The food is good quality but the portion size is surprisingly small. The ambiance is warm and comfortable. The server was kind but too often unavailable even though it was not crowded. So many extraordinary restaurants in Fitzroy; unfortunately, this was not one of them.

Amazing food. Average service. It was a really lovely atmosphere but I think they needed 1 more staff member on. Everything felt fairly rushed and our drinks were pretty much thrown at us. They were really lovely though.
That said, food was outstanding and I’ll definitely be back and recommend to everyone.

I've now lost count how many time I've been to Hell of the North over the years. As usual the food was outstanding, and the wine list was superb - especially when I mentioned an '05 Chardonnay that I had recently that was amazing - and it just so happened HotN had one bottle of it in the cellar!

I recommend Hell of the North to anyone that will listen - it's a must visit.

Sparkling water should be free these days shouldn't it? A few of our dishes were really delicious (the oyster blade and the kingfish) but the french classics like the french onion soup and the beef tartare were disappointing. The creme brulee was a real highlight, very delicious generous serves.

The place was understaffed and they were obviously under the pump. Management were stressed and questioned our food and beverage choices when we asked to order after waiting for a long while. We went for our 1 year anniversary and sadly we had an awful time and left feeling unsatified. Wouldn’t recommend to friends or family. :(

Having been to Hell of the North on a prior occasion, I wasn't surprised by the great cocktails, excellent service and ambience. Shared dishes, the entrees were superb, the mains mostly terrific but the desserts while lovely were not show stoppers. The lemon meringue pie needed cream not sorbet to dilute it's tartness and it felt store brought - which I'm sure it wasn't. Overall - a great menu and a very good dining experience.

We had an exquisite dining experience at Hell of the North. The restaurant was divided into several rooms so we only saw the front room but it was a very pleasant space. We chose the a la carte menu (gnocchi and kingfish) which were both delicious. Accompanied by a beautiful Loire Valley Chenin Blanc. The chocolate, ginger and roast almond ice-cream was also outstanding. Efficient, friendly service. Unobtrusive, moderate music levels. Totally recommended.

This was our first time here and we were warmly welcomed by knowledgeable and friendly staff. The food was great and we had the Feed Me Light Lunch - which was plenty of food as all the dishes are designed to share. They catered brilliantly for vegetarian and pescatarian friends and we also had options to add cheese instead of a sweet course. The wine list is solid with representation from all over the world - beware though as it is not cheap.

Having said that - we would definitely go back and I have already talked it up to my friends. You won't be disappointed (and it is really close to the tram if you have really enjoyed the wine!).

We ordered a variety of dishes to share and loved all of them. A minor thing was that it would have been good to get bread with the muscles to soak up that fabulous sauce! The service was excellent- helpful and personable. It was a little noisy due to a large full table nearby, but the atmospheric set up meant it did not impinge too much. Overall we had a fabulous evening and would certainly dine here again.

I don’t get why this place receives such high reviews. Cramped dining, noisy, average service from disinterested staff and food that is just ok - nothing groundbreaking, pretty boring but mostly well cooked. For $75 p/h there’s much better options in Melbourne.

We loved dining at Hell of the North. Its off-the-beaten-path location adds an element of secrecy to the dining experience, which matched the soft, warm lighting and quiet atmosphere. All up, I would recommend it for any special occasion, for the oenophiles and gastronomes, and for anybody interested in treating their palate to unique flavours in both food and drink.

In my reservation, I mentioned that the booking was for a birthday, which was attended to by a birthday candle in our Crème Brûlée, which was a nice touch!

Hell of the North was exceptional for our date lunch on Saturday. The atmosphere was perfect, service was truly brilliant and the food was some of the best I've eaten. We loved our lunch and we'll definitely be back. I would recommend this as an excellent date, special occasion or fine dining restaurant.

This was our second visit to Hell of The North and we will definitely go again. On the first occasion we had the Feed Me option, which is great, and this time we ordered a la carte. The atmosphere is buzzing, the food is great and the service was very good. Another great option for dining out in Melbourne.

This restaurant was fantastic. We had a two hour dining window, and although the food came out promptly we never felt rushed. Highlights were the steak tartare, the cured trout, the potato chips were up with the best, amazing chicken. Drink selection has been done really well and priced reasonably. Yes it's busy but well staffed and authentic.

Excellent high quality food and drink offerings. The waiter was helpful in advising our food choice selection and we were really satisfied with everything we ordered - the cheese soufflé is a must have!! Great cocktail selection and the wine menu was broad.
We sat in the back next to the kitchen and didn't have an issue with temperature or noise (like some reviews I have read).

A fun spot for dinner. We had the deed me menu. Not sure if the value was there & if we would have saved if we had ordered the same items a la carte. We were not informed that we needed to vacate the table for another party until 10 minutes before, which made the end of the evening quite rushed. Wine list was great & the service fantastic!

I've easily been to Hell of the North over 15 times now over the years, and I can easily say it's one of my favourite restaurants in Melbourne - which is a huge call!

When you get here and you want to make it a special night make sure you ask for the cellar door wine list - the wines are bottles you just won't easily find and are absolutely outstanding. Well worth making a visit here - I may go again this weekend!

Food was excellent, but service left a sour taste. We were served by 2 people: A bearded dude who seemed like he didn't care about serving us and a really nice girl that was super helpful.

We encountered the bearded dude first — he dumped the menus and ran, didn't even bother to take our drink order. We waited for over 20 mins (seated at 8:50pm) then finally the nice girl served us until the end of her shift at which time we had to go back to the bearded dude. At no time did he ask how things went which is a shame because I wanted to let the kitchen know the creme brûlée tasted burnt (which was the only minor complaint I had about the food).

The thing was though the bearded dude was being super helpful to the table next to us, so who knows, maybe he was just tip fishing for people who "look" like they have fat wallets.
