Originating from Kolkata, this unique cuisine was invented when the Hakka people migrated to India from the Chinese province of Canton, bringing with them their culinary treasures. Incorporating traditional Chinese cooking techniques with the spices of India to create something both new yet familiar, Indo Chinese is now an integral part of Indian cuisine.

Playfully named Fatt Pundit it’s a combination of the common Chinese surname ‘Fatt’ with the Indian word ‘Pundit’ (a scholar).

Absolutely delicious!

The lollipop chicken was amazing. We had to order another portion! Cruncy, tasty and slightly spicy!

The lamb chops were gorgeous. Super tender. Super tasty. Really enjoyed them.

The manchurian chicken was nice. Will try the rib eye dish next time!

The bread was delicious.

The watermelon juice was brilliant but needed ice!

Great food.

Service could have been better hence the 4 star. We did not feel welcomed when we entered.

The chef bringing out the food was however fantastic!

Food was good however the experience felt so rushed.
So all six dishes were out in ten minutes and staff kept clearing table at earliest opportunity.
Not allowed time to fully enjoy the experience.
Staff tending to address my male component opposed to me(female).
As a dining experience, I wouldn’t recommend.

Tiny servings and slow service, too expensive for a below average quality meal

12.5% service added to an already overpriced meal

Amazing food, very tasty and felt of a home made quality. Good value for money, especially given the area. Portions on the smaller side so make sure you order enough. Would deffo recommend!

Fantastic experience! We shared 5 dishes - the flavours were unique and everything was delicious. We sat at the counter and chatted with the owners - great story of bringing a unique flavour and type of cuisine to the city. Lovely people. We'll be back!

I would absolutely recommend the food. The lamb chops in particular. The service let it down especially being offered still or sparkling water five times while not being brought the drinks we ordered. May go back once the waiting staff have settled in.

When did Fatt Pundit ever deserve 2 star let alone 4 or 5 star reviews? The food, service and atmosphere were shambolic at best and deplorable at worst.

I booked there for my 60th birthday lunch with my son after a mention (no review) by Fay Maschler, the Evening Standard's food critic.

Our booking was for 1.45pm last Saturday. There were only 2 diners inside, and the Berwick Street building looked shabby.

However, on the back of the online rave reviews (!!??) we decided to enter.

We ordered: Lollypop chicken, beef and chicken momos for starters. Bream curry with fried rice and crab for our main courses.

The Lollipop Chicken was lovely but the momos had a peculiar medicinal /fragrant taste to them. I could not eat them so my son ate them all to be polite.

Along with the starters came the fried rice which should have obviously been served with the bream curry. I sent it back for later- it went up and down the dumbwaiter lift between the seating area and kitchen several times.

The restaurant became busier - but no more than 15 or 16 by the time our main courses arrived.

The waiting staff didn't have a clue which table ordered what,( I sat opposite dumbwaiter) and they looked confused when consulting the orders, and still the fried rice kept appearing on our table without the fish curry!

Bream Curry sickly sweet, and crab was mushy and tasteless. Fried rice nondescript. Food lukewarm.

We couldn't wait to leave.

The portions were very small, and along with a mediocre Mojito, the price of an extremely sub-standard lunch was £60 including 12½% service.

I would have complained bitterly about every aspect of our experience, and not paid the service charge, but my son is easily embarrassed and would have been angry if I had "caused a scene", especially on such an occasion.

As soon as we got home I cooked an English fry up. A fraction of the cost of our lunch at Fatt Pundit and infinitesimally more tasty.

On the plus side ....the loos were clean!

Food was amazing and so was the service, can’t wait to go back.

There was one really off putting aspect though - the waiters/waitresses don’t get any of the tips, it all goes to management, so we took the service off and tipped cash.

This is a fun place with very good and innovative food. I like spice and they delivered! The crispy okra was one of the best veg dishes I have had. The cocktails are something different and I chose to give the bartender a freehand. It was a good decision. Service very friendly and personal. I will return

Good food. Good setting. A little disappointed with the lack of professionalism of waiters. Whilst helpful, they lacked the etiquette one would expect at a restaurant which is not considered cheap.

Good food, good service. It would be good to indicate expected wait times for different food items as they all come at different times and not sure in what order.

My second time here and the food was as good as it was the first time. The food is excellent - particularly recommend the shredded chilly venison and crackling spinach which are absolutely delicious. The staff are really friendly and helpful. Only slight negative is the layout of the tables - it's all a bit cramped and the corridor style of the restaurant doesn't make it very comfortable.

Overall, we had a good experience at Fatt Pundit but we are not sure we'll return for the following reasons:
1. Service was friendly and attentive, but one dish took nearly 2 hours to arrive and no explanation was ever given as to why. We had to ask about it multiple times.
2. Hakka cuisine is fantastic - but it's not meant to be served small plate style. In traditional Hakka cuisine, dishes are mixed together and with rice so you can customise the taste profile you desire. However, when serving in small plates, dishes have to be toned down and balanced so that each has some balance of salty, sweet, spicy, sour, bitter and bright. We found the dishes at Fatt Pundit to be often too single-note and too strong tasting when not mixed with rice (I am a Malaysian Chinese so am very familiar with this style of cuisine).
3. The price is rather high for the small portions and quality.

Food was lovely, service was fair and friendly; they get knocked down a star because the ambience is cramped and noisy upstairs and they do not take AmEx.

I cannot recommend Fatt Punditt highly enough. The food was excellent and the staff were just so lovely. Personal favourites were the Kid Dumplings, Chicken wings and the Crackling Spinach but I would happily have ordered the whole menu. We will definitely be returning soon.

We ordered all the veggie dishes and the veggie momos. All were delicious except for one veggie dish - the mixed fried vegetables - which were a bit stodgy and you couldn't tell what the vegetables were. But apart from that the food was delicious, and good options for vegetarians.

Really authentic fusion of Indo-Chinese food with delicious flavours. The venison pau was particularly tasty with great spice and balance of flavours. It’s only been open for three weeks so the service is a little slow and hectic but am sure it’ll settle down soon.

I had an amazing experience at Fatt pundit. Firstly they managed find me a table even though it wasn’t showing available online. The food tasted amazing, we ordered quite a few different types of dishes and each one was full of flavour and not overpowering at all. The lamb chop was the winner of all. Not only the food even the mocktails they do is very interesting and creative. Apart from amazing food we received a very warm hospitality from them and the entire team of staff were so humble. I would definitely visit again and already recommended to friends and family.
