Climb the narrow flight of stairs up from the red brick lane to enter the saloon. A room that is at once spacious, open and rambling, one side lined by a wall of windows, the other a splendid bar of long fluted zinc; counterpoint to the perfectly proportioned, intimate beauty of its little brother downstairs.

Spanning the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, French Saloon borrows from the decadence and familiarity of the Parisian bar & bistro, while finding common ground with the enjoyment of raucous company and a sense of mischief. Start with Champagne and caviar at the bar, progress with steak tartare and bottles of Burgundy. A dining room to some, a bar for well-made cocktails and snacks for others – above all, a room for good fun and a party.

Each dish was delicate and flavourful. Clearly substantial care and attention onto each dish. Menu options were a little limited and menu layout was slightly confusing. Internal seating was well planned to allow private conversation in an open seating configuration. Perfect from business lunch. Highly recommend French Saloon

Good service - friendly and well informed. Excellent food, enjoyed all of 5 entrees (shared) and a delicious creme caramel for desert.

A relaxed and comfortable feel.

I look forward to returning soon!

Delicious as always! Went for an impromptu birthday dinner and was thoroughly impressed with the service and food! Star attraction was the raw tuna to start - flavours were beautiful! The 700g dry aged Cape Grim steak was immaculate and a special kudos to our waitress - she was a fantastic host and really added to our experience at French Saloon!

Amazing, I went to the French Saloon for my Girlfriends Birthday. The Staff were so friendly and nice, the food was beyond amazing, I am still dreaming about the Duck. I couldn't recommend a better venue in Melbourne

Amazing, the restaurant lives up to its reviews, which sadly is not the case for all restaurants in Melbourne. Totally worth flying to Melbourne for this.

We enjoyed our food but found the menu quite mystifying with some elements obviously priced/scaled for sharing and others apparently a single serve. The menu was not at all easy to navigate for anyone with special food needs, but our waitress gave us some pointers and that helped. The three of us ended up composing our shared meal of several sides and one mains which took some debate to pull into well composed meal. Because all the dishes were so disparate, it wasn't easy to combine them. While it took more effort than we wanted, what we ended up with was unusual and tasty. I would rate the experience higher except that we spent more time sorting out the menu than we wanted and that dominates the memory. Someone on a date night or wanting to just enjoy themselves might not enjoy it either. Thanks for a great meal but I remember the effort more than the food.

A wonderful evening where the ambiance had us feeling transported out of Melbourne. A mid sized intimated feeling restaurant with impeccable service and not too loud. Great for special occasions or a romantic night.

A totally divine lunch in a restaurant that is confident in what it offers and does that extremely well. A pleasure to eat such beautifully prepared dishes where the ingredients are the superstars. Staff lovely and I would highly recommend for a small group or a special occasion.

Visited the French Saloon for my birthday. The service was very good, staff friendly and attentive. The meals were a mix between really nice and a little ho hum. Plus, I was hoping for some real french ambience. The place felt like a french restaurant but the 80's music, which was a little loud detracted from the experience. We each had an entree and main and shared a desert plus 4 alcoholic drinks and it was $226 which I felt was a touch expensive.

The restaurant location is difficult to find. We had a good dinner but nothing was exceptional about the dinner. Too many tables were cramped into a second floor storeroom with no noteworthy features. Our dishes were being cleared almost before we were done eating. As I discussed this review with my wife, we had difficulty remembering what we ate. We enjoyed the meal but it is a bad sign nothing was noteworthy enough to facilitate our memory. The wine choices were good but the prices quite steep. We would still recommend the restaurant as a nice albeit expensive meal despite these negative notations.

We were very confused with the menu offerings. Apparently some dishes are for sharing but no real explanation on the menu or from staff. Food was underwhelming & not very tasty. I’ve never eaten french food like this before even in France. Won’t be back

French Saloon always impresses. It is a fantastic spot for a business lunch or somewhat special dinner. Hidden above the equally fabulous Kirk's Wine Bar in Hardware Lane, French Saloon is spacious, friendly and full of light .
The food is always fresh, interesting and bursting with flavour. Well presented dishes are fantastic to share. The largely French wine list may not be so easy to navigate for the average diner, but the sommelier helps to make those decisions easy.
Added up, the experience isn't cheap, but it is fantastic and feels like value for money. It is a place I love to take people to impress!

I was recommended this restaurant by a good friend - I took a business colleague there who was visiting from New York. He loved it and so did I.

The food was truly delicious and the plating was extremely generous. Beautiful wines….

I would return to French Saloon in a minute - I just wish it was a little closer to home.

Casual but with an authentic French feel. Good feed although a slightly limited menu. Wine and beer selection also good. Excellent to have wait staff with outrageous French accents. A bit on the expensive side; 2 mains, 1 dessert, 2 beers and one of the least expensive bottles of wine =$203

Service was a bit less than responsive, as I sat a while with an empty water glass while the table next to me was had their water glasses filled. The server didn’t check to see if my glass needed filling, but left the area. The place is incredibly loud! Don’t go for an intimate dinner and conversation, more likely you’ll be engaged in a yelling battle. The food was acceptable. I had the steak frites, both the steak and the frites were done as expected and delivered in reasonable time. All in all an okay experience.
