Hell of the North
Great little restaurant with amazing staff and brilliant French food.
Well worth a visit.
If you want something a bit fancy without a huge price tag this is your place. I thought the food was fantastic value for money but the wine list can hit you hard in the pocket. Everyone was friendly, food was excellent although I thought it was a bit cold when I arrived but soon warmed up. Good for date night with your beloved.
Such an amazing restaurant. We absolutely love coming here. Highly recommend! Food is delicious and staff are fantastic
We were unfortunately a little disappointed after hearing such good reviews. We had the 5 course Feed Me Menu which is good value at $70 but the food was served on cold plates and as we were sitting near the door, the meals became cold very quickly. The flank steak was quite chewy and not tender as expected. Maybe we were just unlucky. Service was great so will give it another go in 6-12mths.
This was the third time I've been to Hell of the north. I was a little disappointed to be honest. The food was not as good as the previous visits. The meat was chewy and sinewy rather than the normal melt in your mouth. We were also rushed through our dessert so they could bring in the next sitting which was disappointing.
Food was amazing the service was exquisite. Great value for the price.
My partner and i eat out a great deal, and the service we got from Hell was stand out! I didn't get anyone's name, but particularly a gentleman and a woman with shortish dark hair, were both amazing! It was a birthday dinner and we had a wonderful time! Service was the best, food was great, cocktails were delightful and it was a perfect romantic night for us. Thankyou!
We held a team dinner in the private dining room and the experience was exceptional. Everyone loved the food, the staff are sunny and friendly, and Mark was wonderful in managing the back and forth on our booking.
Really enjoyed the ambience, food and having it all chosen out for us by the staff. Would definitely return for a “hot date night”
Second visit to Hell Of The North. This time was to introduce friends from out of town to it's awesome. They had a wonderful time and are still talking about the pork. For me the service from the wait staff was one of best restaurant experiences I've had. Appropriately attentive and accomodating. The setting and ambience of the venue was lovely and cosy. It was the perfect place to be on a cold winters night.
If you are European or want to relive the holiday feeling and looking for the warm French gastronomic hospitality and atmosphere, just walk past.
No bread, olives, pepper/salt, candle on the tables. No table cloth and just paper napkin. Cold inside, bring an extra layer. In and out within 2 hours.
Rough water pouring, pjew we kept dry cloths.
Entree chicken pate - very tasteful, double dip in sweet crumble - not so sure about the sweet element in a starter.
Onion soup - nice portion, where is the slice of bread?
Duck 3 ways in broth - how to consume the broth? 'just bring the plate to your mouth' re waitress.
Side dishes :cauliflower (small portion) and fries (average).
Dessert: creme brûlée: top layer not hard, disappointing.
The bill: $245 for 3 including 2 alcoholic consumptions.
Tip: send your staff on a working holiday to France and reap the rewards
B’day booking for my wife & had requested private dining. Was positioned next to apparent friends/acquaintances of waiter and continued banter between the two parties ruined any sense of occasion. Whenever waiter came across, conversations became loud and attention-seeking, language crass, and peppered with grotesque sexist remarks - cue chauvinistic laughter.
Outstanding food, waiter was knowledgeable & personable when attending to us but ruined the ambience of the evening. His lack of respect and disregard for the impact his interactions were having on those close by was totally unprofessional. We rarely treat ourselves to dinners such as this so it was extremely disappointing to have this experience.
Spectacular food and exceptional service - great wine recommendations that were sympathetic to our requests. Can’t wait to go back up with the best Melbourne has to offer
Had such a beautiful at Hell of the North as usual 🙂🙂🙂
We had a magic lunch experience. The food was perfect and customised to suit our likes and dislikes. The quality and diversity was what we had experienced in the past and our favourite French onion soup served to perfection.
The matched wines were well considered and throughly explained to ensure we made the most of our time there.
We will be back!
Fabulous night out spent with old friends. The Eat Me Menu is plentiful and we all enjoyed the different courses, looked after by Mark with great wines to match....definitely go back to Hell. Thanks
It was the perfect place to celebrate 10 years of togetherness with my husband. Delicious food with something for everyone, and attentive service that wasn’t over the top. I highly recommend you Go To Hell!
Fantastic food service and wine. Would prefer not to get the hurry up for the second sitting especially when they are not there and it only takes 2 minutes to reset a table of 4.
We will return again and again to Hell. Not only is the food outstanding but the ambience, music and all of the staff make for a perfect night out. Whether you want to go full hog, like we do, and order as much as you can eat or just feel like a delicious wine and nibble at the bar, Hell of the North truly delivers on quality. The seasonal menu means we can return several times a year and never get bored, there is always something new, exciting and simply delicious!
Exceptional quality of food, drink and service. A truly wonderful night out with friends always. Highly recommended.
We had the 3-course "feed me" option which was tops, and easily customisable for dietaries. We definitely want to go back when we have more time to experience the 5-course. The cocktails were awesome!
I have been to hell over 10 times and every time it has been amazing!
Was recommended by a client to try and it did not disappoint. Great food and atmosphere. The waitress was great
While Hell of the North was a good experience, it just missed the mark with a few things.
The dishes were quality there is no denying that, but it fell short of amazing.
Great night at Hell of the North. Group of 6, with 1 pregnant and 1 gluten intolerant- we all ordered the 3 course degustation and were very impressed
Great service. Lovely food enjoyed the entire dining experience . Will certainly revisit.
Fantastic night out !
As repeat visitors we knew what to expect though were again surprised at how good this place is.
We chose the feed me 5 course option and by the time we were finished I’m sure we had more than that, thanks.
If you’re in doubt about wine ask for help, we did and found a few gems
Seriously, come here. It’s a great restaurant.
Absolutely delicious food. We did the feed me menu and every dish was amazing. Friendly service and great atmosphere. You definitely feel like you are dining in Europe!
We had the tasting menu (3 course, savory) and it was phenomenal. We had two excellent wines, both French, which were recommended by the fantastic staff. It's not a cheap night out, but for the quality of food, wine and service, it's extraordinary.
Amazing food ! Romantic setting, just a bit better service when asking for the bill and getting the menus at the start.
Other than that excellent !
Yum. Especially the desserts.
This is our fifth time at Hell of the North and yet again we had a wonderful night
We had such a lovely evening. The staff were excellent and knowledgable and the food was amazing. We had the “feed me” option and just had so much food and do many different tastes it was really so good
Always great to visit
As always Hell of the North delivers - great food, wine list and service. It is a wonderful restaurant and never disappoints.
What a shame this place is let down by its self-affected vibe.
The food is excellent but I wouldn't be recommending the place.
The service we were treated to was conceited at best and being told it was a 'policy' that they couldn't let us take away our leftovers..did I say the food was delicious?.. and that they wouldn't entertain the idea of us signing off a waiver, was narrow-minded, wasteful and disappointing.
We enjoyed the evening and the food was delicious. I thought the portions were a little small. The wine list is heavily French based and really too expensive. There should be a few more local and less expensive bottles offered.
The staff were pleasant and the restaurant is attractive.
The staff are friendly and professional, the food and wine are delicious, and the atmosphere is cozy. Hell of the North really offers a delightful experience!
Food was good- authentic French cooking. Some dishes were excellent and a couple ordinary. The service is all over the place. It’s more aligned to a pub than a restaurant.
Always lovely and delicious. Great for weekend lunches.
