About

Nestled in the bustling theatre precinct sits the home of Melbourne’s favourite hawker-style street food. Over 10 years, Gingerboy has become a laneway icon, along with the Australian freestyle cuisine Chef Teage Ezard has become known for.

With fresh produce and protein at the forefront, Gingerboy has become known for small bites like mushroom dumplings and scallop sui mai, as well as sharing plates such as the red duck leg curry and whole fried fish. Cocktails are never an afterthought, perfectly blended with their own unique take on the Asian fusion style, and given a home away from home at Gingerboy Upstairs.

Our group of 6 friends thoroughly enjoyed our booking for The Melbourne Food & Wine
Restaurant Express lunch. Food was delicious . Wine was excellent also.
Two of the group had dietary issues which were handled discreetly by the waiting staff. Staff friendly, welcoming & attentive to our needs. We all agreed that we would come back to Gingerboy again.

Food is great I have been here 6 or 7 times now when I’m in Melbourne. Not a huge fan of the beer selection, but otherwise everything is great!

I've NEVER left a bad review, but the other day at Gingerboy it was a disaster.

Reserved a table via Open Table for a birthday occasion. When we showed up, was told that no booking existed (even though I had email and mobile confirmations) because the system doesn't link with the restaurant.

Waited 30 mins, finally they placed us upstairs but the top floor had total lack of service and managed by the most slow paced downbeat bartender (perhaps the lack of staff upstairs forcing him to serve is making him hate his job?) Worst menu explanation too, sounded almost like he has never dined in the restaurant.

Guests were getting annoyed with the attitude and no service, we complained and luckily was able to be moved downstairs with the other diners. From then on the night was fine and the staff a LOT nicer, attentive and gasps - actually smiling!

Almost ruined a special occasion. Gingerboy, what happened? You used to be on my list for top Melbourne restaurants. If the online booking system doesn't work, then don't use it. If your staff needs support, re-evaluate your capacity. Highly highly disappointed. Will definitely not visit anymore, especially not for special occasions.

Gingerboy is my go-to restaurant for international guests. It never disappoints with its amazing flavors and food presentation. The staff and friendly and attentive, but not intrusive.

We booked online to entertain friends from interstate thru Opentable. Our reservation was not actioned, despite receiving a confirmation email and a text the day prior. Very nice staff contacted us apologising for the mishap. I was extremely impressed with Gingerboys attempts to recover the situation but there was no outcome as only slot available now was 2045. Our original reservation was at 1845. We had spaghetti bolognaise at home. We were left very very disappointed as a result of a booking malfunction during the xmas season. And yes, it was my husbands birthday.

Maybe we went on an off night. We had been told about the pedigree of Gingerboy and its reputation since opening has been obvious. Despite requesting to sit in main restaurant, we were put upstairs and this was like a dead zone. No atmosphere, no music. We asked for the Four Pillars special Prosecco cocktail. It hadn't been mixed properly - more like layered, so needed furious stirring by all at table to get to taste properly. We ordered the $90 banquet, including the Wagyu. It was a lot of food - lots of fried things at the start to fill you up, the waitress was great - and really took us through the journey of what was on each plate. But when she went on break, the next waitress couldn't care and dumped food and ran! and the plates came at random times - sometimes long waits, sometimes quick. The best part of the banquet came in the last courses, but by that stage we were too full. Not one dish was a standout or must have. The Wagyu was only 4 slices of beef, and couldn't taste any sauce on it. The duck leg red curry was served with corn balls - but the waitress suggested dipping in curry sauce to give them flavour?
I think in short, we turned up on a night when Gingerboy was not in top form. I can't think of any particular reason to return because neither food nor service (except the one waitress) was anything special - a shame

Initially had no record of our booking but accommodated us quickly. Decor feels a little dated and I was disappointed with the food. It tasted good but is not in the same caliber as other modern-Asian CBD counterparts. Feed me menu is more pricey than others in the area. Don't think I will return in a hurry.

