Gowings Bar & Grill Ratings and Reviews
This is the third time I’ve been to Gowlings and the first time I’ve been disappointed there. Pre dinner drinks service was nonexistent despite there being three people behind the bar. Ambiance has taken a turn for the worse, it’s no longer somewhere to be considered classy. Other service staff (with one or two exceptions) are pretentious without having the service skills to warrant it. The scotch fillet steak was delicious however, my girlfriend’s chicken dish was oily.
We won’t be returning.
Generally very disappointed with the experience. We had a 2 hour time slot for the meal, but were rushed through the first 45 minutes, so had eaten the meal by the 1 hour mark. Presentation was average, with a slice of cheesecake on a plate with no sauce or garnish being less than you get at most cafes. Waited an eternity to get the bill and eventually had to go up and pay. Overall value was very poor, 4 prawns for $48 main course drowning in butter.
Had a very enjoyable lunch at Gowings Bar & Grill. We shared our mains, which made it possible to experience more than one plate. The food was delicious and well presented.
My two disappointments were the lack of accompaniments with the main meals. I don't like being forced to order extras to a meal, these should be "nice to haves".
Like a lot of venues, they have a view that everyone likes loud music. I'd be curious to know if they did a survey of their customers if they actually do.
Avoid at all costs... I have never been more disappointed in a restaurant experience. Having dined at Gowings Bar and Grill at least 10 times over the years, entertaining family, friends and overseas guests, we were looking forward to a special night out anniversary dinner.
What we experienced was such a dramatic decline in food quality, service and overall enjoyment we will never visit (or refer to friends) this restaurant again.
Upon arrival we were advised of the change in chef, menu and overall approach to the dining philosophy with influences from NY, Japan and Paris. Having dined in all three of these cities there was absolutely nothing reflective of these dining's cultures. There was however a blinding lack of self awareness around what constitutes a memorable dining experience. There was no celebration of the food, it's origins, appreciation of ingredients, attention to detail, creative inspiration. It was a soul-less, taste-less, joy-less experience that left me $400 worse of for the privilege. I can only summise that profit and pretense are the driving motivations behind the restaurant today. Sydney has so much more to offer with outstanding chefs, international influences resulting in great food, it's such a shame when an old favourite completely loses the plot.
tables for 2 too close to one another and tables themselves in rectangular orientation if turned 90 degrees then you are closer to your dining guest, so can hear them more easily and also more intimate and also less likely to hear convo of person next to you thanks
Way, way too much of the "favourites" taken from the old menu. Wait staff do their best to apologise and explan there's a new chef. All steaks used to come with fries.......now, nothing. What a shame. I loved Gowings B&G. Thankfully lots of other options in the CBD.
Lunch with my sister. Staff were very pleasant and gave good service. The food was nice but nothing special. PR was excellent. We happened to be seated by a table which became very noisy. We did not make any remarks about this but we were not charged for our desserts because of the noisy table - excellent PR.
Food was great .
Service was really poor no wait staff come to refill drinks empty glasses and water. Asked for a another glass of wine to only be given a new empty glass by that time we had finished ohr meal .
Trying to get any staff tgo get the bill was a ordeal . Took about 25minutes .
Used to be my go to restaurant for a tractor special occasion.
I was so looking forward to taking a friend there.
We turned up for the Friday night reservation and were swiftly advised there is a new chef do the menu has changed. No Mac’n’Cheese. What!!!
Oh, and they have run out of chips and mash?? I simply don’t understudy? How do you not cater for chips and mash?? On a Friday night ?
Desert hasn’t changed but they had also run out of the main choices...
Time to find a new favourite.
We went before the ballet at the State Theatre. Excellent location - effectively in the same building.
Booked online and had a courtesy call from the restaurant on the day, just confirming. I like that because it confirms it for me too.
Service was friendly, prompt and not at all intrusive.
Food was well done, with good portion sizes and quickly delivered.
The service at Gowings is second to none. The presentation of the plated meals is near perfect. The only complaint I have which I made staff aware was the coffee. Long Blacks should still have a nice even layer of crema on top yet our 2 coffees (one of which was a 3/4 full LB) was flat shiny black. They made mention that they were considering going back to All Press.
Third visit. Service and food have slipped. Not once were we asked if the food was good or was water topped up without asking. Ordered bottled beer and it took 2 requests to have it delivered. No excuse
Wait staff were not overly busy just inexperienced and unenthusiastic
Everything was amazing. The staff were impeccable especially the waiter. I didn't catch his name but he was Italian. And the lovely girl who was making sure our glasses were filled and that everything was fine with our meal.I cannot fault anything. Our meals were cooked to perfection. My husband and I had organized a romantic dinner and this restaurant clearly exceeded our expectations. We had a wonderful night. We would love to have dinner at Gowings Bar and Grill again.
Wonderful evening as always Gowrings! Amazing food, excellent service (Andrew A best waiter ever 😘) ... love the little attentions to detail and great recommendations plus very flexible with what we ordered when. Try the sparking Rose if you fancy splashing out and like drier Rose ... think it's called Deviation. Top tip to avoid the theatre crowd if you can as gets a little busy then but not in any way to impact the evening. Just wonderful ... thank you x
Wanted to try this restaurant as a result of the hype and numerous reviews. We were seated quickly which was great. Table had ample space but we had to raise our voices considerably due to loud music playing. Service was great from the first waiter, but was absent for a while after his shift finished. Food quality unfortunately did not match the price tag. Poor experience in summary. Will not be going back to Gowings and will not be recommending to friends.
I took my friend to Gowings for a dinner catch up. I was extremely disappointed with the service. I got over charged for my drinks at the bar. We made a table booking and we were told to wait at the bar. We waited for half an hour and no one came to get us until we received a phone call asking if I would like to keep my reservation. I would expect a better service even on a busy Saturday night.
I just love this place, always have.
I took two friends for dinner last night, one had been with me many times before the other had not but she said she new why I rave about this place.
The food is always great, I love my wine and they always seem to have what I like.
The service is always first class, last night two of my favourite girls were there, Lada and Nola, I always worry I will spell their names wrong and they always make you feel at home, what more can you ask for.
Great vibe but a little concerned about food handling practices as was sitting next to kitchen and watched chef during the night. First tongs dropped on the floor and he picked them up (2 sets) and kept using them. Then he tasted some sauce out of a pot and promptly put the spoon back in the pot.
After an appalling first night with an awful schnitzel, this time was much better with an oversized T-bone steak cooked to perfection My biggest issue with this place is the noise level and erratic service, but the food is excellent despite a generally limited menu and no daily specials. But for steak lovers this is excellent and their dessert selection is terrific es[pecially the pavlova.
