At Fancy Hank's we serve American-style, slow cooked BBQ, using the finest quality free range meats, cooked using our custom-built, 2-tonne smoker. Brisket, ribs and pulled-pork sit alongside the traditional sides as well as a number of unique dishes. We use traditional Southern cooking techniques and combine these with local produce to put our uniquely Australian spin on this regional American cuisine.

We paid AUD35 each for a banquet set menu. We expected to be served individually. Not in 2 platters for 9 people. It was disappointing to be served two pieces of Pumpkin toast to be shared between 9 people.
Overall the food was good.

Great service, though over priced for amount you get. Got 4 things thinking they’d be big serves from what menu said and paid a ridiculous amount for them to then be disappointing and small. Ended up needing to go get dessert elsewhere after because still hungry. Good service but unsure if I would go back!

All round on the money - although some dishes were a little overpriced for what was on the plate (brisket). Burnt ends were nice but mostly beetroot rather than beef.
Fave was the pork chop - recommended by our lovely server - and delicious.
Would return!

I will admit my bias straight up: I dig American Food and these girls and guys do it great. The fact that their lunch menu is some really well priced sandwich action just adds to my enjoyment.
Definitely one of the better lunch places in Melbourne!

Above average food for sure, style and flavor took me back to the States, the let down of the evening was the burnt ends; two small squares of meat and one of pure fat does not a 'burnt ends' make (especially not for $16), considering the slab of 14hr brisket was only $29 and 10 times the amount of meat. Mac & cheese was the bomb! Lamb ribs a little on the dryer side, though flavored wonderfully. Spiced pumpkin pudding small but delish!

Staff was so incredibly rude, our female waitress should work in a bazaar. She was so pushy rattling down the menu, asking several times if we want to order NOW? It wasn’t busy and we’re not the slowest, but please let your guests sit down and have a look at the menu. We’re going out to have a good time.

The food was super disappointing- compared to Blue Bonnet. Cold, tasteless, overpriced for the quality. My partner’s meat was 1/4 a big piece of fat crust.

We decided not to order dessert, which was offered to us in the same fast rattling, not understandable way. After we denied, one last push for “Coffee? ANYTHING? You can pay then.” Lucky us!

Our bill was wrong, when we pointed it out, that some items were charged double the male waiter seemed to be rather annoyed to have to make an effort.

Sorry, but we definitely are not coming back.

Our waiter was very rude the whole night, unfortunately. we were asking for recommendations and he basically just ignored us. We asked how many dishes we should get and it was just palmed off like well 'i dont know how much do you want, I dont know...why dont you decide how hungry you are'?? I Just think maybe pretending to have been in a good mood would have been nice.
He would make fun of certain peoples drink choices. I was really surprised.

Great food and service. The venue is also awesome and very American-bar themed. There is also a rooftop upstairs if you feel like having some drinks before or after dinner. The lamb ribs and biscuits need to be something you or someone on your table orders.

A good choice if your like a brisk atmosphere and very American food. Service was good although the staring dishes (ribs) were eaten off the menu by 2015 on Friday evening!

coming back with family and friends for sure.
The team here were amazing and friendly, really accommodating for my boyfriends birthday. The food was also astounding - the brisket just MELTS in your mouth, is so tender and +++ recommend the black pepper biscuit tasted amazing with the meat plates too!
Very keen to try more on the menu and recommend this place to all!

Make sure you go her hungry to get through the mountain of food. Service is great but it doesn’t have the same family friendly atmosphere as the old establishment across from the Vic markets.

the brisket was phenomenal. the ribs however are definitely not the best. very overpriced for what they are. membrane was still attached and tough and the meat was very tough! but the brisket!!!!! the brisket was genius and the coleslaw!!!!

Very pleasant and courteous staff greeted us and made recommendations as to the amount and size of food to order. He was spot on with size. The only downside was the outside street light that shone straight into my eyes when I came on, perhaps some shading on the window would be good

Ribs were well cooked but lacked intensity, the chicken wings had more flavour. We felt some of the serving sizes were misrepresented and staff could have more attentive.

Brisket was amazing, still thinking about it 2 days later! Standard fair of Mac n cheese and corn bread were great, the jalopeno cream cheese was beautiful. The pork ribs were a big let down, great flavour but we’re a bit tough and a touch dry. $50 for half a rack was a joke, if the rest wasn’t so good I would have made a fuss at bill time.
Service was exceptional, our food was out in under 15mins from ordering.
We will go back again in the future.

The food was great and tasty. The only disappointment was the $60 rack of ribs- very tasty but very expensive and very little meat on the bones. Would come back but would not order the ribs again.

My wife and I went to Fancy Hank's between halves of a two-part show at the Princess Theatre. The location is great if you are in the theatre district! Being form the US and having traveled extensively throughout the country, we know BBQ quite well. Fancy Hank's isn't really authentic American BBQ, but that is not meant as a criticism -- the food is excellent top to bottom.

