David Burke at Orange Lawn
The food was surprisingly average despite the creative and colorful presentation.
The food is fabulous starting with the popovers and ending with the banana cream pie!!! I'm a foodie and eat out quite a bit and this was right up there with some of the best. Bronzino, crispy chicken, veal and onion rings were all delicious. Highly recommended.
Limited menu, but everything is delicious. Service was impeccable.
We plan to return soon!
David Burke at Orange Lawn is a great addition to our town. The Orange Lawn tennis club is a beautiful setting for a nice dinner out, the drinks are delicious (especially the margarita) and the food is very good (although slightly over salted). Definitely worth a visit.
Wonderful restaurant. We will be back. Very attentive wait staff & food was delicious!!
Great addition to South Orange. We had a lovely dinner. We will definitely come back.
I liked the menu a lot, but the execution could be improved.
We were excited about the steak, but the meat was not very tender.
Also I thought the ugly portable AC next to us was an eyesore for fine dining.
Nice cocktail though.
I live just a few blocks away from David Burke at Orange Lawn. My kids and I wanted a special weeknight treat so we reserved a table for ourselves. What a pleasant experience we enjoyed at this restaurant! The ambiance is chic but also very warm and inviting. The staff was friendly and welcoming. Our food was very delicious. I loved that there were a number of vegetarian options on the menu, including a vegetarian entree. Oftentimes, if I want to eat a vegetarian meal at a restaurant I have to cobble together a bunch of appetizers or sides and hope I’ll be satisfied. At Orange Lawn I had delicious cucumber and zucchini noodles in pesto for my appetizer and then a yummy cauliflower steak with green beans and almonds over puréed beets. My favorite part of the meal was dessert, though. The tin can warm chocolate cake is heavenly and the presentation is whimsical and creative. Our server started off the dessert portion of our meal with a plate on which rested three metal beaters covered in luscious chocolate cake batter to whet our appetites for the tin can filled with chocolate, baking for us in the oven. The cake baked in this cute “can” was plentiful enough for the three of us and was accompanied by fabulous accoutrements: ice cream, some of the best whipped cream I’ve ever tasted, homemade Heath Bar crunch and caramel sauce. One of the servers portioned it all out for us with great care. It was lovely. My only criticism is that some of the wait staff, though extremely friendly and eager to please, seemed a bit on the inexperienced or awkward side. I think they’d be perfectly polished with just a bit more training, but really that’s just a minor point. Overall I loved the restaurant and will definitely become a regular. So excited that such fine dining is right in my backyard!
It was very nice
David was an amazing host
Our group of friends were excited to dine here as we love the location. Given the restaurant just opened, we will temper our disappointment, hope they improve, starting with the ridiculously slow service.
Food was excellent. Great restoration of the old clubhouse.
Unbelievable experience with outstanding food and service.
Excellent service, great ambience and exceptional food.
Loved this place. David Burke was there and came by our table. Great experience. Food was fantastic!!
This was our first visit and we totally enjoyed it. We will definitely return.
We really enjoyed the lobster dumplings, steak with gnocchi and banana cream pie with toasted coconut. I do not recommend the scallops and octopus entree, but everything else was very good.
Overall experience was good. A few dishes missed the mark however. We ordered Tuna tar tar tacos after seeing them at another table. There was far less tuna than you’d assume by looking at them from a distance. The cavatelli was recommended but the peas were undercooked and the cavatelli themselves were too big and far too thick. (To their credit we were comped that dish.) The octopus and scallops as well as burrata salad were good. For dessert we opted not to wait the 20 min for chocolate cake and instead ordered a hazelnut chocolate one. It was clearly prepared earlier (even the chocolate drizzle on the plate) and kept in the fridge and we could certainly tell.
The restaurant is only a few months old so we’ll give it another shot, hoping they work out a few kinks.
So happy to see David Burke open his new outposts at the Orange Lawn. The renovations are spectacular and the food and wine is spot on. Welcome to the neighborhood!
Everything was perfect!
The food was spectacular particularly the clothesline bacon and the various fish dishes. The david burke team was very attentive as usual to our every need. I can’t wait to return for another meal!
