I have been before and it was not as good as i remember, but I do know the menu changes all the time which is what I like about it. Food took too long to come out between courses in my opinion
We had a fantastic family Sunday lunch and enjoyed the FeedMe menu which was adapted to our favourite of the options. Also enjoyed a great glass of wine and cocktails. My favourite type of attentive yet informal service
-The food did not equate to the price . While the food all tasted good it was not a memorable meal, we have definitely eaten much better food for that price, the food wasn’t very adventurous.
-The restersunt itself lacks coziness, no soft furnishings , no candles or dimmed lights. The room at the side where we sat was just very plain and a bit cold too.
-Overall it was a good meal and we ate the food happily but we wouldn’t return or recommend it as there are far better for value.
Great date night venue, lots of people with a cosy but vibrant ambiance. Delicious food, well portioned. An excellent selection of booze to go along with it.
The food was absolutely incredible. The venue is lovey and very suitable for dates (we went for Valentines) or small groups. Service was impeccible. Highly recommended.
Awesome food and service. Will definitely be back!
Genuinely outstanding restaurant. Beautiful French inspired cuisine, generally attentive and friendly service. We will be back.
Friends visiting Melbourne We had the feed me menu and loved everything including the wine and mock tail
Definitely will come back
We did the ‘feed me’ menu on New Year’s Eve. Some of the dishes were great but all up what we were served felt a bit disjointed and mismatched.
The staff were all lovely but there were definite hiccups (my husband waiting over 45 minutes for a drink that we asked for 3 times). It wasn’t for a lack of trying, but I definitely got the impression they were under staffed.
All up it was ok but we wouldn’t recommend to others and we wouldn’t go back.
Lovely food, welll worth it, would go again, chefs menu is great
Great food and service in a casual, ambient setting.
The service was fantastic, food great and wine list and cocktails superb. Would highly recommend Hell of the North for anything.
Stunning food and service! The best pate I have tasted. Knowledgeable and informative staff.
Went to try the feed me menu. The food was delicious and fresh, the service was prompt and the staff were very friendly. Left the restaurant happy and filled!
Fabulous evening. They fed us superbly, took care of us with charm and made it easy for us soak it up and enjoy. Thanks.
First time here-brought and overseas guest who lives in France and he loved the wine list. The food was excellent -servings maybe slightly small but still lovely. Vegetarians are catered for just not in the starters which are quite fishy and meaty. Desserts were amazing especially the creme brûlée.
Waiter (Alex) decided arguing with us about what wine we had asked for was a good idea.
Automatically adding charity donations is NOT acceptable. If you want to support a charity, YOU give to the charity.
Charging 1.5% for credit cards is NOT ok, and bordering on illegal.
Sitting two people at the end of a bench where they physically cannot fir all four legs is NOT acceptable, particularly when the table had been booked well in advance.
We absolutely loved dinner at Hell of the North. I feel that the website made it come across like it might be a bit stuff but it wasn’t at all; it had a great vibe, great food, the staff were fantastic and the fact that you can BYO is just great. Will definitely go back.
We made a reservation at 8.45pm on Saturday 24th. We got to the restaurant at 8.30pm and we were told to sit outside as they were busy. We sat out for an hour in the cold. We were then told to come in and sit on a high table (8 seater) with other customers already seated on the same table. We were already so over it. Decided to have the creme brule and couple of mocktails. Creme brule was served within 20 minutes and the the drinks took another hour. Overall not a great experience.
Main dishes were ordinary and lack of attention to detail/ flexibility in service
Food is very good, well executed and presented, but the wine menu pricing doesn't fit the overall price, look and feel of the restaurant.
Never disappoints. Food, service and ambiance always spot on.
We now been about 4 times and always have a great time. The food is fresh and beautifully cooked and presented. We've already recommended to a lot of people. Staff are outstanding - friendly, helpful! The only thing I missed was a wine chiller for our bottle of wine.
We had a fantastic dinner at Hell of the North. Service was excellent and the waiter was very helpful. The food was delicious - would recommend the beef tartare!
We have been to Hell of the North as a couple and loved the tasting menu. Unfortunately as a group our experience wasn’t of the same level. The portions didn’t match the no. Of guests (eg 4 slices of the steak for 6 guests) . Better value and experience as a small group.
Last minute booking for a 6.15 sitting and found the staff very good and the food lovely. We chose the $75 menu where our courses were chosen for us and it was very tasty. To improve on this experience we felt that the mussels were a little disappointing due the amount you received and were very salty. Also disappointing was that there weren't any heavy full bodied shiraz's on their wine list. Otherwise fantastic and a great place to eat.
I've dined quite a lot at Hell of the North and every time I go it exceeds expectations. The food is exquisite and so is the wine list. Make sure you check it out!
Took my parents and my girlfriends mother out to dinner to here and we had such a beautiful experience. The waiting staff were friendly and polite, food was delicious, even the owner gave a perfect selection of wine to compliment my meal. Highly recommend Hell of the North to anyone who is looking to enjoy good food, wine and an all round dining experience.
Solid venue, nothing particularly unique but all around solid food.
Service was disjointed and it clearly seemed like they were under staffed. Maybe they were having a really hard day. Certainly showed and we left not really understanding what this restaurant was about. Food itself was regular fare for the Collingwood/Fitzroy area.
Lovely ambiance/environment, quality authentic French cuisine, and friendly professional staff.
This place was highly recommended by several friends, so we booked in for our 10th Anniversary. Super happy we did, as the food was absolutely divine - and VERY good value, the 'Feed Me' tasting menu. Stellar service, and great ambiance. Can't wait to return!
I’m a bit challenged by HOTN. The drinks and food are very good. But 4 of us were in and out in an hour on a Saturday night. That’s a cocktail, 2 courses and wine all delivered in less than an hour. No complaints with the food, it is great. But it just felt very, very well rushed. I had a great lunch here a while back and we all agreed that we think this is a better lunch than dinner venue. Shame really.
Just expertly first meal here and was very pleased indeed. Great interior space, timeyand very good service and fabulous food. I’ll be back and have no hesitation in recommending.
Excellent food, service and wine. The wine in particular was amazing value. Service was universally good, with anticipation of needs before we had to ask. Highly recommended. We'll be back.
Great restaurant; food was delicious ; services was excellent.
The food is good quality but the portion size is surprisingly small. The ambiance is warm and comfortable. The server was kind but too often unavailable even though it was not crowded. So many extraordinary restaurants in Fitzroy; unfortunately, this was not one of them.
Excellent food, lovely restaurant, the Feed Me menu is good value and good service. I'll be back.
Amazing food. Average service. It was a really lovely atmosphere but I think they needed 1 more staff member on. Everything felt fairly rushed and our drinks were pretty much thrown at us. They were really lovely though.
That said, food was outstanding and I’ll definitely be back and recommend to everyone.
I've now lost count how many time I've been to Hell of the North over the years. As usual the food was outstanding, and the wine list was superb - especially when I mentioned an '05 Chardonnay that I had recently that was amazing - and it just so happened HotN had one bottle of it in the cellar!
I recommend Hell of the North to anyone that will listen - it's a must visit.
