Whether you dine with us in our main dining room or upstairs in what was once our family's home, we warmly welcome you. If you're looking for that special restaurant where you can take a a breath from the fast lane and go back to a time when restaurants were not part of a chain and the owner became a friend, the food was always great, and as my grandmother said, "You feel better for coming"....then you've found the right spot. We combine the classic Italian Menu and new creative dishes, with full attention to both. If you enjoy fine wine, you've found a new home. Our cellar contains well over 3,500 choices dating from the late 1800's.
Clearly, this is our neighborhood gem - everything perfect: service, food, ambience, price/value. One of the last of the old time owner operator restaurants ... with the owner functioning as everyone’s friend.
There is no warmer, more comfortable, congenial top drawer restaurant on the north shore.
I've been going to Del Rio for years. It doesn't get any better!
The waitress we had was amazing, she knew the menu very well and made great suggestions. My wife and I love our food, definitely coming back.
By far my favorite Italian restaurant. The service is impeccable and the food is superb!!! I ordered an extra serving of tortellacis to bring home! Absolutely the best in Highwood!!!
Classic, old school Italian that never disappoints.
Del Rio's was the perfect place for first Valentine's Day in a new relationship. Upstairs was specifically the perfect place! It was quiet, with tables set apart, and a home-like ambiance not found elsewhere. Food was good, served simply, as always, with little bother from the waitress, who was discreet and not always interrupting.
warm inviting and always a great dinner from whichever choice you make from the menu
Great food in a traditional dinning environment; I grew up in an Italian household and this definitely takes me home. Friendly and relaxing service... well done team Del Rio. We can't wait to go back!
I have been coming to Del Rio for over 40 years and have never been disappointed. Still one of my very favorite places. Our waitress was wonderful too!!
Made reservation for anniversary dinner. They never mentioned it at all. Not too many smiles from the guy who led us to our table or wait person. Almost as if we were doing them a favor. Food was tasty but the
“friendly” touch was completely missing. 1-31-20
Good, traditional Italian food, great service, conversation friendly. Del Rio has been in existence for over 100 years. It must be doing something right.
Excellent! Food as amazingly good, and service was outstanding!
Del Rio is a great Italian restaurant and if you like red wine make sure you ask for the IPad wine list. They have about 30,000 bottles with about 12,000 at the restaurant. Amazing list. We had a 1999 cab from Margaret River in Australia. Phenomenal value. Best list in Chicago bar none
lasagna and Cannoli are so good!
Too much sauce. Eggplant had too many seeds and too much breading. Sauce too acidic. Pasta placed on plate with water on bottom.
Great food, service, vibe, hospitality. Best Italian cuisine north of Taylor street. A Highwood legend.
Wonderful service as well!
Del Rio never disappoints! The food, service and warm welcome from the owner all add up to a pleasant and delicious evening.
Excellent in every way !
I would recommend this restaurant to everyone. Ambiance was perfect (Christmas lights and decorations really made the place feel like home). The owner and his wife greeted and chatted with us while there which always is such a welcoming touch. Our server was wonderful and the food was superb. It was a perfect spot all the way around and we cannot wait to come back.
Del Rio is a family favorite! The food is very good. The only gnocchi better than Nona's! The tortellini in broth is old school awesome! Great for dinners for two, parties of 7 or 14. Our family always leaves nourished in body and spirit!
A step back in time.
An old school restaurant specializing in warm, attentive service. The menu offers a mix of Italian specialties, and we particularly enjoyed the halibut and spaghetti al forno. The ambiance is retro and comfortable, giving the feel of a large living room full of family. My husband and I enjoyed our date night and look forward to returning.
Great meal. Service excellent. Owners fun.
Great old school Italian restaurant. Good martini, good pasta, great sauce! nuf said!
Absolutely wonderful meal - everything we ordered was outstanding. We haven’t been in years and went there after the Botanic Garden Lightscape with our sons. The entire experience did not disappoint - from Connie and Bill’s warm welcome to Pat’s excellent service and recommendations. It was a perfect evening and we loved the egg nog cinnamon gelato!
