David's Restaurant, in Prahran, crafts delectable contemporary Shanghai-style Chinese cuisine with knowhow and passion in its friendly and charming eatery. The Shanghai pan-fried spring onion pancakes and the tender prawn and chopped chive dumplings make for superb starters. Some of David's Restaurant's specialty larger dishes include the spicy white cut chicken with peanuts and sesame in a chili sauce, the chunky barramundi fillets in spicy black bean paste with fried potatoes and the crispy fried iron Buddha beef served atop fragrant tea leaves, all of which are delicately seasoned. Noodle and rice dishes, such as the fat Shanghai noodles with pork and vinegar and Auntie's fried rice with sausage and egg, are other diner favorites. The white chocolate dumplings with praline is a perfect dessert.
David's Restaurant also has a full gluten-free menu, as well as being one of the best Yum Cha destinations in Melbourne.
Just a few constructive comments to make any future experience better: If rice could come before all the dishes that would be great. And if a dessert could be incorporated into the banquets that would be wonderful. Everyone was gutted to not have a dessert included at the end.
I loved every bit of it EXCEPT - very very noisy. Very difficult to hear across the table. would definitely recommend to friends though
One of my favourite Asian restaurants in Melbourne & didn’t fail to deliver again. Dim Sum, Pork Belly & Wagyu Beef outstanding. Super friendly & helpful staff.
Great ambience and wonderful staff. Food choices were good. Chicken was well-cooked, bust slightly cold. Would definitely recommend to someone looking for a quiet and fancy date night.
Highly recommended restaurant!!
Always totally consistent and since change of menu a few months ago and only pity you reduced your range of dumplings ... it’s value is great for the quality and byo most nights is a winner.
There is no denying that the produce used in the food was fresh and of a high quality, the price point on the other hand was way over for the portions and dishes presented.
I had to rearrange my booking time a little before the scheduled time and they were very accommodating even as the restaurant was very full.
The food was very tasty and the service was very attentive. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal.
They bring you in with the $45 yum cha all you can eat price, but then the drinks are expensive. And they try to fill you up with cheap plates (noodles etc.) before bring out the plates you actually want - Peking Duck is left till 2 hours after you sit down.
sensational time perfect for any occasion food was spot on!
So happy that we were finally able to try the Yum Cha. Had friends visiting from interstate and they were absolutely blown away by the quality of food & service. Looking forward to returning!
It was a fun experince. I'd come back again with bigger group.
Delectable food. A little noisy but the food more than makes up for it,
Went there for the first time and we booked for yum cha. Excellent value for money. The staff were welcoming and informative explaining how it all worked which we appreciated and the food was delicious. Would prob skip the noodles n fried rice and load up the other yummy stuff. Def coming back!!!
A twist to the traditional yum cha experienced. Very refreshing.
Great lunch and such a beautiful building. The service was superb and food was very tasty and we rolled out of there after eating way too much.
Probably regret eating the filling bread and dishes at the start and not being able to eat all the meals and desert at the end...
Worth a visit
Great yum cha & service - highly recommended
Must book though
While the restaurant has a pleasant atmosphere, friendly waiters, and timely service, the food is probably the crux of why I wouldn’t recommend it. I was highly looking forward to the experience but found both myself and my partner disappointed, especially with all of the dumpling dishes. The skin of the dumplings were thick, doughy, and made me feel almost ill with how much they dominated the textural feeling inside the mouth. They ironically and genuinely had the worst xiaolongbao I’ve eaten in YEARS and couldn’t even keep the standard up to par with the cheapest dumpling institutions I’ve been to. I was also scandalised to know that basic Chinese tea wasn’t included in the package when the literal meaning of yum cha is to drink to. If you want a non-authentic experience that has some level of aesthetic appeal but hits zero on the palate, go right ahead.
enjoyed the occasion look forward to returning soon
The food was amazing, the staff were great and it felt like a nice change compared to a regular yum cha restaurant with carts. Great food - will definitely be back!
We’ve been to David’s before and loved it, so wanted to try their famous weekend yum cha. So glad we did - it was fantastic. The place was packed and the atmosphere was great, cool 80’s tunes playing in the background. Service was excellent, and the food was sensational.... and it just kept on coming! We were absolutely full when we left. So good. Good quality food at a great price.
Loved my visit to David’s! The service in particular was fantastic!
Cannot fault our experience there :) Everything was wonderful, particularly the food and service!
Saturday yum cha was amazing. Some old favourites like soup dumplings and spring rolls, and some delightfully different dishes as well. Service was attentive and friendly. Will go back.
Menu has changed 😔
Food wasn’t up to standard .
Was our fav restaurant
Absolutely love this place and come here all the time for weekend yum cha! Food is amazing and never seems to stop coming
David’s was a very pleasant experience. The food was excellent. It is shanghainese cuisine which is different from the Cantonese cuisine of most Melbournian Chinese restaurants. It was beautifully cooked.
Outstanding food and outstanding value. Staff are friendly and courtesy.
Excellent food and service. Will return in the future.
Although it had been at least a few months since my last visit, I was recognised and welcomed as an old friend. The food was excellent as always, the wine list an enjoyable browse and the service impeccable.
Beautiful whitewashed restaurant, with excellent and friendly service. There is a satisfying wide choice of dishes and a good value wine list.
We loved the place the ambience was fantastic. We are definitely going back there soon! Wish the menu was more extensive and had the Shanghai stir fried noodles..
David’s is always a winner! A great way to spend a Saturday afternoon with friends.
Excellent Yum Cha! Service was tops and the food was both delicious and fresh
We loved the revamped interior design ... it's light and got a really good feel. We were there for a Wednesday lunch and it was very quiet , food was great and so was the service. Need to go back for yum Cha .
A good experience. Tasty food and excellent service. BYO as well.
This is a tricky one - the food is top quality and is genuinely made with care and attention, while the staff are very knowledgeable and very helpful.
The reason for the low score was due to the ‘rushed’ nature of the sitting.
- When seated, the waitress asked if we would like any sparkling water or tea for our table. While I answered yes, I wasn’t given a choice of which tea we’d prefer. At $10 per pot, the option would’ve been nice to choose.
- At $55 per head, with the 90min limit, it was a challenge to try and get the money’s worth while being careful not to overeat, which proved too difficult to balance. The focus on enjoying the food and socialising together was difficult due to fast pace of the service.
- The service quickly became about eating the food moreso than enjoying the company of each other and the atmosphere of the venue. The overall ‘experience’ lacked as a result of the fast pace.
- The menu had become a bit too predictable, with spring rolls and dumplings being the key items without much in between to break up the menu. While the calamari, rice and Chinese broccoli were welcome additions, they came very late in the menu, meaning the first half seemed too much the same.
What would change this rating would be to see the time limit increased, even by 30mins, so as to allow enough time to enjoy and digest the food, while also being able to enjoy each other’s company and the atmosphere of the venue.
Secondly, it would be nice to see more greens and ‘lighter’ items mid-menu to break up the routine of spring rolls and dumplings, as well as adding a more ‘refreshing’ element to the dish.
Make no mistake- the food is beautiful. The staff are amazing. The venue is very relaxed.
If a few tweaks were made to the pace of service and layout of the menu offer, my rating would greatly improve.
Thanks and regards,
Love Sunday yum cha at David's, such great value for money (although Mother's Day was a bit more expensive than usual) and a wide variety of delicious food.
So much fun. All the staff are so lovely and thoughtful. The food is sensational as always.
We love David's for a great value for money, classy yum cha!
