Seafood
The Darwin Club, as part of the well established and historically recognized Admiralty House, is a unique seafood dining experience in the Northern Territory.

The restaurant is located in a stunning position overlooking the endemic leafy ground of the Admiralty House, the Esplanade, and further out, the multiple shades of blue of the Arafura Sea.

The venue has an atmosphere of relaxed elegance, perpetuating the legacy of the oldest club in Darwin. The wooden floors, high ceilings, velvet seats and yesteryear photographs will swoop you through the ages, to the 1930 era, Darwin early days.

Put time on pause, come and dine with us. We will ravish your senses with a menu crafted to highlight the exceptional produce that we so carefully source.

Off its game perhaps. Poor quality food for the exorbitant prices. I expected the prices & a high level of cooking. The latter did not happen. Slow cooked squid was overwhelmed with spice such that the pine nuts and raisins could not be tasted at all. I could see them but not taste them. Barramundi was basic. Ok. Just ok. Cheese platter had 2 slivers of blue and multi crackers and muscatals. Maybe they ran out of cheese. Service however was brilliant. Friendly, respectful, informative.

The food was delicious. The only little negative was that our husbands felt the half lobsters were a little disappointing due to being on the smaller side, so the price certainly didn’t reflect the size. Prawns, scallops, vegetable garden, coral trout all beautiful. The service was excellent. Highly recommend!

Darwin Club - Admiralty HouseResponded on 2 August 2022Hi there, We are really glad to read that you enjoyed your experience dinning with us overall. We always try to source our produce from the most sustainable locations in Australia. At the moment, as it's not lobster season down south, we've to order our lobster from WA and are slightly smaller but still delicious. Looking forward to seeing you soon. Regards, Vanessa

We were disappointed. We were a table of four. Two entrees arrived, the other two came at least 10 minutes later. It was obvious that the first two had been sitting under a heat lamp from the crust that was on creamed items on the plate and the dryness of the occy. The bug tails were lovely. The mains, the Patagonian Tooth Toothfish was very good although the skin was very salty, the coral trout was dry, the King George Whiting was described as having triple cooked chips. The chips were actually kipfler potatoes, skin on, cut in half and stacked like Jenga, not an attractive look. The deserts were lovely.

Darwin Club - Admiralty HouseResponded on 3 August 2022Hi Stich, We are sorry to hear that your experience dinning with us didn't achieve your expectations. This was a most disappointing experience. For a start, I booked Char restaurant which is actually downstairs at Admiralty House & when we arrived were shown upstairs which I didnt realise at the time is a different restaurant. I was confused as I thought we were supposed to be in a steak speciality restaurant & the menu was predominantly seafood. After we ordered I asked the manager who said we could could change & go downstairs & there was obviously a fault in the 3rd party booking portal. It took 45 mins to receive our entrees & then another long wait for mains. No bread was offered to keep us going for the long wait. When I asked at one point if our entrees were coming soon, the manager told me the kingfish took at least 20mins to marinate!! For 2 of us to eat 2 courses was 2.5hrs from arrival to finishing main. We weren't game to even try dessert or coffee. My husband received the wrong main course but decided to eat it anyway as we were so hungry. I ordered 2 entrees the first being Kingfish Crudo followed by the Vegetable garden. They looked & in fact tasted almost identical with the former having a few chunks of marinated kingfish tucked under the garnish & the second one having a zuchinni flower tucked amongst the identical salad items. The presentation was beautiful but not really matching the menu description. After we complained that my husbands main course was not what we ordered, the waiter apologised as he remembered taking the order & said we would not be charged. We were not charged for either of our mains but no one came near us after that. The previously very chatty manager never came near & in fact no one even asked us if we wanted to see a dessert menu or order coffee. The space is a beautiful colonial style room & it has great potential but was sadly a very disappointing experience

The evening started off well with a pre dinner champers. The wine arrived and the entrées were pretty good. And then the wheels fell off. The mains were an hour wait - there were only two tables in the restaurant and only 6 people (including the two of us). So we were not expecting to wait quite that long. When queried we were told that the same kitchen services the downstairs Char restaurant and it was busy down there. A pretty poor reason. In the meantime the owner came by for a chat (at least that is who he said he was when we asked). The problem was that he was drunk, holding a glass of alcohol and had spills on his shirt. After our meals finally arrived a random person came to tell us she was ‘mortified’. She didn’t introduce herself so not sure who she was. A bill finally appeared and they had comped us our wine in compensation. Oh, and you can’t pay the bill at your table. You must go to the bar. If this restaurant really aspires to quality this is not good enough in my opinion.

Great venue. Great staff. Great prices! But the food was hit and miss I hate to say. The chowder was fantastic as were the oysters. My fish dish was cold! Cold as if cooked yesterday. As were the chips. Cold! Dishing up cold food- no excuse. And on this occasion I didn’t complain, just let it go. My partners barramundi on the other hand was also fantastic. So go figure… As an aside there were not many diners the night we went, perhaps 10 in total, but peopl3 were still waiting a very very long ti e to be served. Maybe teething troubles?

Though the ambience was five star, the service was average with one particular waiter being rude. The wait time for dinner after the entree was over an hour as there was also a function going on in the garden downstairs that seemed to be getting all the attention. Everyone in the restaurant this night were waiting for the mains the same length of time as we were and you could tell that they were not satisfied. We were considering leaving. It was a shame as we were really looking forward to a good night.

