David Burke at Orange Lawn
Wonderful restaurant! Love the decor. Food and service were excellent.
This was our second time. We had GREAT server - Mona. She was fantastic. The Food was not as good as the first tine we went. The bacon was cold, the sides were somewhat bland, the octopus was dry. The first time we went it was one of the best meals I had had in years in NJ, so was very optimistic. Hopefully it will get better.
Lovely room, good service, delicious food. Accommodating to my special dietary needs. We will go again.
Certainly, one of the best restaurants in Essex county and proud that is in South Orange.
Our soup arrived like warm the waiter soon returned with Hot Lobster bisque which
was cleverly presented and delicious.
It’s a lovely space, wall of windows. We tried several of their specialty cocktails, all were amazing inventive and delicious.only issue is drinks came after food arrived. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Omelettes were special, fluffy. One person had the pancakes loved them. Another the eggs Benedict very good, and another had the chicken avocado blt. The only glitch was after specifically asking if it came with bacon for sure, it arrived without the bacon. They remedied it quickly. Only thing I felt should have happened is that they should have offered free coffee/expresso or something to offset the drinks delay and the hiccup with one diners meal. So dinged them on service for this. The actual servers where very good. Note because it’s not DT it makes it easier if you want a place you can park and go in, vs drive around trying to find a spot, or walk long distance to your dining spot. That alone gives it an edge over some of the downtown south orange spots, especially if it’s a meet up with everyone coming up to 45 mins away.
There were moments when our party of six were really impressed with the restaurant--the room and view are beautiful, the staff are friendly, and the donuts and bacon were particular favorites. But, the staff is pretty disorganized. They were never rude, but for instance, when the coffee pot ran out halfway around our table, one server said he'd come back to finish pouring and never did. We had meals and no cutlery. Apps but no plates. 20 minutes between cocktail orders. One order left out--and then they kindly took it off our bill--but when it came it was an Avocado BLT without the bacon. I'm hopeful the restaurant is just working out the kinks, and we'll be back, but there are definitely gaps in the system.
Everything was absolutely amazing.
Great cocktails. Delicious food and sides. Too full for dessert!
We ended up sitting at the bar and having dinner . The hostess was pre occupied when we arrived and a little negative . The rest of service was great . Loved the bartender and restaurant manager . The food was really solid . Clothesline bacon and pickles were amazing . Loved the cucumber noodles . Also butter poached lobster was fantastic . Nice eclectic wine list . We will go back
Went with another couple to celebrate my wife's birthday. The food was delicious; however, the service was horrible. She. We arrived we noticed they were hosting a wedding this particular Saturday evening. We also found out at the end of the evening that four workers called out.
Drinks were delicious although getting a second drink was a near impossibility since no one would stop by the table. We finally had to flag down a bus boy to get the expeditor to stop by and take our drink order.
Appetizers were equally delicious. Lobster dumplings, clothes line bacon, and Tuna tartare rocks, and a Caesar salad.
Entrees included the roasted chicken, duck, and 2 scallop and octopus dishes.
Evening ended with our kids calling for rides home and we were not able to get them because the service was so bad that it seemed like we were there all night (and we were).
It's a shame because the food was so good. Lisa was our waitress and was pretty much MIA all night after she first came to the table. Honestly had to give other people working there every order of food or drinks. She should be avoided at all costs.
I would probably give them another try because the food was that good but would need to be assured that they are sufficiently staffed.
Surprisingly excellent meal for unusual seating. Everything was good from start to finish.
One of the best meals you can have in NJ!
My first visit to David Burke’s new restaurant in South Orange was with a group of 6 friends in celebration of several birthdays. It was a great success. Local, delicious food and drinks, wonderful service, extremely professional yet friendly staff. Bread was awesome, lobster soup amazing, and the chocolate tin cake dessert a MUST HAVE!! We left planning a return visit for lunch. Well Done!
Awesome service, great food, beautiful ambiance. We plan to keep coming back. Love being back on the grounds of the Orange Lawn Tennis Club where I spent many hours watching great tennis matches decades ago.
Lunch with friends on a Sunday, was perfect!
I treated my husband to a birthday dinner and it was great! We had been to a David Burke restaurant in the city, so we saw some familiar treats—namely the cheese popovers and the bacon on a clothesline. :)
The lobster dumplings were the best thing I ate! Get some! All the food was really delicious and the service was just right.
We plan on returning for another date night!
Lisa is perfection, food was outstanding,LOVE the place!
Fantastic! Food delicious and presentation was outstanding
Having now enjoyed a Saturday evening dinner and a Sunday afternoon brunch at OLTC, it is obvious that Chef Burke and his team are aiming to provide their guests with a memorable experience, with good food being a given. The food was delicious -- fresh and creative, the service was impeccable, and the atmosphere is delightful and refreshing. The OLTC has that special old-world character with beautiful details, but with plenty of new-world updates. The entire wall of windows overlooking the front lawn is lovely. We recommend it highly and are looking forward to returning again!
From a smiling face at the door to the amazing meal. I couldn't stop thinking about the experience. Such a great location as well being minutes from downtown. Looking forward to dining again soon
The oysters were tiny and shouldn’t have been served. Our cappuccinos came half full. Other then that the meal was great.
