Hellenic Republic Kew Ratings and Reviews
Having had an enjoyable gluten free meal at Hellenic Republic once before, we were looking forward to another special night to celebrate a birthday. On this visit the service was poor with inexperienced staff working the floor with little knowledge of what constituted a gluten free meal. First course arrived with no change to the offerings as requested. The dessert order was forgotten about and took two attempts to get right. If you’re a coealiac it’s proably not worth the risk dining at HR due to vigilance required to ensure your meal is gluten free.
I think the food here is over rated. We all took the banquet, and the assortment of flavours was ordinary. In particular, the lamb was a little muttony, although cooked tenderly. Everything else was moderate in quantity, and short on notable flavour. The service was good, if rushed. The noise of Friday night dining was limiting to conversation. Wouldn't go there again. Better value, and more intense experience at the kebab takeaways on Smith Street.
The food is usually very nice here. I usually go at least twice a year. However the Lamb Shoulder was a great disappointment this year. I had to carve into it and it was fatty when it usually just falls off the bone. when I mentioned it politely to the waiter they didn't seem to care and if I didn't have a client with me I would have said more. Basically it was horrible.
Food was boring and disappointing! Menu was smaller and some of our favourites weren't there. We shared the banquet and were all disappointed compared to the last time we'd come. We missed a) the roast chicken and b) vegetables (sorry, but feta + capsicum isn't really a vegetable). The dessert was a particular disappointment. We've planned our next girls' night...but not here.
Beautiful food. Loved the idea of being able to purchase a 'half' main serve....especially when i was having trouble deciding between two. The staff were lovely and the seating was set out well. The only downside was it was way too loud. We couldnt hear what the waitress was saying and struggled to have a conversation without yelling. Overall though, a very nice evening.
Good food, friendly staffs, a bit noisy though due to a big group with special occasion sit close to us. For the kids menu, may be can have more pita bread, 2 small slices portion a bit too small serves with the chicken ( just my son’s suggestion) he loves the menu, especially the tzatziki dip! Yum)
I found the restaurant to be more like a family friendly walk in restaurant, far removed from a fine dining experience. It was a shock to see adults eating inside wearing shorts , t-shirts and sneakers, not what I expected at all. Also the noise level makes conversation between two almost impossible.
A first visit to this restaurant which started off quiet at 6pm on a week night and was quite noisy by 8 pm. We really enjoyed the food and the sharing style of eating. However a few negatives have to be mentioned. My cutlery had to be pinched from another table. Further, no extra cutlery is provided to share out the dishes. And finally we experienced a long, long wait between starters and the mains. So much so that we were given a bowl of olives to keep us going. We were told that the moussaka took a long time but I really don't believe that.
We went there for a low key celebration for my daughter’s birthday. The food was very good - the lamb was so tender & flavoursome. The only drawback was the noise level. We had two elderly ladies in our group & the music was a touch too loud to have enjoyable conversations. The loud music coupled with lots of hard surfaces made the acoustic ambience problematic. Otherwise it was good.
We enjoyed our dinner, our first date was a Greek meal and I'm please to say our 16th wedding anniversary was celerbrated the same way... great twist on favoriate Greek dishes.
It would be great if there was a bath room on the ground floor as this would make it easier to bring our ageing parents that could not do stairs.
Hellenic Republic is well known now thanks to the celebrity status of it's owner, but tonight it didn't dissapoint.
Not only was the food delicious (and I personally strongly recommend the grain salad) but the service was outstanding, with the staff being knowledgeable and helpful, and able to cater for the difficult dietary requirements of one of our dinner guests. Not only did they understand her specific requirements (fructose malabsorbtion, requiring meals low of garlic/onion and gluten, amongst other things) but they were able to provide her with an alternate set banquet to go along with ours, that was just as delicious as the rest of the menu.
A+ effort to the staff at Hellenic Republic, and a big thankyou from her, who rarely gets to enjoy high class restaurant meals. You really outdid yourselves.
