitely visit again
Based on our recent experience be no I wouldn’t recommend. Service was painfully slow and the set menu wasn’t great. We’d rebooked with you as our first experience dining with you for a Sunday roast was amazing, for food, service and value, but Thursdays service was dire and we waited almost an hour for our mains.
Several years ago we dined at the Hengist and it was excellent fine dining in all respects. Last Saturday was a major disappointment with poor service and food not satisfactory and over priced. We will never visit the restaurant in the future.
Lovely food, enjoyed the ambiance and great deal on the lunch menu. Will be returning in January.
A lovely relaxed Sunday lunch, the mackerel pate was delicious but was served with only two small slices of bread, way insufficient for the amount of pate served. We did ask for more but felt we should have had to. Although very nice we did feel that the Eton Mess had too much cream to meringue and not enough fresh fruit. It did get quite sickly towards the end of the dish. Overall though very enjoyable and will definitely be returning.
Very expensive, the quality was not worth what we paid for. No information on the meals so ordered sides but didn’t need to do a waste of money.
Excellent food and service , this is one of my favourite restaurants, lovely atmosphere and the food although not cheap, is very good, highly recommended
A treat for my husband
Been wanting to visit this restaurant for ages. We were not disappointed. Beautiful 3 course sunday lunch. Fresh veg not frozen. Good portion sizes. Good service
It is some time since my last visit and was very disappointed that the food and service levels have gone downhill.
Very difficult to assess after one rather strange visit. Arrived 6.30p.m. to find around a dozen diners seated. Nice ambience, very comfy seating and staff very personable. .
Ordered a Rose Sancerre only to find it had a strange taste so was rejected. Next bottle of same wine also ‘corked’ so rejected again in favour of a Chapel Down Rose. Artisan bread bought to table was nice but then waited an hour after ordering until mains were bought to the table which was a surprise as we had not had our potted crab starters!!! As main meal ready and getting late we decided to forego starters. Main course was plentiful and reasonably tasty although the belly of pork main lacked a crispy crackling finish and one side veg was cold. Desserts were also bit disappointing. One looked like a Millionnaires Chocolate Tart from Sainsburys with a blob of ice cream Not really worth the £7 menu price although we were given for free as a gesture for the missing starters. The festive Eton Mess was a nice idea but fruit seemed only very lightly marinated in the mulled wine. Did prompt me to make my version next day which was better. On the plus side staff were very nice and apologised sincerely for the missing starters although we were not actually offered an explanation as to what had happened. Restaurant also accepted Tastecard on 2 for 1 basis so if we had been given 3 courses bill excluding wine and water would have been a reasonable £45 with 10% service added automatically. So basically hard to assess and can only give it 3 stars on evidence of 1st visit. Lovely Staff and ambience and fact can use Tastecard will see us giving this establishment a 2nd chance.
A most pleasant Sunday lunchtime, would certainly come back.
Generally good, service fine if a little slow at times, prices about right for the quality of the food.
Sadly gone down hill since last visit. Food wasn’t great and for what it was it’s massively overpriced. Facilities were poor and filthy.
Food was very tasty but starter salad was very small for the price... Staff very attentive... There were no hand towels in the gents did mention to a member of staff then later still no towels
The Monday evening menu experience is good.
Steaks were excellent, the rest of our party enjoyed the food & environment.
Friendly & patient staff.
Food is good but choice is quite limited excellent service and a nice ambiance
Excellent as usual great family meal and night out.
Lovely Sunday lunch.
It was nice not to be to close to the people on the next table.
Food didn’t meet the standard of the price, lacked seasoning, I had the crab starter needed seasoning and a squeeze of lemon to lift it and putting texture of avocado with the starter, which was a slice of avocado didn’t meet the description. Also had the burger which was very dry and tasteless, but chips where great, pudding was excellent, I’ve been to lots of fine dining restaurants, and unfortunately this is far from it.