The food was okay but as Asian flavour fans, we were a bit disappointed - nothing 'wowed' us. We went early, 6.30pm Saturday night, expecting it to be quiet, but there was a significant pre-show element as it is near a theatre, so it was full. As there are many tables, that means crowded and busy busy. We prefer a tad quieter and less squashy. The best part was the service, which was attentive and thoughtful, definitely above average. The offer to create a banquet with your tastes in mind, is a great idea.

The bar staff were good and really creative with cocktails - made based on what flavours you liked. Did not disappoint.
Starter and Entree were delicious - really really tasty, however let down by the main. We ordered the Wagyu Beef Rendang and expected a thick, unctuous rendang where the meat had been cooked / basting in for several hours - however it was simply wagyu beef (which was nice) with a rendang sauce poured over it. A bit dissapointing and wouldn't eat again. Dessert was nice. Service was great, and excellent selection of wine.

Service was mostly good but waitress was unclear about the banquet menu, referring to it as being: A set three course meal; a flexible range of dishes to suit our tastes; a fixed selection of dishes. We ordered a la carté. Quail was outstanding, succulently cooked & served with simple and delicious accompaniment. That's it. Noisy, horrible plastic chairs that you slide off of, tempura cuttlefish was soggy, overwhelmed by salt and accompaniments were dry and extremely salty, snapper that was dry, overcooked and had a sauce that was like pure shrimp paste. Why? I hate paying almost $60 for wagyu I can't chew. When I told the waitress, she said sorry and then said she could pass on the info. Dessert share plate was interesting and not bad value but our meal was ruined by then and we left hungry and feeling like we'd wasted a special evening as well as lots of money. I cannot believe some reviews. This place is way overpriced and overrated. Maybe better for snacking.

We have been to Gingerboy a number of times and usually love the food. Seemed like the chef has changed as our favourite dishes weren't up to the previous standard. Son in law eggs were soft on the outside instead of crunchy, chicken ribs were sweaty and not crisp like they had been heated in a microwave. Disappointing as we used to love this place. Sadly much better options in the city now.

Maybe Mondays are a quieter time of the week but it helped in conversation and relaxation. GingerBoy is one of the best restaurants in Melbourne.

This is our second time to Ginger Boy. After our first experience upstairs we looked forward to trying the downstairs restaurant - unfortunately this has changed our mind on the restaurant.

We found the restaurant and staff unfriendly. On entering the restaurant it is not obvious which way to go and the bar staff completely ignored us not even taking the time to point the way whilst they eat dumplings. Service of everything from drinks through to the food was slow. One share dish was delivered well after we finished the other dishes and only arrived after prompting staff on two occasions, no apology or explanation was offered however we did receive an unprompted complimentary salad.

The food is very nicely cooked and full of flavor and if the staff and surroundings improved we would consider this to be a wonderful restaurant and worth the value however as we experienced it a good Asian restaurant around the corner would be a better prospect.

The waiters and waitress were quite friendly and helpful.
Need to watch the prices a bit a some of the prices are above ones charged by similar restaurants

Food wasn't bad, but nothing to rave about.
Ordered the son in law eggs well done as I'm pregnant. The waitress said the chef wouldn't do them well done so we only ordered 2 for my partner. Waitress said everything else was suitable or could be amended. We ordered the quail and she didn't mention anything about needing to alter it. The quail came out rear (actually pretty much roar in parts) and the eggs came out well done....

Food was okay but definitely overpriced. Had a Wagyu beef brisket rendang which had 5 Chunks of beef (more fat than meat) and some sweet potato for 40 dollars. Gingerboy used to be great but now I struggle looking at the menu and being enticed by the offerings. Service was great. The overall ambiance in the room was too loud, found myself shouting just to have a conversation.

My lunch guest was my niece from Brisbane. I chose Gingerboy because of its location in a Melbourne lane, its great reputation and I knew that it offered a variety of vegetarian dishes to suit her food preference. I was not disappointed. Although we had an early lunch there were other diners enjoying themselves around us. The staff were helpful and the food was delicious. I look forward to a return visit to sample some of the meat dishes. They sounded wonderful too. J