Really great restaurant and exactly what the area needed. Cuisine was on par with great restaurants in the city without the 45 min drive. Wait staff was exceptional and overall it was a great experience. I would highly recommend it to people in the area to ensure we keep this option and it is successful.
Great ambiance and great food
Great food and service overall, a little on the salty side but good overall. Wine list is pricey though
Sorry to say our waitress was simply terrible. I have been here once previously w my fiancé and we had an incredible time. We hyped the place up to our friends who accompanied us this time. Our reservation was 9pm. My friend and I both planned on ordering the veal special. We had actually spoken about it beforehand we were that excited. Our waitress takes our order and he orders it and she says “you’re so lucky you got the last one!”. Perhaps she should have contained her excitement if he was the last person to order his meal but he wasn’t. I get the restaurant sometimes runs out of stuff but how she handled it was comical. We then didn’t get bread until middle of meal after we had to ask for it repeatedly. Wine orders were forgotten at times and late. Wine was spilled. She was honestly a nice person and I don’t intend for her to get in trouble so to speak but it simply was really terrible for what we expected. I also know burke himself would want to know this because you can obviously tell he sets a high standard for his restaurants. Also, the lobster dumplings, which were so amazing the first time we went there, were cold and just didn’t seem fresh. We honestly had such a “bad” experience that we made light of it and just laughed the entire time because it was quite simply one bad event after another. I am not one to complain but we were about to go to a manager. We simply didn’t want it to be awkward and we didn’t want to have to say negative things about our waitress etc.
The service was outstanding, servers were all attentive and friendly. We never wanted for anything. The food was just good. I have to say that I expected more. For appetizers we ordered the lobster dumplings but it was hard to tell that there was lobster in the dish and the presentation was awkward; there was a lobster leg coming out of the center of each dumpling. This was inedible and just plain silly. My husband ordered one of their signature appetizers, clothespin bacon. Very tasty but also a bit goofy. They torch the pieces of bacon and bring it to the table on a "clothesline." For our main course, my husband ordered the baked branzino and this dish didn't seem to come together. First of all, when we have ordered branzino in other restaurants the whole fish is usually served (2 fillets), here there was only one fillet and the vegetables surrounding it looked messy. I had the salmon which was cooked just how I like it, served with an interesting brown rice. All-in-all, we were not impressed.
We went here on a Friday night with another couple. We were so excited to try it. The food and drinks were excellent, but the service left a lot to be desired. We were waiting so long the manager ended up taking our order. No one apologized to us. We had high hopes, but with service like that I’m not date we will be back.
The food was surprisingly average despite the creative and colorful presentation.
The food is fabulous starting with the popovers and ending with the banana cream pie!!! I'm a foodie and eat out quite a bit and this was right up there with some of the best. Bronzino, crispy chicken, veal and onion rings were all delicious. Highly recommended.
Limited menu, but everything is delicious. Service was impeccable.
We plan to return soon!
David Burke at Orange Lawn is a great addition to our town. The Orange Lawn tennis club is a beautiful setting for a nice dinner out, the drinks are delicious (especially the margarita) and the food is very good (although slightly over salted). Definitely worth a visit.
Wonderful restaurant. We will be back. Very attentive wait staff & food was delicious!!
Great addition to South Orange. We had a lovely dinner. We will definitely come back.
I liked the menu a lot, but the execution could be improved.
We were excited about the steak, but the meat was not very tender.
Also I thought the ugly portable AC next to us was an eyesore for fine dining.
Nice cocktail though.
I live just a few blocks away from David Burke at Orange Lawn. My kids and I wanted a special weeknight treat so we reserved a table for ourselves. What a pleasant experience we enjoyed at this restaurant! The ambiance is chic but also very warm and inviting. The staff was friendly and welcoming. Our food was very delicious. I loved that there were a number of vegetarian options on the menu, including a vegetarian entree. Oftentimes, if I want to eat a vegetarian meal at a restaurant I have to cobble together a bunch of appetizers or sides and hope I’ll be satisfied. At Orange Lawn I had delicious cucumber and zucchini noodles in pesto for my appetizer and then a yummy cauliflower steak with green beans and almonds over puréed beets. My favorite part of the meal was dessert, though. The tin can warm chocolate cake is heavenly and the presentation is whimsical and creative. Our server started off the dessert portion of our meal with a plate on which rested three metal beaters covered in luscious chocolate cake batter to whet our appetites for the tin can filled with chocolate, baking for us in the oven. The cake baked in this cute “can” was plentiful enough for the three of us and was accompanied by fabulous accoutrements: ice cream, some of the best whipped cream I’ve ever tasted, homemade Heath Bar crunch and caramel sauce. One of the servers portioned it all out for us with great care. It was lovely. My only criticism is that some of the wait staff, though extremely friendly and eager to please, seemed a bit on the inexperienced or awkward side. I think they’d be perfectly polished with just a bit more training, but really that’s just a minor point. Overall I loved the restaurant and will definitely become a regular. So excited that such fine dining is right in my backyard!
It was very nice
David was an amazing host
Our group of friends were excited to dine here as we love the location. Given the restaurant just opened, we will temper our disappointment, hope they improve, starting with the ridiculously slow service.
Food was excellent. Great restoration of the old clubhouse.
