Hen Quarter - Alexandria
Sunday brunch + Southern vibe = YUM! My Richmond-raised friend voted thumbs-up on the Shrimp and Grits, always a rough thing to get right by Southern standards. I feasted on the buffet, especially the eggs Benedict, my brunch go-to. And what's not to like about warm blueberry cobbler for dessert? Eat, snack your lips, and tell Mama you're sorry for doing so.
I love this place. Convenient location, great service, good food and beverages. I recommend Hen Quarter often and will continue to support this business.
Went here for brunch on a Sunday. Made reservations and we were one of 4 groups in the whole restaurant. Ordered the buffet - the food was cold and not replenished the whole time we were there. No one was available at the omelet bar or the carving station. Very disappointed.
The food was delicious and the atmosphere lively!
The food was good but the prices were somewhat high. The buffet was reasonable but you had to pay an additional $12 for add on such as shrimp and grits. You also cannot get these items unless you purchase the buffet. The "bottomless" mimosas were a good deal but they were slow bringing them out. We waited an hour and only had 1 round when we paid $15
Don’t sit outside. I felt neglected & the ambiance wasn’t nearly as great as it was inside.
Good- had the 2 pc chicken dinner. A thigh and wing wasn’t enough meat.
Food tasted great- just not enough!
Good choice for dinner among the many restaurants along King St. Good Southern cooking. Fresh and great tasting. Biscuits were yummy. So was the shrimp and grits. My fried chicken was also great. Noise level was high due to trivia night. Would have been nice if they put trivia in the bar and not in one of the dining rooms.
We've dined at Hen Quarter regularly, and enjoy the food, but the service during our most recent visit was exceptionally slow and spotty. Visits by our wait staff were only every 25-30 minutes. We had to find a manager to ask for our check as we had not seen anyone in almost half an hour. We had planned on ordering dessert as well, but because of the long wait and our somewhat limited time table, we had to forgo, (which also means lost business for HQ). I'd hesitate to return if I were tight on time or wanted to impress my dinner guests.
Buffet was pitiful. Half the serving dishes were empty. The food that was presented was cold. Never found a biscuit. Overall, very disappointing.
Thank you for leaving us this review, Anita. We are so sorry to hear about your recent experience at Hen Quarter and we would like to apologize for the food options that were presented to you. While our weekend brunch is one of our most popular features, what you described is inexcusable. We apologize. We take guest satisfaction very seriously here at Hen Quarter and we will use your comments to improve. Thanks again for the feedback.
It was an awesome experience the only down fall was that it was freezing in there.
The Southern Sampler is the best!! It is me and my fiance' all time favorite dish. Highly recommend! Also, we highly recommend the green fried tomatoes appetizer. Thank you Hen Quarter for making my birthday memorable with the peach cobbler. It's a to die for dessert. Yummy! Love that you get free dessert on your birthday; plus I got a $10 gift card to go towards my next visit. Top-notch dining experience.
We really wanted to love this place, our server seemed quite busy even though it didn't seem to be a lot of people and I'm not sure if there are prepping for a big event later in the evening or when it happened earlier in the day. We had a party of eight we were shoved in the booth in the back in the corner in the dark so to speak and it just didn't feel like they really cared that we were there. Our server was a sweetheart and brought out a birthday cobbler to my brother but we had dishes stacked, no one really checked on us, and I called to find out about the food allergies but when we got there the story seem to change a bit. It just wasn't what I was expecting. We probably won't go back.
Hen Quarter offers a very limited menu for Saturday and Sundays, until 3pm. I took my mother here for Mother's Day, and overall, we enjoyed the food. Our waiter was very MIA - we ordered our drinks from like 2 different people and he finally took one order of our drinks, the third round of mimosas. The Brunch itself, is ok - the selection is varied, with sausage, bacon, mac and cheese, cheese grits, fried chicken, waffles, egg station, salad, a few desserts and a few other selections. I say ok, because the way they maintain the food, is a little harsh it either dries out the food and/or over cooks it. The guy doing the omelettes was very good and funny. Now they charge $30 per adult for this brunch, then additional $15 for the "bottomless mimosa" HOWEVER it is 50 cents PER refill!! Soooo not really bottomless mimosas. It was a nice experience _ wouldn't spend that kind of money again but if I did , I would stick to water.
Would certainly visit again for brunch. This was my first time at Hen Quarter, and I wanted to take my wife to a good brunch buffet. Ambience is casual, and as some reviews indicated previously, service can be a little slow at time, but always friendly. I made a reservation for 10:30 since I assumed there would be a crush of people for Mother's Day wknd. Arrived about 30 minutes early, and were seated immediately. In fact, it appeared we were among the first diners there. It started to get busy about 11am. If you are there when it's busier, I imagine it'll be tough navigating the buffet area as it is a bit tight. Food options were pretty good- all your typical breakfast meats, omelette station, waffles (not made to order unfortunately), grits, fried chicken, steamed shrimp, carving station. Extensive selection of desserts including some tasty macarons. Everything was well enjoyed. Price is good, particularly since kids are free, which I'm glad as my three year old hardly ate anything. They do charge $3.5 for average and warm (not hot) coffee which is disappointing.