It was a special occasion and a restaurant we have wanted to dine at for twenty years. We won’t be going back. The staff and ambiance were excellent. Our starter, desserts and wine were exceptional. As it was a special occasion (husbands retirement after 45 years police service) we wanted to push the boat out. We ordered the chateaubriand at £75 to share. We were somewhat surprised to find us sharing one mushroom and one tomato and a very small bowl of chips but even more disappointed to find the meat had a tough vein and we left quite a bit of the meat as it was impossible to eat - the blunt steak knives didn’t help! We do appreciate that it’s difficult to see when cooking if there is a vein or sinew but it was clear from our plates and the chewed lumps I had to spit out that the meat was poor. We paid our bill (over £200) and then the waitress asked if everything was ok to which I quietly advised that we were disappointed with the main course. She said she would tell her manager and we half expected, which I don’t think was unreasonable for the manager to see us - it was hardly busy. We had paid the bill and did not expect a discount but wanted to acknowledge our disappointment, especially as we had been asked. No one came and after a while we quietly left. It seemed such a shame as we really had been excited about our visit , but the meat, vegetable portions and then lack of customer courtesy left us feeling that overall we had not had a special experience. Incidentally my husband went on a butchery course the following day and the butcher was surprised that the meat was as described and said that was unusual - he wondered if it wasn’t actually chateaubriand and said that if the cut is not taken from precisely the right spot it can be difficult to eat. He prepares meat for the Swan , West Malling and we will go there for future special occasions.
Lovely evening from the moment we arrived and were greeted warmly at reception to second we left. Attentive service and delicious food and top notch cocktails! Thank you
A thank you meal to my friends for all the support they have given me recent. This was made special not only by the food but our waitress. A lovely lady who was so helpful and friendly.
It was our anniversary dinner. We had been recommended The Hengist and it exceeded our expectations
Great evening. Wine at £9 per glass a bit more than I would usually expect to pay though.
Had a wonderful birthday lunch with friends a little disappointed that one of the starters was mixed up but another drink resolved that.
Food was excellent staff very attentive and friendly.
I was willing this place to be better than it was. Nice sounding menu, but sadly some of the dishes didn't live up to expectations (if a restaurant kicks off by serving amuse bouche you expect a certain quality of food to follow, and sadly it didn't). Extremely long wait before our mains came out (probably ~30 mins). Decor is so-so. Overall this place feels like it can't live up to its own expectations of itself. Would return if someone else booked the venue, but I won't be booking again myself.
I Booked a Cream Tea On Groupon, and I clicked on the link for a Sparkly cream tea for my friends 60th Birthday surprise, When we got there we was told that we should have preordered we can’t get cream teas on a Sunday, I was so Dissapointed as I was really looking forward to showing her the old fashioned pub I chose that venue particularly as it looked exactly what my friend would like she loves old fashioned buildings like Tudors etc; Then we decided to go for the Roast and mine was ok but my friends had to go back twice because the roast potatoes were like hard boiled and not crispy or even tasted like roast potatoes the Veg was not very nice either looked like yesterday’s leftovers and didn’t taste too good either.
I explained to the waitress about the whole thing she was not very sympathetic and my friend only ate a Yorkshire pudding and her meat which was nice, I felt she should have had her meal reduced but there was not even a mention of a discount . And I asked for a seat near a window please they put us upstairs by a small window right under a noisy speaker so we couldn't hear each other speak.
It was such a shame it has given me a bad taste in my mouth to go back and try a cream tea.
Overpriced food that arrived full of fat and minus the listed salad. Service was poor with unused glasses left on the table and despite asking the table was not wiped clean. Noisy diners added to a miserable experience.
Great service, fab food and a lovely atmosphere . I’d recommend it!
We go at least once a month for the Monday night steak deal , can’t be beaten !!!! Beautiful restaurant, gentle service , special place . The bread and butter and oil and balsamic vinegar is fantastic. Love it !!!!
Best Sunday Roast I’ve ever eaten, great service and great atmosphere.
Roast beef was excellent. Great amount of veg, delicious potatoes and the beef was perfectly cooked and tender: a rarity!
I wound have given 5 stars if it wasn’t for the starter. I’m not sure if the rest of it fell off the plate before serving but one tiny cod ball was not enough for the price. Three would have been adequate. It was cooked nicely though.
Would highly recommend the roast, as it’s the best we’ve had in Kent for a long time.
I visited the restaurant on Saturday 19th October with my girlfriend and we sat downstairs, the atmosphere was very nice, the starter I had was the Mackerel which was ok. The main course was Rump of Lamb, this had a hard crust to it which was exstreemly salty, I drunk nearly a whole jug of water with it and it made the whole meal feel ruined.
I didn't finish the meal, I spoke to the waitress and told her the reason why and she went away to speak to someone, when she came back she apologised and offered me a free drink or dessert, but didn't explain why the Lamb was so salty.
It was a shames it was a special occasion and it was let down by the meal, I have visited the restaurant many times and this was the first time I have had to complain about the food.
It would have been helpful if your waiter had known that "cod bon bons" were in fact glorified fish cakes. If you must invent names for dishes at least explain what they are. Having said that they were very tasty & for a lunch the portions were just right. Thank you.
Also - not the restaurant's fault but parking was quite a walk away when it rains.
