David's Restaurant, in Prahran, crafts delectable contemporary Shanghai-style Chinese cuisine with knowhow and passion in its friendly and charming eatery. The Shanghai pan-fried spring onion pancakes and the tender prawn and chopped chive dumplings make for superb starters. Some of David's Restaurant's specialty larger dishes include the spicy white cut chicken with peanuts and sesame in a chili sauce, the chunky barramundi fillets in spicy black bean paste with fried potatoes and the crispy fried iron Buddha beef served atop fragrant tea leaves, all of which are delicately seasoned. Noodle and rice dishes, such as the fat Shanghai noodles with pork and vinegar and Auntie's fried rice with sausage and egg, are other diner favorites. The white chocolate dumplings with praline is a perfect dessert.
David's Restaurant also has a full gluten-free menu, as well as being one of the best Yum Cha destinations in Melbourne.
As always a wonderful experience ... a great reliable quality restaurant that always over delivers in all areas.
Awesome yum cha! Generous portions and engaging service. Awesome Sunday lunch venue!
We went for yum cha. Service was fantastic and food was great. Would definitely go again.
Went for a business lunch with 6 people. As it's a quiet time of the year we were blessed with the normally busy atmosphere being very low key; relaxed and quiet. Christine came and offered to just create a lovely lunch for us without choosing from the menu. The food was unbelievable. It was also fun not knowing what was coming - wish more restaurants would do this so well. Lovely lovely lunch and will definitely be back again and again.
The restaurant is beautifull6 appointed and has a relaxed beach feel to it. The food was delicious. It surpassed my expectations. We ordered a little too much but I couldn’t stop eating. The Duck salad was especially good and the portion sizes are very generous. I would very much recommend David’s. I’m looking forward going to their Yum Cha sessions and taking lots of friends!
Excellent attention to detail throughout. Charming people who genuinely care about their business. Could not have asked for a better NYE.
Went there on New Years Eve and the tables were all huddled together, my partner and I were seated opposite each other and felt like we couldn't have a private conversation because the people seated next to us on both sides were able to hear. Not sure if the seating arrangement is as cramped on non-festive days. Other than that, everything was great - food, service etc
Super friendly staffs. We were late and they were so nice to let us in and even offered us extra food to make sure we were full. So generous and so nice. Entire food was amazing. We are definitely coming back for more of their food - both on menu and their Yum Cha !!
Great food, consistent service although drinks were pretty slow.
Great! First time visit but definitely not the last. Food was fantastic for the all you can eat. Didn't get to try every of the 30 dishes..so much food. Work staff very friendly.
Great service and ambience. Very nice people. Food good not great
David's is probably our family's favourite restaurant. Fabulous authentic Chinese - mostly Shanghainese - cuisine, a wonderful vibe and ambience, attentive and genuine staff. We visit probably every month. The Lion Dance on CNY is a lovely touch - like being in Hong Kong. This is a place where we feel genuinely welcome.
Yam Cha is great, atmosphere enjoyable, service friendly
Beautiful fresh food, great ambience and some of the best service I’ve had in Melbourne. The staff were friendly, attentive, informed - the true definition of hospitality. This was my first time here and I can see why it has maintained its reputation for 20 years. Highly recommended. The Yum Cha was great. Nice variety of dishes and it didn’t stop coming. You can tell the food was fresh.
Great place for yum cha.
Went to there on the weekend for their unlimited yum cha. Totally worth it. Food is very fresh and hot. Glad I can get decent Chinese food other than in the CBD.
Great service, thank you to all the staff for making a great dining experience.
Great restaurant, however acoustics are terrible and we couldn’t talk across a 4 person table without yelling. Please look into fixing this.
Excellent Yum Cha, staff are delightful and very attentive. Give yourself a treat and enjoy Sunday brunch
Had the tasting menu, we got plenty of food - all of which were very tasty! Often things I wouldn't order on the menu so it was good to try a lot of different things. Overall, great food, great service, would definitely recommend!
If you prefer style over substance, and your idea of authentic Chinese cuisine is one consumed with forks and sweet chilli sauce, this will most likely be your kind of venue.
A sad comment on beating an ancient, vibrant, textural and dynamic cuisine into submission for the sake of making a bland audience feel adventurous and exotic, David's is a modern Chinese eatery designed for food bloggers and instagrammers who (only) eat with their eyes, and Australians who think 'street food' is the name of the bar menu at Chin Chin.
The weekend yum cha offering is a $40pp affair which seems reasonable, but when you break it down, sits significantly higher than your average Chinatown dim sum run. But we’re in Prahan, so, overheads, fit out, weekend staff rates and such.
