Delicious and lovely atmosphere! Great for a romantic night out!
We had a fantastic night that flew by in a flash. We were welcomed warmly from the moment we stepped through the door and thoroughly enjoyed exploring the menu through the three course 'feed me' option. Everything we had was inventive and delicious. Drink recommendations were spot on. We'll be back.
I’ve been a dozen times now and never had anything less than a fantastic experience. It’s just so consistently good. Every mouthful is a joy. The passion of their chefs is always there to appreciate in the perfectly presented food. Love this restaurant!
great selection on wines. Food was good too. We didn't have any starters so I would love to try next time
Food was delicious! We chose the ‘feed me’ $60 option & it was the perfect amount...& we were pretty hungry! Staff were very attentive & the ambiance was lovely. Would rec
Just loved walking in thru the big yellow door to a small venue filled with ambience. Food was delicious and the staff were attentive to our requests.
The creme caramel desert is worth the trip in itself
We really enjoyed our "Date night"at Hell of the North. I booked on line, unfortunately couldn't get a table, only high tables or sitting at the bar was available we took the high table.
I was surprised to get a call confirming the reservation and if there were any dietary requirements- which there were.
They were able to cater for my "no diary"😊
Food was delicious I had the duck my partner the meat along with dishes of salads and vegetables
Highly recommended it.. book early though if you prefer table seating
Definitely be back
Poor service, felt left alone in the corner. Got the $75 feed me, was difficult to share. Quite disappointing
There's a quiet elegance to Hell of the North, an ironically-named establishment tucked in among Fitzroy's Victorian terraces which is erring to the side of caution as they traverse the line between 'fine dining' and 'high end bistro'. The place on a Sunday afternoon lunch is a quiet way to while away your weekend; the menu is rotated by the season and at this time was tailored for Autumn. A 'feed me' option was available, which we skipped in favour of the menu items. Small chicken liver pate corns were smooth, beautiful things. A seared slice of ox tongue also was gloriously tender. Main courses of lamb and pork were magnificently prepared and were the quintessence of succulence. The crème brulee desert option was among the best I've had. Our host, Mark, was engaging and funny - he knew his wines and was only too keen to elaborate on the menu items and provide back story. His is a wonderful place to eat. Highly recommended.
Outstanding service & food! Mains were a little small but entrees & desserts were quite large! 10/10 experience overall, would recommend to anybody looking for good quality French food!!
Wonderful wonderful wonderful
Wonderful evening! Don’t look any further, this is the place to go for a delicious meal. Mussels marinieres were so tasty and haven’t had a creme brûlée like that outside of Paris.
Our guests all thoroughly enjoyed the experience of dining here. The food was so good - the best creme brûlée I have ever tasted! Staff were friendly and helpful. The ambience was quiet and cosy - despite our group excitedly celebrating two birthdays and a homecoming. I was so pleased to find Hell of the North and will definitely bring friends here again. I thoroughly recommend it to others young and old!
Wonderful food, staff presenting food with a smile, and a fantastic dimly lit setting of blue stone walls and old liquor bottles.
I have been before and it was not as good as i remember, but I do know the menu changes all the time which is what I like about it. Food took too long to come out between courses in my opinion
We had a fantastic family Sunday lunch and enjoyed the FeedMe menu which was adapted to our favourite of the options. Also enjoyed a great glass of wine and cocktails. My favourite type of attentive yet informal service
-The food did not equate to the price . While the food all tasted good it was not a memorable meal, we have definitely eaten much better food for that price, the food wasn’t very adventurous.
-The restersunt itself lacks coziness, no soft furnishings , no candles or dimmed lights. The room at the side where we sat was just very plain and a bit cold too.
-Overall it was a good meal and we ate the food happily but we wouldn’t return or recommend it as there are far better for value.
Great date night venue, lots of people with a cosy but vibrant ambiance. Delicious food, well portioned. An excellent selection of booze to go along with it.
The food was absolutely incredible. The venue is lovey and very suitable for dates (we went for Valentines) or small groups. Service was impeccible. Highly recommended.
Awesome food and service. Will definitely be back!
Genuinely outstanding restaurant. Beautiful French inspired cuisine, generally attentive and friendly service. We will be back.
Friends visiting Melbourne We had the feed me menu and loved everything including the wine and mock tail
Definitely will come back
We did the ‘feed me’ menu on New Year’s Eve. Some of the dishes were great but all up what we were served felt a bit disjointed and mismatched.
The staff were all lovely but there were definite hiccups (my husband waiting over 45 minutes for a drink that we asked for 3 times). It wasn’t for a lack of trying, but I definitely got the impression they were under staffed.
All up it was ok but we wouldn’t recommend to others and we wouldn’t go back.
Lovely food, welll worth it, would go again, chefs menu is great
Great food and service in a casual, ambient setting.
The service was fantastic, food great and wine list and cocktails superb. Would highly recommend Hell of the North for anything.
Stunning food and service! The best pate I have tasted. Knowledgeable and informative staff.
Went to try the feed me menu. The food was delicious and fresh, the service was prompt and the staff were very friendly. Left the restaurant happy and filled!
Fabulous evening. They fed us superbly, took care of us with charm and made it easy for us soak it up and enjoy. Thanks.
First time here-brought and overseas guest who lives in France and he loved the wine list. The food was excellent -servings maybe slightly small but still lovely. Vegetarians are catered for just not in the starters which are quite fishy and meaty. Desserts were amazing especially the creme brûlée.
Waiter (Alex) decided arguing with us about what wine we had asked for was a good idea.

We absolutely loved dinner at Hell of the North. I feel that the website made it come across like it might be a bit stuff but it wasn’t at all; it had a great vibe, great food, the staff were fantastic and the fact that you can BYO is just great. Will definitely go back.
We made a reservation at 8.45pm on Saturday 24th. We got to the restaurant at 8.30pm and we were told to sit outside as they were busy. We sat out for an hour in the cold. We were then told to come in and sit on a high table (8 seater) with other customers already seated on the same table. We were already so over it. Decided to have the creme brule and couple of mocktails. Creme brule was served within 20 minutes and the the drinks took another hour. Overall not a great experience.
Food is very good, well executed and presented, but the wine menu pricing doesn't fit the overall price, look and feel of the restaurant.
Main dishes were ordinary and lack of attention to detail/ flexibility in service
Never disappoints. Food, service and ambiance always spot on.
We now been about 4 times and always have a great time. The food is fresh and beautifully cooked and presented. We've already recommended to a lot of people. Staff are outstanding - friendly, helpful! The only thing I missed was a wine chiller for our bottle of wine.
We had a fantastic dinner at Hell of the North. Service was excellent and the waiter was very helpful. The food was delicious - would recommend the beef tartare!
We have been to Hell of the North as a couple and loved the tasting menu. Unfortunately as a group our experience wasn’t of the same level. The portions didn’t match the no. Of guests (eg 4 slices of the steak for 6 guests) . Better value and experience as a small group.