I think the quality of the seafood was hidden by the elaborate treatment in the dishes. My snapper was a bit over cooked, and the accompanying mussels odd - sloppy but seemed undercooked. Maybe the type of mussel? My husband’s octopus was awful - tough, mushy and wet- maybe it had been frozen too long. His Antarctic Patagonian tooth fish in a bisque with pipis was excellent though. The Paris mash was an ordinary, lumpy mash, missing the buttery silkiness it should have. A very interesting wine list entertained us, with some excellent French champagne available by the glass. Service was excellent, apart from having to go to the till to pay, rather than at table. I also really resent this current COVID policy of no cash, and then be charged a credit card fee. It’s everywhere up here and is inexcusable. This was an expensive dinner so one should expect it to be much better across the board. A restaurant of this level in Sydney or Melbourne would not survive delivering erratic quality.

Darwin Club - Admiralty HouseResponded on 27 May 2022Hi Gwenna, thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that your experience at our venue didn't achieve your expectations. We sustainable source our produce from the best locations in Australia as fresh as possible. The mussels, for example, are sourced from Port Lincoln in SA. Our octopus, sourced from Fremantle in WA, is confit in EVOO to make it soft and tender. I'll share your feedback with our chefs to keep improving and offering a better experience everytime. We booked a table to celebrate our anniversary and were hoping for an amazing experience (after driving for 3 hours from Katherine). To note, given the reviews, the table was booked earlier in the week. The service initially was prompt with the drinks, however, was slower with the food. Obviously, there was a food blogger so everyone was busy with the blogger. We waited for over 20 minutes to order dessert - no one came. Hence we decided to finish our champagne and leave. And LASTLY, we requested the bill, which was promptly paid at the counter. ONLY TO BE FOLLOWED BY THE MANAGER OUTSIDE THE RESTAURANT ON THE MAIN STREET IN FRONT OF EVERYONE AND A FULL HOUSE ASKING IF WE HAD CLOSED THE TABLE AS THE SYSTEM WAS SHOWING OUR TABLE 'OPEN'. ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED BY THE SERVICE AND WILL NEVER RECOMMEND THE RESTAURANT AGAIN. P.S HAPPY ANNIVERSARY DARWIN CLUB - WE GET BETTER SERVICE AT THE PUB or AT MCDONALDS.

Darwin Club - Admiralty HouseResponded on 31 May 2022Dear customer, We are sorry to hear that your experience dining with us didn't achieve your expectations. The table had not closed on our system, leading us to believe there had been an issue with the process - we politely asked you to wait one moment while we double checked - a quite reasonable request. This was done discreetly and out of earshot of other diners. I note this seems to be main reason for your review as nothing was mentioned prior on your night. Regards, Vanessa

Order off the meat menu at your own peril. Flavourful spring rolls & perfectly done scallops. However, soggy crab spaghetti (negligible amount of crab) & pumpkin ravioli drenched in overpowering & salty mushroom sauce.

The place provided an intimate and lovely atmosphere to dine in. The booking itself was straightforward and helped the staff recognise the special occasion of the dinner. (They put a little candle on top of our dessert plate with the words 'Happy Birthday' written on which we didn't ask for.) The staff was friendly, not overly solicitous. It was great to find a place that cooked 'wild-caught' and fresh seafood mostly. We loved squid ink risotto and the dessert plate the most. I was a little bit disappointed about the cream chowder (Pancetta was quite tough to eat for my experience) but overall the food we had was very satisfying.

Very ordinary and VERY over-priced Of the approx 8 entree and 8 mains, there were 3 or 4 not available, then when I finally selected one, I was told that part of that dish was also unavailable. My wifes fish was so dry it was inedible.. The desert menu then came, and the same desert description was for 2 different deserts - ALL deserts had white chocolate in them - bad luck if you dont like white chocolate. When i pointed out the same description for 2 different deserts, the waiter said yes thats right, WHY WOULD YOU THEN CONTINUE TO GIVE SOMEONE THIS MENU? VERY overpriced - and not worth the money or the 3 week wait for a booking.

Darwin Club - Admiralty HouseResponded on 2 March 2022Hi Ben, We are sorry to hear that your experience dinning with us didn't achieve your expectations. Like other hospitality business, we have been experiencing interruptions on our supply chain, due mainly to Covid 19. What a lovely way to celebrate NYE especially for couples 💑 at long last Darwin once more can offer 5 star dining. The wait staff were discreet, helpful and attentive. Thank you and praying for a better year for all

Great food, seemed understaffed as we were waiting for our drinks (including water) to be refreshed. Biggest gripe was the website - we thought we were booking Char, not upstairs. Happy to eat anywhere but the view was not the same.

Food took far to long to come out. Lobster Entree lacked flavour, very bland. Main and dessert was tasty - not amazing though. Service was hit & miss.

For a restaurant aiming for a very high standard based upon their cost of menu both the service let them down / poured our own wine / and the food had flaws / potato fondant was raw however other main components well well cooked and presented. Hopefully issues that will be fixed with time

One word, disappointing. Service wasn’t good, the waiters did their best but not up to standard. The food wasn’t good. Flathead was dry and oily, my wife had the Jewfish which was tough and too salty. The dessert didn’t make it to the table after 40mins so we paid the bill and left disappointed. Never again

Drink orders are very slow as come from down stairs. Maybe have barman upstairs also.

Darwin Club - Admiralty HouseResponded on 25 October 2021Thanks for your review Nia, we acknowledge that we need a bartender upstairs. Darwin has been experiencing a shortage of skilled staff in the last months but we are working on it. We already have new staff that we are training, so luckily we'll solve this problem within a week. Thank you so much for dinning with us and we are glad that you had a good experience!