First, the ribs: they were cooked perfectly, with a very nice sauce. The menu said it was an "Alabama BBG sauce" and that was part of it, but then there was a drizzle of something else that added another layer of flavor. So like I said, I wouldn't call it authentic, but more of a Melbourne twist and slightly more upscale version of the original.

Second, I would be remiss if I did not mention that AMAZING biscuits. You simply must order the black pepper biscuit with maple butter. These are the best biscuits I have ever had -- just the right crumb and crust on the outside, beautiful texture on the inside with a very nice maple butter that is just right int terms of sweetness.

Add in the good service and fine drinks, and this made for a perfect stop for us between shows. I would definitely put this on my pre-theatre stop next time I'm in Melbourne.

It used to be my favourite place to eat whenever I came to Melbourne but it has gone so downhill. This will be the last time I will eat here.

We were given a really bad table in the lower corner even though we had booked in advance. It was right next to the where the bartender kept banging plates after washing especially as the table was lower and the plates were ear level. Made the experience poor.

Solid barbecue food with interesting starters in a great venue. We came towards the end of the evening and a few of our dishes came to the table luke warm, when we pointed this out they happily replaced them with piping hot dishes and even took 20% off our bill for the inconvenience.

Out of the 8 people on our table, four of us traveled from Gippsland, and would do it again. We really enjoyed the food, the service was friendly, the room is full of nostalgia, the bar looked fabulous and though our table was on the outside it was still loud. That’s not enough to stop us coming back. We definitely will see you in the future. Thank you all round.

We were having a wonderful meal while celebrating a family birthday. This all changed when we were asked to clear the table as they needed it. We were eating desert. How rude!

Service was poor, had to ask for drinks 3 plus times still had to wait for 20 minutes to get them. Brisket was poor two slices of thin beef and a bread bun and some red onions for $29. Waited a long time for food, no communication of times no apology for wait. Asked at the end if it was busy and they answered it was steady - so no real reason for little to no service and long waits. Tables either side of ours the same experience. No offer to fix anything so ensured that three full tables of people will not return again. Don’t waste your money, expensive and even removing the bad service the food is not worth the price

I would say the service was poor, but because we didn't receive any it's hard to tell. 2 hours to get our food, at no point did any of the wait staff come over and knowledge us. The only reason we were able to order (1/2 hours after sitting down) was because we chased down a member of staff. Some of the lowlights:
- we weren't offers drinks and had to chase down someone else to bring us drinks. We were never offered anything else
- no staff member came close to our table in the 2 hours we were there without us actively getting out of seats to call them over
- we weren't brought cutlery with our food when it eventually came
- there was noone on the pass all evening. Food was being left for long periods sitting there. There was no ownership of sections, no leaders, no one knew what there role was during service
- all employees looked disinterested. When our plates were finally cleared away after us calling someone over AGAIN and us piling the plates to be gathered away, the server didn't say a word. Not a word. He just stared into the distance while very slowly clearing up the plates we had gathered
- I had to ask twice for the bill. By this point we were just desperate to leave but we couldn't even do that!
- two items we ordered never arrived
- the restaurant was relatively busy but there were a number of vacant tables. There was no reason the service should have been this bad.
- when we finally gave some feedback when we were paying, the server just stared blankly and said 'thank you for your feedback'. Nothing else. No offer of recompense, no suggestions, just a blank acknowledgement that the service was poor
- a couple next to us waited over 1.5 hours for their food. They also complained at the end and got the exact same ' thank you for your feedback' mantra.
- there was no sense of urgency from anyone in the restaurant. Clearly, the training and leadership is non-existent. How this place is still trading in such a vibrant culinary scene is beyond me.

We went to Fancy Hanks on a Sunday night and whilst the restaurant was quiet, the service, particularly for drinks was very slow.

The food was good, not as great as on previous occasions, seems the recipes may have changed for some favourites such as the coleslaw and mac n cheese, however we did still enjoy our orders and as always there was way too much for us to finish.

A good standby to catch up with friends, but seems to have slipped a little.

A little surprised at a place where their catch cry is the protein & it being bbq & their was no 1/2 chicken left when we ordered ..
I do commend the staff & the management for the compensation we received without even requesting anything - hsts off.
The food was great no doubt.

ONE OF THE MOST DISAPPOINTING EVENINGS MY WIFE AND I HAVE EXPERIENCED. MANAGER DIDN'T EVEN MAKE THE TIME TO CONVEY WITH US. FOOD WAS SALTY COLD OVER MARINATED. WE WERE BOTH FEELING UNWELL YESTERDAY. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER. ONLY PUT A 500GM RACK ASIDE FOR BOTH OF US AFTER ADVISING BOTH IN SPECIAL ORDER CONDITIONS THROUGH YOUR BOOKING AS WELL AS RING THE VENUE ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON . JUST AS WELL CAUSE THE FOOD WAS DISGUSTING. WELL TELL ALL MY FRIEND'S AND FAMILY AND SOCIAL MEDIA NOT TO VISIT.