This was my second time being at Del Rio. My first experience was two years ago and really good. I had a small dinner with friends on the first floor. I remember the food being amazing. Our dinner last night was not that great. The gnocchi was very cold. Salad was just lettuce. Bread was not warm. Chicken parmigiana wasn’t crusted...basically chicken breast with sauce. The rigatoni was nothing special at all. We sat on the second floor and our waitress and the bartender could hear every word we spoke to each other. I was so excited to take my husband because I loved it so much a few years ago. His meal was super oily. The atmosphere upstairs does not compare to downstairs. We have 2 little babies and we’re excited abt a dinner out but it was not great. Everyone that walked in the upstairs had the same reaction as us...”are we in the right place?” That upstairs needs some work. I felt like I was sitting in my parents basement.
Del Rio is just a great place. The food is excellent and you feel as though you are welcome. Every time I have visited the owner has come by the table to make sure we are happy. The noise level is such that you don't have to shout at one another which I appreciate.
Everybody had a wonderful experience.
Dennis was awesome as usual. Great food and unbelievable ambiance. Hidden gem in Highwood
Dinner with some friends was a lovely experience. My Veal Del Rio was excellent although way more that I could eat and my wife’s chicken was good and also very large. The two little hiccups were that we were upstairs and it was very cold. They gave two of us the other’s salad and we had started before we realized it. All in all a pleasant experience.
Food was good but too few servers left us sitting a long time before we ordered. Our drinks arrived long after we ordered them. It made the dining experience not a good one.
I am sad to say that a very special anniversary was tainted by bad service cold food and when it was returned the Gnocchi had no texture and the meat sauce tasted plastic. Wouldn’t recommend going there on an Opera evening. Maybe too many people to maintain expected level of service and quality.
Been going to Del Rio’s for 47 yrs. Need I say more. Bill the owner is always there & greets his guests as family!
amazing food EVERYTIME we come! Everyone is so nice there and attentive. I love love love this restaurant.
Del Rio never disappoints. We have dined there for over thirty-five years. The menu has expanded, but the quality remains. Intimate dinning room with friendly staff, good food, and a generous pour.
I love Del Rio, service food ambiance all perfect!!! Love it.....
We have enjoyed dining at Del Rio several times this past year. Once again the dinner experience was special. Service was attentive and friendly without being intrusive. The ambiance is old school comfortable. As usual we were warmly greeted and seated quickly to our reserved table. The bartender knows his business and the wine list is approachable.. the food met its usual high standard. We started with the Charcuterie which is more generous than what we usually find. My wife ordered the Branzino with dinner salad. I mention the house salad because it is an example of the kitchen’s attention to detail. It is a light fresh mixed salad with a blue cheese crumble and balsamic vinaigrette that is crisp and refreshing. The Branzino was excellent. Cooked perfectly with EVOO, herbs and lemon. My daughter thought the salmon special was terrific. I ordered the Veal Del Rio, thin pounded scallopini’s of veal, lightly brewed and sautéd just enough. It is so easy to over cook veal that thin but the kitchen avoids that problem. It is served with a luscious vermouth sauce. I chose to pair it with a side of gnocchi which rivals that of my own Italian family. I must also extoll the wonderful tortellini soup. My family would call it cappelletti. Little pasta bonnets filled with a minced pork and veal mixture served in a clear chicken broth. I have never seen these in a restaurant before. Only at special family dinners. We will be returning to enjoy more terrific dining at Del Rio.
Solid Italian fare. Old school family restaurant with classic bar and legit old time bartender.
There are many Italian restaurants out there. Some new, some around for a while. Some only a single site, others with many sites. But if you want REAL ITALIAN cooking, then you have to eat here. Been around for years...that is for a reason!
It honestly does not get any better. Incredible Eggplant Parm BTW. The owners work very hard to keep it so authentic.
Wonderful food and great service from Rita!!!
