Gilson’s intimate dining room is available for breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week and caters for large groups and exclusive events.
Gilson offers an ever evolving all day menu focusing on Italian cuisine and seasonal flavours.
A neighbourhood favourite due to its relaxed setting, friendly staff, fabulous drinks list and dishes such as the ‘avocado bruschetta’ for breakfast, the ‘Rigatoni, lamb ragu, ricotta salata, gremolata’ for lunch or dinner, and their take on a tiramisu for dessert, a ‘Baba-Misu, mascarpone cream, cocoa’.
Wood fired pizza is also available for lunch and dinner cooked in the custom built oven.
Amazing food, and amazing services despite how busy it was
Arrogant and below average is an understatement!
We have just experienced a second astonishingly dinner dinning experience at Gilson South Yarra and were bitterly disappointed. Limited menu options, the presentation unsanitary with dirty glasses and lack of space between tables, terrible service but so was the bland food.
Value for money is non existent then factor in weekend surcharge.
Managers and waitstaff preoccupied and too busy on phones or drinking with regulars, as if it’s a bar and unfamiliar faces there for diner supporting small businesses are simply ignored and treated as an inconvenience.
Will NEVER return.
Amazing! Loved my dinner and the experience.
Great spot for a relaxing brunch or long lunch. Staff are very friendly and attentive happily arranging a vegan meal for one of our party. Nice wine list and menu options.
Too noisy inside for us with our booked table (fairly old and hard of hearing), so kindly helped us re-locate outside with our interstate friends. Food was pretty good and service OK. Thankyou.
Visiting from Sydney we opted to avoid the weekend rush at Gilsons given the poor reviews during peak times. (Despite the 10% surcharge & limited menu options over weekends)
Our off peak breakfast was no better....
Overcooked bland eggs & soggy fritters, sides are small & pricey & coffee bitter.
We had to ask for water and were presented with grubby glasses with lipstick stains!
Perhaps regulars receive better service as we had to either get up or wave staff down - as they were either too busy chatting at length to patrons, amongst themselves or on mobile phones.
When we did eventually manage to get service it felt like an inconvenience which created for a very unpleasant dining experience, staff are disinterested and quite frankly rude.
Only positive, attractive street scope with garden views & close proximity to tennis which we attended after.
Very disappointing & underwhelming food & service by nonchalant staff, we were not even asked upon paying how everything was, a little follow up table service mid meal is appreciated.
With the abundance of exciting & well regarded restaurants Melbourne has to offer, in particular CBD & South Yarra, Gilsons despite location is not worth the $ despite an initially appealing menu, unfortunately they fail to execute.
All smoke and mirrors. Would not return or recommend.
I always love their Carpaccio, and this time I tried the potato gnocchi with salsicha. Gnocchi was amazingly soft and light! I’m coming back for more!
Gilson’s is a great local. It’s not high end fare, simply reliable, tasty food. The service is always friendly. Their pizza’s and pastas are a stand out. The school prawns are fantastic. Love this place.
Great place to catch up with friends. Great food, especially the tortellini and the antipasto was a large serve. The right amount of fancy and casual.
The Gilson was noisy for Sunday brunch, but food was good. However the lunch menu was not available. There was only one toilet which was not great and led to long queues. My son got a shard of glass in his bottom, presumably from a broken glass.
The Pizza was so dry and not enough tomato paste on its dough. Even all toppings was so cold and uncooked.
The Salad was poorly made and not enough dressing. No garnish !
The weekend charge is ridiculous 10% on Saturday plus another charge on my receipt which I felt we were ripped off by the restaurant.
Not happy for the price I paid!
We went with our two young kids and we all enjoyed it.
For $22 you get a plate of parsley, about 1/2 a teaspoon of yoghurt and bland, boring and mushy zucchini fritters.. $16 for a tiny bacon and (overcooked) egg sandwich was an absolute waste of money. If you appreciate value and quality, stay clear of Gilson
Great waiter, but unfortunately very disappointing food
Fantastic experience, great value and superb service
Incredible food that is actually decently priced. Loved the atmosphere and the staff were all super friendly.
Great spot for casual/relaxed dining with a wonderful European street-side cafe feel. The host, service, cocktails, food and atmosphere were all excellent. ...I highly recommend Gilson in South Yarra!
LOVELY LOCATION WITH GREAT EYE CANDY.
FOOD IS OVERPRICED
SERVICE IS A LITTLE CONFUSED.
