Hellenic Republic Brunswick
Great upgrades! Love the new uniform and the new menu especially the delicious cocktails- What a great addition! Chryssa was an amazing host. She went out of her way to make sure we enjoyed ourselves. Our waitress was also very attentive, friendly and efficient. As always food was yummy!
Dined there on Saturday night, we dressed for a cool night but it was uncomfortably hot (and stuffy) inside the restaurant. Food was outstanding, I felt it could be catered for children a little bit better. Our eight year old only ate a bowl of chips
The food was amazing as always. The music was just a bit too loud which made conversation across the table a little difficult. Service staff were very accommodating and friendly, but probably returned a bit too frequently to the table refilling water, the gesture was nice but interrupted table conversation too regularly, would be happy with just the occasional check in between courses.
Overall amazing, delicious food keeps me coming back, the price is the only thing that stops me coming back every week, but rather saving it for special occasions.
Food and service was excellent 10/10 but was extremely noisy. Could not hear friends talking on our table of 6. But I would still recommend due to beautiful food
The food quality has changed dramatically since our last visit. When we enquired as to the reasoning behind this we were told that each restaurant was catering to the surrounding area and the Brunswick venue was catering to a more vegan based clientele. Since vegans don’t eat meat I still don’t understand the necessity of changing the meat. We always came for an authentic Greek dining experience where we shared food cooked in a traditional way. The lemon soaked chicken and lamb were always the highlight of our experience and often we would order second helpings. The overly salted meat with a lemon drizzle only left us thirsty and no one wanted to finish off first helpings let alone come back for seconds. It is disappointing as we make a great effort, and travel over an hour and a half to go to this restaurant. We have always raved about our experience to friends but those times seem to be over. It’s a real shame.
Food was delicious, service prompt and attentive. I will be back for sure.
Loved the staff who gave an exceptional service. And the vegan banquet menu was fantastic!
Friendly staff, prompt service & great food. We chose the cheapest of the set menus to sample a variety of dishes. Not only did it not disappoint us but it was more than enough food.
Overall the meal was reasonable however considered over priced relative to the calibre of what was being served. (The bill was well in excess of $200 for dinner for 2 people)
The meals were Pleasant enough however not of considerable standing one would expect from a place of noteworthy like Hellenic Republic. I believe the brand has been diluted. (Felt like a slightly more upmarket version of Jimmy Grants)
- The shoulder of lamb was somewhat overcooked.
- the prawns were also over cooked.
- The chairs were uncomfortable
-And I personally find it offensive that they would attempt to charge a 1-2% credit card surcharge on a Bill for a meal that was over $200.
Exceptional experience throughout, I dine here every time I visit Melbourne and will most definitely return
Really tasty food and lovely, hospitable staff. We had a perfect dining experience!
The food and service were great. However if restaurants are going to book more than one sitting per evening they should be prepared to stay open later than 10 pm.
We had a 7.45 pm booking. The lights were dimmed down just before 10 pm. Now, we would have probably left by 10.30 but we felt rushed and pushed out.
As a customer wanting to dine at a restaurant that has two sittings, I have to agree to dine later than I would ordinarily like to. I also agree to pay the 15% surcharge on a public holiday. Therefore, I feel the least the restaurant could do is allow me to enjoy my evening and not make me feel as I'm overstaying.
Think about your patrons Hellenic Republic
Whilst the food was satisfactory it was appalling to incur a 15 percent surcharge for dining on Easter Sunday considering the public holiday is on the Monday, but more particularly as penalty rates for staff wages have been abolished - I assume the extra $50 fee I copped therefore didn't go to additional staff wages but instead went directly to the owners of the restaurant.
Food was great, service excellent and prices very good.
Second time back and it was superb. Booked 2 tables - one for the adults and the other for the kids. We all enjoyed the food thoroughly. Service was great too! We will be back again.
The prawns with chilli butter and the chicken were very good the remaining dishes were not good, salad felt like it had been dressed the day before and seasoning lacking
The manner in which my booking was handled from end to end was very impressive and provided me with a sense of comfort that my booking was in the system. On arrival we were seated quickly with menu's presented quickly. We sat facing the kitchen area, while I appreciate there are some space constraints sitting infront of the kitchen is not ideal. The restaurant was very noisy and difficult to have a conversation with guests. The staff were very accommodating and helpful.
The food is amazing, this is the key reason for coming back.
On a Saturday night it was so noisy that overall the experience was average. The food was amazing, the servings small, the value just ok.
My wife and I are big fans of George Colombaris and we were very excited about visiting Hellenic Republic and had high expectations. Well, our expectations weren't high enough! The food was everything good about Greek food but elevated. Seriously, I had the lamb shoulder and I don't know how you make it that tender and tasty. Every course was superb and my only regret is that my stomach has limits and we couldn't have everything. Apart from the food the staff were very professional, knowledgeable and like in all of Melbourne very friendly. If you love good food and don't mind paying a little more than most the Hellenic Republic is magical.
I think they've changed the menu - I remember the portions being much more generous and flavoursome. Still a bit pushy when it comes to ordering food - but really friendly staff. I think the restaurant is risking becoming a bit of a chain store - needs a resident chief who loves the place and connects with customers.
Amazing venue for a lovely long lunch/dinner. Delicious food, very generous! Make sure you get the saganaki and lamb!
A bit noisy, but that comes with the venues popularity! Thanks for a lovely meal!