My group was celebrating my daughter's 21st birthday. I had come by earlier in the day to make sure that staff knew it was a surprise, especially since there was a shift change involved. When we got there the hostess blew the surprise in front of my daughter which was dreadful. I had planned a long time for this surprise. It was awful. She will never forget it.
The waitress was alone to serve the entire 2nd floor, therefore, she was slow in responding to request and we stayed an additional 45 minutes just for the checkout. She joined all the checks together without ever asking if they should be separate. When she returned with the check she piled them in the middle of the table for the guest to figure them out.
Very, very poor communication among the staff led to a disastrous customer service experience.
However, the food was delicious.
Nicole the bartender was great. The service was great. The live music was s great touch
We had brunch and it was delicious. We had an amazing time and our waiter Maurice was Awesome!!! I’ll be back!!!!
This is our favorite brunch place in Old Town. Chicken and waffles all day!
We loved the Brunch this Sunday. Courtnee was a WONDERFUL waitress!!!! We will definitely come again.
Great Sunday brunch - good service , great bloody marys, good food- what's not to like?
One small critique- omelet station is badly placed, and blocks passage of those people not wanting an omelet or carving station. Please give the poor omelet maker some help during peak times !
Great place with delicious food! The staff was amazing and the vibe is very chill ☺️
The food was great, the people were friendly! Great place to eat!
Good food, terrible service. And the restaurant was filthy, food/crumbs all over the floor, stairs, chairs...
This was my second time coming here for brunch and my friends and I were not impressed with the brunch buffet. I chose to get a plate instead. The food was sub-par, and I would not come back for the food, but the drinks were GREAT. Try any variety of their Bloody Mary, you won’t be disappointed!
Excellent food! Excellent service!
A group of 32 nine year olds walked in 10 minutes after our reservation and took up most of the top floor. We requested to move to the bottom floor (had reserved a table for 4 and indicated it was a date) because of the noise. Service dropped a bit downstairs as they sort of forgot about us at first. Drinks were great, food was pretty good.
Went for Sunday brunch. The service was horrible. Only got one refill on my drink, my cup was empty most of the visit. The Buffett ran out of food constantly. Some items like fresh fruit totally ran out. The staff was bickering in front of customers. I see no reason to ever return. Too many other options to eat near by.
I have never given a bad review before but the service was one of the worst I have ever had and it was a brunch buffet!! Our server just had to do was bring us drinks, clear plates and bring our check and all of those things took forever. We had to ask at least 3 times just for water and finally got it half way through our meal. We never got refills of water or other drinks we ordered. We could see her standing around talking to coworkers so it wasn’t that she was busy. We were baffled. It turned out the service was just as bad for the table next to us and they were just as frustrated. It’s really too bad because the food was pretty good but I can’t go back with that kind of service. It ruined the experience.
The Hen Quarter moved locations And although we were sad they are no longer in downtown DC we went to Alexandria specifically for them. Love the food, drinks and everything else!
We went for the brunch buffet. Food was good, but was a little slow being refilled. A little on the pricey side.
They were very understaffed so it took 5 minutes before the hostess seated
Drinks, apps, and food all came at once. Food was dried out fried chicken.
Maybe for lunch; I thought dinner was good, but pricey.
The food is pricey but delicious. The restaurant decor and feel is warm and inviting. The staff, with the exception of Jorge and Carlos (who is in training as a new hire as of 4/14/19) is subpar and not on the same level as the food and look of the restaurant.
Hen Quarter in Old Town is like the owner came, built an awesome restaurant with a thought-out menu and look, and then left the restaurant to a manager(s) who is not present and does not care. The staff is unprofessional, immature, and do not want to be there. Our server/bartender who was in charge of training Carlos made sure to tell everyone left in the restaurant each time it was 15 minutes closer to closing time and loudly proclaimed to a clocked out staff member that it was her last day. This is not the only example I have of poor service there.
I stomach the poor service because I love the food. I do not go as often as I would because of that poor service. It is clear the staff has a hiring manager who also does not care or we would have seen changes over the last 2 years.
Train your staff and don’t hire the first person who applies or walks in off the street for a job. Customers paying $30/person for chicken don’t want that low-level service experience.
Excellent brunch, would definitely recommend although it is a little noisy
The best things about this meal were the cocktails, hush puppies and biscuits. The service was below average for that price of food .busboys nosily cleared the table next to us (practically throwing chairs out of the way). And the place was half empty. (But 8pm on a Friday night). We waited forever to get a glass of water and drinks... the fries that I ordered as a replacement side came out way ahead of the rest of my food. And the food was just average. I ordered the special fried chicken and there was nothing special about it. Oh and the glass was nowhere near a “full” pour for the cocktails. I wouldn’t go back - iy was okay but I’d rather spend my money somewhere that wants me as a customer and doesn’t premake the food.
Great food! My wife and I cannot wait to go back!!