WE WERE ASKED NOT NOT ONCE,NOT TWICE BUT THREE TIMES IF WE WANTED COFFEES WE HAD NOT ORDERED.
It was a little noisy, and they forgot our order...
We booked Gilsons for my daughters 21st birthday the staff were very helpful and tentative. Food was delicious. I really could not fault the restaurant. They made my daughters night something special for that l thank them. I would definitely recommend it to anyone and most certainly be going back.
The vibe here is usually great especially in the warmer months. The service was just a little poor and I had to case the waitress a couple of times.
My prawn/chilli pasta was very good. Service lacking slightly.
It was so noisy that we had to leave early. The food was passable but not particularly cheap for the quality. The serving of wine was generous.
Excellent variety. One of the best Pizzas I have ever had. Absolutely delicious.
Friendly and efficient service. Great atmospheres.
The food here is actually amazing. The service how ever was quite terrible. We had made a booking and once we arrived we were seated. Then another waitress came over and rudely asked if we had a booking or not or if we just sat down without one. I tried to order lasagna which is on the menu but was told there is none left. (This was not mentioned when we were handed the menus) also the 3rd time this has happened to me here. We ordered 1 entree to share and that took 40 minutes to come out. The mains that were ordered At the same time took another hour. Was not impressed. The other people around us that got there after us were all done an hour before us. We ordered more drinks which then took another 30 minutes to come. By this point our food was done. I love the venue and the food so it was quite upsetting.
Service was horrible. Wasn’t even busy and the kitchen couldn’t keep up
Gilson’s is a very reliable restaurant. From breakfast through to dinner there is always a dish to suit your appetite. And it has been my experience that they are more than happy to make modifications to a dish when requested. The service is quick, polite and friendly. The venue is modern and clean. My only complaint ( and it’s not really) is that it can get a bit noisy.
This local is a winner.
BEST CHICKEN PARMA I’VE EVER HAD! Tender, juicy chicken, quality toppings and outstanding crispy crumb! Perfect side salad and chips too.
Food and service was fantastic - had seen ‘disco tunes’ from 9pm on the menu however it was extremely quiet for a Friday night and we were handed the bill at before 10pm.
Not the atmosphere I thought it would be.
I love the lowkey, European, dimly lit, quiet and tasteful vibe of Gilson. The food was beautifully cooked, good portion sizes, and just overall unfussy. A new favourite
Review given based on unavailability of menu items and ingredients and incorrect orders being put through. Despite this, service was still good!
The service was the worst part of the night by far. We were given two drinks menus for a table of four people - which were only given to the men at the table. After ordering drinks, we were not given any food menus until we asked for them. The water jug at the table was never replaced, and our dishes all came out at different times. We were never asked if we wanted another drink after finishing our first drinks, and were never asked how we were going throughout the whole night. Although the service was poor, the food was good, however I will not be going back.
Everything was amazing!! We had the gnocchi and the pepperoni pizza and they were both delicious!! We wanted dessert, but they dont do them!
Great food, great vibe. A great spot for a drink or big meal with friends. Absolutely love the service, particularly Marc & Jamie. They really make you feel at home.
Everything was quite good but it was hard to enjoy ourselves with the noise levels.
Fantastic service. Entertaining waitstaff, generous dessert!!
As always exceptional food, service and vino! We love this place and will continue to be regulars ❤️❤️
The service and ambience was excellent, and despite being on par with any relaxed fine dining establishment, they have a great children’s menu and we were made to feel very welcome, complete with colouring in.
My trout on caponata was exquisite, their wine list and aperitifs a delight, and I will be happily returning.
There was no gluten free bread for 2 of my friends and they weren’t offered a reduction in cost!
A weekend surcharge on Mother’s Day was disappointing.
I had 3 text messages & a phone call about my 8am booking. As the restaurant only had 2 other customers at 8am it created unnecessary entries in my calendar.
Very poor value for money.
After eating breakfast at Gilsons for the past few years before the Mother’s Day Classic, we will go elsewhere next Mother’s Day
Gilson is in a lovely spot, opposite the Royal Botanic Gardens and relatively close to the arts precinct. We had an early concert and the staff were aware of that and things moved speedily. We couldn't linger but we were pleased with the rhythm that got us where we were going in ample time. It was a remarkable mild autumn evening and Gilson added to our enjoyment.
Gilson does offer delivery in partnership with Deliveroo.