Over priced. No cheaper wine options. Wine over priced for the quality you get. Music too loud and loud music in toilet. Won't be back
Best chicken ever, nice ambience and very friendly staff
Highly recommend!! Great service, amazing food. The lamb is to die for!
Great night! Magnificent food and plenty of it. The slow cooked lamb shoulder was to die for and so was the ice cream baklava. Great service too.
The service was excellent. There was flexibility with meal preparation based on food allergies which is always very helpful.
Food, wine and cocktails were fantastic and myself and my friends had a really enjoyable night in a modern venue.
Our waiter was dismissive and rude. His appearence was questionable his nose ring and facial hear left a lot to the imagination in such an industry.
It also bothers me that a Greek restaurant had not a Greek in sight. Will not be coming back any time soon, and will warn friends about service levels.
Great food and friendly staff. Reasonably priced. George's Cypriot grain salad is outstanding.
food really excellent, wines could be better. service at the beginning a little bit stressed, very loud due to horrible acustic, but anyway when beeing in melbounre and looking for best greek food, this is the place to go to!
Had the vegan banquet which on paper looked very good but in reality, most of the dishes lacked flavour. I feel that the fennel and artichoke could've been cooked longer. They were both too crunchy/raw for my liking but YMMV. Overall it felt as though the menu was created by someone who understands food but it not a vegan so it just wasn't quite there. I wouldn't return for the same menu.
Amazing food! Great environment!
I love open kitchens and watching the chef's work their magic.
However, the tables and chairs were tiny (only downside).
Brilliant. The $75 banquet was amazing and even catered for a vegetarian in our group.
Food was amazing and a perfect night for overseas clients
I appreciated the create approach to vegan cuisine, I was impressed by the chef’s ability to maintain the Greek influence whilst delivering a high quality plant based menu. Wine pairings were excellent, service was great and it was one of the best evenings!
The experience was very ordinary when we were expecting something special. First impression - not very comfortable chairs and being an empty restaurant basically there was no need to place us right on the till. We have been to the Press Club and whilst we knew it would be different - it was actually as far away from that experience as possible. Apparently the olives were good - I didn't have any. The whitebait was ok, quite salty though, aiole was nice. The fig and Saganaki was the best thing we had all night apart from the Moet! Mains were Moussaka which was good but the squid was tough, somehow they managed to make it very tough on the outside whilst being translucent in the middle - forgettable to say the least. Now to the service - twice we asked for the main to not follow the entrees immediately, the waiter said to let him know when we were ready - the mains arrived when the entree had not even been cleared away, when we complained we weren't actually ready the waitress didn't actually seem to care at all. After that we were basically ignored for well on 30 minutes despite wanting to order more wine. So after all of that we would not recommend wasting time and money at this restaurant.
The Hellenic Republic Restaurant was everything we hoped for. We are avid fans of Masterchef from South Africa and wanted to check out something authentic in Melbourne which had to do with Masterchef. The food was fabulous. The lamb shoulder slow cooked for 12 hours absolutely melted in the mouth. The Baklava was amazing. Thank you for such a wonderful evening. Our waitress made the visit for us with her friendly and efficient service. It couldn’t have been better!!!
I’ve been to this place about 10 times since it opened and I’ve got to say I’m not sure I’ll be back.
Whilst the staff are really fantastic in terms of their food knowledge, being attentive and highly accommodating to people’s dietary requirements, as well as their want of a great experience for everyone - the food was inconsistent and ultimately that is what my friends and I go there for.
Out of the 10 or so times I’ve been over the years, we have only left raving about the food about 60 percent of the time.
It seems it was a far more exciting and satisfying feed experience in the early days of the restaurant.
This weekend some of the seasonal additions to the menu were executed perfectly, but their tried and tested signature dishes they are known for - the menu regulars, fell below the hopes we had for this dining experience.
So it is with regret that my days visiting Hellenic Republic with gastronomic feasts in mind have likely passed.
After years of dining at Hellenic Republic and other restaurants like Gazi for all kinds of occasions, unfortunately this will be my last. My friend felt the same and my partner who had never been before was disappointed after telling him for so long how amazing it was - one of my favourites!
The venues itself was so loud I didn’t hear a single thing the waitress said the whole night. My partner took two “noise breaks” during dinner, strange I know and I’ve never known him or anyone to do that before!
We all did the $75 banquet. I usually do this, and we expected the amazing taramasalta, the famous grain salad, chicken and lamb off the spit, the potatoes and rice pudding or donuts as in the past but instead what we got was by far a huge let down.
First there was what I assume was hummus. No one comes for hummus. That’s what I’m eating during the week from Coles with carrot sticks when I’m on a diet saving my calories for a dinner at a place like Hellenic Republic. The Saginaki was great but the arancini, which is not Greek as far as I’m concerned and the cheese pies left a lot to be desired. Following that was the sword fish, that’s been in the banquet for as long as I can remember and always good but 1 prawn each! And Tuna cheviche? That’s not Greek!
But the biggest let down was the coleslaw - come on! I can make a coleslaw for 20 cents a serve at home, no grain salad. There was also no potato’s, no chicken. No Taramasalta and.... the baclava which was in a wedge which was impossible to divide between the table, please - We don’t want to share an awkward desert!
Visited from Newcastle; must do attraction if you appreciate fabulous food and atmosphere!
Fabulous food and great service. Wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
approached us to remove food so many times when we where still eating at a slow pace.
Still an enjoyable night ..
And we love coming back.