We were surprised when we received the bill and the special of the day (Veal Milanese) was $60
It would have been nice to mention the price of the dish when mentioning the specials
Being a fan of David Burke (and his brother, Robert, We really wanted to love this restaurant, but...
Negatives - dining room tables are too tight and close together
(Eliminate 3 tables)
Tables are too small
Service was terrible.
Had to send espresso back because it was cold and no scums
Worst part was the bill, overcharged for the wine and the espressos, and they added an additional membership fee onto the bill.
Will probably try again in a few months with the hope they get their kinks out and hire a better staff.
Wonderful! From the moment we pulled up the we felt welcome and greeted kindly. My husband and I had cocktails, several appetizers and dessert. We had decided not to get an entree because 3 appetizers was plenty of food for us (we are trying not to overeat!) Our server had no problem with this and we appreciate that! The crab raft and tuna taco were delicious and we had the banana coconut pie for dessert! Cocktails were creative and my wine was also very good.
Definitely going back (since we can walk to restaurant). If it just the two of us we may sit at bar and not in the dining room.
One of worst dining experiences I’ve ever had. Seated next to family with young children who were running around entire evening. We should have been offered different tables. Manager and David Burke were aware of the problem but did nothing.
Food was fair but value for price was poor
Overall a fabulous dining experience - staff was wonderful!
Great food fair service convenient
We arrived at 7:45 for an 8pm reservation. We were told to wait at the bar and a server would come take our drink orders. No server came. I placed my own order at the bar. At 8:30 we still had not been seated. When I asked the manager about our reservation she said oh I can find a table for you now. She was not apologetic. I was dismayed at the level of service. We left before dining and enjoyed a great dinner elsewhere.
Food and service were great. AC wasn’t working in main dining room and it was hot as hell and they did nothing about it. You would think they would have offered some discount or free desert or something. Especially being a new restaurant.
Food was excellent - menu was creative. Newly renovated space was quite pleasant. Service was very good.
Only complaint was that the main dining area got hotter as the evening went on, became impossible to ignore after a while.
Will be back.
Food was good. Service was not. The wrong food was brought out and then one of our party was not served her dinner 10 mins. after the rest of the party.
There was a long delay before our order was taken.
Tasting menu tuesdays are outstanding!
Overall experience was lovely. The food and drinks were delicious. Only issue is that the food came too fast and the drinks didn’t!
One of the best meals we've had in recent years. Absolutely perfect food and experience
The most innovative food anywhere in Essex county, prepared impeccably. The service could not be more attentive and the setting most pleasant.
This fresh, upscale yet relatable new spot is worth a try. The country club meets B&B vibe is a refreshing change from the new crop of Restoration Hardware inspired eateries in nearby Maplewood. We enjoyed the drinks and the shrimp and avocado appetizer was outstanding. We weren’t all that impressed with our entrées. The tuna was served lukewarm and while clearly fresh, it lacked flavor. And the pasta was too heavy and over salted. The service however was excellent and friendly, and David Burke meandered from table to table and say hello to guests in his casual and welcoming manner. A nice touch. I’m sure the food will only get better as they hit their stride. Desserts looked amazing though we were too full from the enormous popovers (who can resist) and that robust pasta. Next time.
Food was delicious
Visited 6 weeks into new restaurant. Menu and prep were excellent as was wait staff. Still some "kinks" in computer system and "front line staff" communication. Thought the ambiance was nice and casual, but pricing was a bit high for a location at a tennis club Will return with "eyes open" but less often than originally thought (because of the pricing).
After an awkward reception by the 3 people involved with the host stand ( despite an on time arrival for our rez) they agreed to seat us in the main DR after first attempting a table in another room. Then there was some initial confusion as to who our server was so we waited 20 minutes for someone to come over. Once we had Michael, we were in great hands- very knowledgable about the menu and accommodating when one item wasn't quite right. David Burke is still on top of his game when it comes to great taste, creativity and presentation.
The room was well appointed and had a nice buzz.
We could definitely overlook the early service missteps and come back soon.
