About Founding Farmers - DC
Founding Farmers, the Greenest Restaurant in DC, is owned by the more than 40,000 family farmers of the NDFU, serving American inspired real food and drink with an emphasis and focus on cooking from scratch.
While our restaurant is supplied by hundreds of family farms everywhere, that doesn’t mean we know every farm, and that doesn’t mean we never have to buy product from the traditional (corporate) supply chain, but it does mean we’re working hard to direct our purchasing dollars where it aligns with our values.
We’re serving the best food we can, made from scratch in our kitchens every day. Our innovative, American dishes are made primarily with pure ingredients honoring the farmers and their hard-earned bounty.
The restaurant is upscale casual, which welcomes business casual dress, and dress that would be appropriate in a nice restaurant; this includes jeans and athletic wear, and warm-weather clothing, including shorts.

Founding Farmers - DC Ratings and Reviews
Great bar, great food and service to match. We ordered the beignets to share. My husband thought they were greasy but I actually enjoyed them despite that being true. I had the chicken and waffles which was really good. My husband had the traditional Benedict which he thought was cooked perfectly and tasted delicious. We could tell everything is freshly prepared and cooked to order. We ordered a mimosa for each. If you like yours with just a splash of O.J., make sure to request it, as ours were more O.J. than champagne. We had a 9:15 reservation but arrived about 15 minutes early and there were still some seats available at the bar. By the time we were sat at our reservation time, the line was overflowing out the door. The noise level is high, so if you’re looking for a place to have a romantic quiet meal...this is not it. This didn’t bother us though. Overall we had a really nice experience and when we return to D.C. we will most likely visit there again.
Leah provided great service. Food was a mixed bag. Salmon was cooked and tasted great. The carrots were very good, but the mashed potatoes were very average at best. Short ribs and Mac n Cheese were very good, but the brussel sprouts were probably the worst that I have had at a restaurant. They were way too sweet and over powered any flavor from the bacon. They have have a lot of interesting sounding things on the menu and we would probably try again when back in town. The place is really loud.
ThIs place was awesome. The food was excellent and our server was as well. The only frustration was we made a reservation for 715. Upon arriving we were told 5-7 minutes. After finally getting seated at about 7:45 our server was prompt. So even if you make a reservation be prepared to wait. Overall this place is great.
Even though we had a reservation (through OpenTable) and had checked in we still waited about 30 minutes to be seated. They were seating 4-tops without reservations ahead of us. We made a reservation for a reason especially during lunch as time is more limited. As a result, we won’t be going back there. Everything else was fine but being unable to seat reservations defeats the idea of making reservations.
I enjoyed my experience at Founding Farmers immensely. The food and the service was wonderful. However, it was definitely NOT my favorite choice for a romantic dinner with my partner on her birthday. We are both sensitive to noise.
We will definitely go again, possibly for brunch or for a gathering with friends, but will know what to expect next time.
I go to Founding Farmers a few times a year since I work nearby and the service is alwats good. Yesterday I ordered the Impossible burger and told the server I was vegan so no chesse please and asked for sauteed mushrooms and onions and avocado. The burger came out with cheese I showed it to the waitress who apologized and took it back immediately. The fixed burger came out with only mushrooms, no avocado no onions so much time had already passed I told her not to worry about it. I enjoyed the Impossible Burger it really lives up to the hype! My husband is also vegan so I ordered one to go. I asked for it to be plain just lettuce and tomato no sauce abd repeated it and the server wrote it down. When it came I looked and it appeared to be as ordered which was important since my husband does not eat condiments. I went an extra step and asked for two sauces on the side so they would not put the sauce on the burger. Well low and behold there ended up ne sauce on the bottom of the bun 😐 I know you all emphasize the importance of your meals being made to order so I have no idea how one person got three incorrect meals. I am not sure if the issue was my server or the issue was the kitchen but I would like to mention this so everyone is aware especially for your Vegan patrons. There should be no way a plant based burger ordered vegan style should come to cheese. Im just glad I caught it before I took a big bite.
The food is the only thing that keeps us coming back. During this reservation I specifically requested that we not be sat at a certain table due to our party of six, and where does the hostess take us?? That's right, to the table we requested not to have. It's always a fight at this location. The host staff is usually rude. None of the servers, except one Russian guy, provide great service. Once, we arrived 15 minutes before our reservation so that we could get the breakfast menu. They refused to seat us before our reservation time, even though there were plenty of open tables, and refused to allow us to order off the breakfast menu. This location is not customer service oriented. Period.
My friend's daughter unexpectedly was in town and showed up to join us for a drink. Because the reservation was only for a table for two I asked if we could pull up a chair for a short while and was told instead we'd need to wait longer to get a table for three. The daughter declined to ruin our plans and keep us waiting longer for a table so she left. We were eventually seated at a table for two but one side was a bench seat with plenty of room for the daughter to have joined us for a drink without inconveniencing anyone on either side. It was too bad the restaurant wasn't looking to help in the situation but instead became an obstacle.
Founding Farmers was recommended to us by our next-door neighbor here in New York. I'm glad we made a reservation as soon as we heard about it because little did we know that everyone in D.C. knows about Founding Farmers. From the moment we stepped through the front doors, we felt like we were treated with special care. We weren't. As it turns out, FF treats everyone like that! The waitstaff, the food, the cost...all fantastic. We'll be back when next we come to town!
Went for brunch with my mom before a show at the Kennedy Center. Food was really yummy, they were super busy but we only had to wait a couple minutes to be seated (with reservations of course). My only complaint is that our table was super close to the one next to us (maybe 6 inches away). I felt like we were on that couples date. The people on the other side actually offered us a bite of their food we were so close! It was friendly and funny, but I wish it had been a little more private. Not anything that would make me not go back. I was still happy with our choice!
Founding Farmers has always had ridiculous wait times and reservations sold out weeks in advance for brunch. Now I understand why! Everything about this place was phenomenal. Drinks a little pricey, but even the quality of the drinks solidified the dollar amount. I could not believe the food either. Filled with flavor and a balanced use of spices while maintaining the integrity of the food. Also, the service was great!
We had our best meals at The Founding Farmer. First we had an early dinner. The meat in my hamburger was excellent!! Everyone in our party really enjoyed their meals. So much so that we went back to The Founding Farmer for breakfast. The eggs were perfectly cooked, the sides were very good but the bacon was the only let down. Also the fresh squeezed OJ was some of the best I've ever had. Definitely want to make a reservation here.
