Everything was pretty fantastic, but after hearing incredible things about the food the reality didn't always stack up. The sides were amazing, and most of the meat was great, but both the pulled pork and pork ribs were a bit flavourless... I didn't feel like I was eating something that was slow cooked and smoked for 12 hours, and there was only a basic dry rub on the ribs. As I said, the food was mostly amazing, but I had been expecting big things from the pork, so I couldn't help but feel a little disappointed.
Pork Ribs flavour and tenderness was excellent however they were pretty cold.
Side of Pickles very disappointing.
Fries great. Service slow and disappointing.
Overall I would not recommend or return
We did the set menu option. There was so much food it was amazing. The meat was perfectly cooked and the sides were inspirational. My guest had not had BBQ before and he's now a convert. You beauty!!
Really nice atmosphere and fantastic food made this a winner.
Meat was cold when served to our table. Also Boston beans were lacking flavour I have had better.
Fantastic service, food was served up hot & quickly. Comfortable seating, fantastic Vegan alternatives available. Both my friend and myself had a great time. Has most likely left a lasting impression for my friend visiting from Sydney. Really enjoyed the Melbourne Moonshine options.
Texan Beef sausages were average and brisket was good but have had a lot better.
Amazing food, staff and venue! Will be back for sure!
Was a great date night
Really delicious! The brisket, sweet habenero chicken and cornbread with Jalapeno butter was my favourite! 🙏
Great food if American BBQ is what you are wanting - it is by no means Fancy but tasty nonetheless.
The staff are attentive and pleasant
The decor is pleasing
The dining room can get noisy and there is little privacy
Service was fantastic. Our waitress was so happy to help us and ensured we enjoyed our experience. We were really impressed with the food and how affordable was. Great drinks. Overall A+ experience
Fancy Hanks boasts high quality 'dude food'. We booked a group table for a work lunch. The service was great and we were looked after in a friendly an efficient manner. I had the brisket plate, which included a 150gram beef briskett - quite fatty but absolutely delicious - served with smokey baked beans and a house made slaw. It was uper tasty. Others were happy ordering the pulled pork sandwich (AKA burger on a brioche bun) and mac n' cheese. It was noisy and a bit hard to yell to the other end of the table ...but, lively and fun. I recommend for smallish groups or larger groups if you're happy to move around the table (and avoid only talking to the person either side)
A little disappointing to be honest. Had been looking for a place to get good American style ribs. Unfortunately it doesn't seem the chef has been to America. They had ran out of beef ribs at 7pm on a Sunday, the pork ribs were hard to taste, they seemed to have been smothered in far too much cayenne or chili powder. Beef brisket was dry, even by smoked standards. The BBQ fries and beet salad are tasty, definitely worth having when you go. However I'm not sure what the point of putting the dipping sauce for the fried cauliflower at the bottom of the bowl is - you have to eat 3/4 of them before you can dip anything in the sauce.
The service staff could have been a little more attentive as well. There were no check-ins to see if we were satisfied, or if we needed new drinks.
Overall the place has potential, but we failed to see it during our visit.
We attended Fancy Hanks on Sunday evening for my sons 13th birthday (which was noted when asked during the booking process but no reference to it during our dinner - why bother asking?).
I have been here several times, and have been fortunate enough to have BBQ throughout most of the US, and the food on Sunday night was patchy at best, some of the entrees were outstanding, however the "main event" was a let down.
The ribs were dried out and not moist at all (and yes I know they use a dry rub) - they had obviously been sitting around for a very long time. The brisket was tasty but nearly cold. Thankfully the pulled pork was good. This especially got me upset when I had to pay $45 for 6 or 7 ribs - I don't mind paying but not for such poor quality ribs.
The one thing that kind of got me a bit worked up was having to pay $1 for a small side of ranch dressing. I get paying at a fast food restaurant for a bit of sauce or dressing, however we dropped nearly $200 and were in the restaurant for less than an hour. Just didn't really leave me with a good impression.
With other competition in the Melbourne market (Burn City, Le Bon Ton, etc.) Fancy Hank's won't be on our agenda again anytime soon
A great location in the city and older rustic charm in the building. It felt like a long time between ordering and receiving our food. We ordered the $50 pp feast which had a mixture of meats and sides. The meat was cold when it was served and quite small serve for two people as the main meal. The sides were yum and full of flavour. Overall the food was okay but not as good as what I was expecting.