Snacks start with a single ramekin around the size of a drink coaster, of bland sesame noodles, to be shared between three fully grown humans, before moving onto all things fried, unseasoned and unbalanced. Dumplings are joyless, texturally void and indiscernibly homogenous, while the Beijing duck pancakes arrived the size of small burritos; overly stuffed with dry duck with its once succulent pancake edges, desiccated from sitting beneath the hot lamps on the pass for too long.
Perhaps the only recognisable part of this yum cha experience is the terrible service and the unimaginative wine list. You could forgive David’s for being what it is because it caters to the audience within its surrounds if it at least executed its menu with balance, conception and flavour, but alas. Once upon a time, I’m sure David’s had an offering worthy of calling Chinese, but when food is sanitised beyond recognition, who does this actually serve?
Christine and her team are terrific, best yum cha place in Melbourne. Look forward to returning soon.
So overpriced. $450 for 3 people for a mid week dinner? Won’t be going back.
Great food, service and atmosphere. Excellent for a family dinner or catch up with friends.
Love this place. There is the most lovely lady that always greats us as if we are friends and remembers our regular order. Best service and amazing food. David’s is our go to when we go out for dinner.
AMAZING! We had the best 'all-you-can-eat' yum cha experience on Saturday. I highly recommend it! The service and food were excellent.
Stunning food and such nice service, we had a really enjoyable night - thank you!!! 😊
Overall atmosphere at David's is lovely and the Service is attentive and good. A few things I noticed, the dumplings were not warm enough... the chilli pork dumplings were almost cold (and had a weird satay style sauce which felt a bit heavy/overshadowed the dumplings) and the rice wrapper with crab and asparagus was the same; luke-warm. The quality of the food is good overall but the Lamb ribs were soooo oily. They were over sweet and swimming in oil with nothing fresh on the plate to give relief..ie there were a few bits of salad but they were wilted and drowning in oil too obviously under the lamb ribs. The first 4 entrees were light and fresh and tasty and then that was a really heavy and disappointing way to end the meal. I basically ate one little rib and my dinner guest had to finish them off as I couldn't stomach them they were that clawing.
This is our neighbourhood Chinese restaurant. The food is always beautifully prepared and imaginative high quality cuisine. There are traditional Chinese dishes but also fusion. Service is friendly.
On this occasion we took advantage of the Locals Monday night special 2 courses and a glass of wine for $35 excellent value.
What an amazing place - the food was SENSATIONAL, the atmosphere fantastic. Friendly, happy service - David's cannot be faulted! You must go!
All of us were very disappointed with the restaurant. The food was not special at all and definitely wasn't worth for that high price. It was "All You Can Eat" but they were served by the waiters on the tray once only and there wasn't much variety. If you want to try the same one once more you have to order it. We didn't know that and was asked if they can start serving dessert while we were expecting different dishes to be served. The restaurant is nice and modern and their service was good but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, especially for that price.
Food is always delicious and the service is always outstanding.
Lack of food going around considering we booked in for an "all-you-can-eat". Had to consistently ask the waiters for more but besides that the service was really good
Quality food and service as usual! Unlimited Yum Cha Saturdays with BYO is a perfect combo!
Delicious food, attentive staff, romantic ambiance and a wonderfully refreshing Lychee Martini 🍸. Highly recommendable.
The food was great but I just had one complaint we found an eyelash hair in one of our food items. I understand that happens sometimes but the restaurant was just so busy that the waiters just shrugged it off.
They did everything well but this one incident was a bit disappointing.
Exceptional hospitality. The food is delicious which brings out the Shanghainese style.
Single (1 item) serves at the start and throughout the yum cha are tiny and amusing. Later our waiter announced that Chinese broccoli was about to be served signalling the end of the food before dessert. As we were still hungry we asked for double serves of the remaining 2 dishes. 1 of these was a barbecued beef which tasted strangely of Aussie smoked barbie and clashed with the oriental flavours of everything else. Dessert was a gluggy rice ball infused with chocolate sauce. Considering that we didn’t have alcohol or coffee $55 each was quite an expensive Sunday lunch.
Love David's. Best yum cha in Melbourne and great service. Best to book as weekends are busy.
Missed out on a few dishes so has to ask but staff were good to ensure we got them. Yum Cha consistency good, no more custard tarts (shame!). Desserts were OK.. Very noisy. But wouls. Go. Back for special occasion.
We regularly choose David's for special occasions as well as a great place to lunch with friends on the weekend.
We think their Yum Cha is the best to be found. Service is always great, the staff are charming and we always feel looked after.
A great varied selection of everybody's favourites ensures that everybody we introduce to David's Yum Cha enjoys the afternoon.
Just fabulous! Service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Yum Cha was exceptional with a continuous flow of delicious, unlimited offerings... not your standard trolley service. A real treat!!!