Great place, Better Food. Jack is the man for service - it had been a month since I first went there and he remembered how I like my Gin & Tonic. When another bartender was about to serve me a G n T, and it wasn't right - Jack stepped in a took over without a word. That is service. Will always go back.
Got the chefs selection of meat for 4 people. Meat was fantastic, great taste and nice and tender. But for $50 expected a little more then 300 Grams per person.
Poor service, over priced food, dirty bathrooms and one corner was covered with staff belongings. Will not be going again.
Great service, food is good (although brisket can be more improved) and great ambience for group dinners
The brisket was heavenly, the pulled pork sweet and tender, and the chicken wings a taste sensation. The sides were also great, making for a terrific all-round meal.
Great food as always, but the staff were completely overwhelmed on Sunday at lunch time, which meant that our meats arrived well before our sides and our drinks took nearly 50 minutes from ordering to receiving. I'd still happily go back, though.
As usual Fancy Hanks do a great brisket for lunch. I had the brisket plate and my friend the brisket sandwich. Both were excellent!
Was told by the staff that the amount of food was enough to feed 8 of us.
Ordered 1 full rack of Lamb ribs, 1 full rack of pork ribs, 6 people set menu
fried cauliflower side, fries side, sausage and mac n cheese.
Not sure if the staff was trying to make us over order to get the most out of us, we ended up having half a kilo of meat left on the table.
The service was pretty poor too. It took ages to get a staff to attend to us. The food took ages to come out as well. Lamb ribs were too fatty that you get sick of it after 2 ribs. Link sausage was hard as rock. the only highlight is the beef brisket, cornbread, and fries.
We waited quite a while for the food to arrive though the restaurant was less than half full, and the ribs were room temperature to cold in most spots, lukewarm at best. They were tasty, but for $90 and the time taken to arrive, one would hope they would also be hot. Fortunately the sides were good, as was the cherry cola.
Food is always amazing. First time trying the ribs, so good.
Best brisket I’ve ever had. Must have if you eat here.
Great dishes to suit a wide range of tastes. GF, diabetic... not a problem with the friendly staff. Great place to take visitors to Melbourne. Going back soon.
Good food nothing to say about that but 100$ for a pork ribs rack, I believe it's a little bit over. Good experience overall but once every 6 months :-)
We were sold on the premium $50 steak that they had as a special. Told that the meat would melt in our mouths, that it was just that brilliant. Except it wasn't. It was stone cold with stodgy fat on the sides. It was awful. The only thing that melted was our wallet. The staff tried their best, put it in the warmer and warmed up the top while the middle was still cold... they did offer us our first round of drinks for free. But we still paid $50 for a cold steak.
It was such a dampener to a great night. We wouldn't return or recommend.
The waiter was more interested in turning over the table than service to the diners. We were reminded again and again that the table needed to be vacated by 8pm at 6.30!! Food was good but way overpriced.
Great food. A bit pricey compared to other restaurants with a similar menu. But overall good experience. Wasnt to happy with the wine though (Tommy Ruff), glad the staff changed the bottle for us.
Excellent. Thanx for a great evening. Great friends, great food, great venue
We ordered the brisket, the pulled pork, corn bread and fries. Whilst they tasted good they were nothing to get excited about and certainly not value for money. The service was good and our drinks were cold. I don't think we will go back.......
The food was ok , but for $50 a head it was overpriced and all over in about half an hour
Probably the best smoked meat in Melbourne. Brisket is out of this world. Ribs were fantastic also. Ive been a fan for many years since they were up at Vic Market. The CBD one is far more up market, but food delicious!
Such a great place! Good was good and service was awesome.
Fancy Hanks is American BBQ done right! I've been there a few times and it's always consistently good. Plenty of meat as you'd expect, but for me it's always the brisket that's the winner. This time I had a brisket sandwich at lunchtime and it was deeeeelicious! Plus a cheaper option if you're on a budget.
Had the 'feed me' menu. $55 a head for a serve of brisket and pulled pork and a sausage with a few sides is a bit steep. Food was tasty! but expensive...
Great BBQ but $58 for a beef shorty seems a bit steep. Will go back though
