The space, designed by Pascale Gomes-McNabb, is light and classic. CUMULUS INC. is open throughout the day, seven days a week, whether it be for a coffee, snack, drink or a meal. Breakfast until 11.30am is done simply; organic muesli or perhaps the Full English, with farmhouse slab bacon and smoked tomato. Lunch and dinner include dishes designed to share, charcuterie, oysters shucked to order, salads or the whole roast lamb shoulder.
Plates kept being dropped abruptly on our table. You know when you could barely hear the ingredients they try to tell you. Booking was meant to be for 2 hours, bill popped up 20 min prior. As experienced diners, this could of been orchestrated much more nicely.
Food quality and ingredient combinations were no doubt outstanding, but if we were rushed to enjoy, would have preferred somewhere with better service.
The food is absolutely delicious and I can’t wait to experience it again. There are also some special dishes which are brilliant. Fabulous service, you can’t go wrong coming here.
Very off hand staff. Our food was plopped on the table We had the sense we were to eat and leave. No real pleasure
Great job on food and drink.
very nice ambience and good food. Quite busy as Friday evening but service was good
The food was excellent - thoroughly enjoyed all of it. The service was also excellent - friendly, welcoming and professional staff. We would definitely recommend the restaurant to friends. Our only criticism - we visited the restaurant the day prior to our dinner reservation. We ordered coffees - the coffee was good but the temperature was barely luke warm. Coffee should not be served too hot, but should be hotter than luke warm! Thanks for the great food and service.
Food was good but overpriced. Had ordered fish but was disappointed as it was undercooked and it was only a small piece.
The food was the stand out. Very good food and plenty of it
Very good in terms of accommodating dietary requirements.
Outstanding food & service. The fact they do 1/2 serves gives you the opportunity to try more of their amazing dishes. The staff are friendly & sitting at the kitchen counter gives you the chance to talk to the kitchen staff.
Amazing food, friendly and courteous staff and service, very good value.
One of my favorites in Melbourne. Loved the fried green tomatoes with crab, great wine list and always a fun and energetic vibe.
Nice flavors but nothing special, except lamb which was great! Beef was quite poor.
Got the chef’s menu. Sadly it felt like the leftovers. Would never order it again. Maybe consider trying al a carte menu
Food is well presented but average, service is ok but you would expect something better for the price paid, loved the idea of dining at the kitchen bar and having the chance to see the chefs at work.
Different experience when you come with kids vs. with friends. Definitely not a place to take young kids (my foodie child thought the portions were small and she's a 9yo), but very enjoyable when the food and drinks are shared with great friends and company!
We booked lunch for two on ANZAC Day so expected it to be busy and it was, despite that we had one of the finest dining experiences which I think was very much to do with the privilege of sitting at the open kitchen bar which I have always enjoyed and the excellent service who gladly matched wines from the extensive wine list to our food order. Even Chef took time out to say hello! A great day indeed. Thanks
Best cafe restaurant in Melbourne
Food was very good but tended ti have too much dairy in every dish
Delicious as always
One of the best chef's menus I've had in years. Wonderful mix of tastes, with a bit too much dairy, but all differentiated and lovely. Great, friendly staff.
Disappointing. We wanted an 11 am booking, but were only able to get 12. So imagine our irritation when we arrive at 12 on the dot, only to find 7 empty tables. We were then seated and ignored for 30 minutes, and when we asked for service, were asked to “understand” while they switched to lunch. Except that we had wanted breakfast. OK, so now we are ordering lunch. Except we are then told that most of the mains will take 40+ minutes. I’m all for a leisurely lunch, but not if we are served our mains an hour and half after our reservation.... and then the food was only OK. I haven’t no idea why this place is such a big deal, and the sharing plates trend is getting irritating.
Excellent repas. Ingrédients frais et de qualité. Belle présentation.Très bon service, attentif et convivial. Atmosphère dynamique et animée. Soirée très agréable.
A fab meal and outstanding service from the team! Thank you!
We had the sharing menu and enjoyed every morsel - portion sizes were just right and it took all the stress out of deciding what to eat, a very delicious meal start to finish.
Hadn't had lunch there before, have had dinner many times.
Disappointing on several fronts, unfortunately.
First, our initial waiter had pretty poor English. Not to be too critical here, his English was far better than my French, but it is his job. I'm sure he is marvellous in his native tongue, but it did make ordering a little disjointed.
Second, a couple of issues with the food. The "roasted" zucchini was quite under-done, and calling it roasted is using poetic licence I suspect. They graciously offered to replace the dish, presumably to put it in the microwave to soften it, which made it somewhat more palatable, nonetheless it was a let down.
Unfortunately the steak was even more of a let down. A scotch fillet, cut too thin, was dry and had an odd imbued flavour which neither myself or my fiancee could really put our finger on.
I'll certainly go back, I still rate Cumulus highly, just not on this occasion.
The food is ok but the restaurant is a bit over priced.
A recent meal at Cumulus only solidifies it as a consistent performer in Melbourne's restaurant scene. Bolstered by attentive wait staff that were complimented by a solid food and beverage offering only made for a very pleasant evening. On first glance the menu may not seem offer value for money, however get a glance of the meals as they come out of the kitchen and you will be surprised. When the food is placed into front of you it is well presented without looking like a piece of art. The portions are generous, rich and will certainly leave you full (we couldn't even contemplate dessert). Perhaps the only major criticism is the noise. Plenty of hard surfaces bounce it around making conversation a little challenging but not difficult.
The first part of our experience was dissatisfying to say the least. Five of us attended Cummulus for dinner in between the afternoon and evening acts of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play so were on a strict time line. We had a drink at Cumulus UP before heading down to Cumulus for our 5:30pm booking ( which had been made 5 weeks in advance & the restaurant was advised we would be leaving by 7:10Pm). We were advised unfortunately our table wasn't quite ready but it should only be a couple of minutes and were ushered to a bench on the side wall to wait and offered drinks which was ridiculous as we already had drinks with us from upstairs. After 20 minutes we had to ask again how long our table would be as we had to leave by 7:10pm and were given menus to look at to see what we wanted. Finally after 25 minutes we got to sit at our table. For a restaurant of Cummulus's calibre this is pretty poor. We advised our attendant Charlotte what had occured and our time constraints and she was fantastic. She explained the menu concisely and quickly and made sure our order was processed in the kitchen promptly. A Big thank you to Charlotte for making our experience a whole lot better. Our meal appeared quickly and we managed to finish by 7:00pm. We cannot fault the food it was all delicious. From the tuna tartare to the gnocchi, snapper and lamb. It is just a shame we could not have had the extra 30 minutes as planned. As feeling stressed over the meal detracted from the whole experience.
Yet another sublime couple of hours just disappeared in a haze of contentment - Always such a great buzz at Cumulus - attentive service, beautiful room, so very Melbourne!
Only (really small) suggestions would be to increase the vegetarian options and better lighting in the bathrooms please!
The food was divine, as was the food and ambience of the place. We were disappointed we weren’t told about the specials as we would have ordered...in fact our service wasn’t super friendly and we waited so long for drinks! But it didn’t spoil our evening as everything else was divine. I’d definitely recommend and I’d definitely return.
Cumulus is a classic. Always. Anytime. For lovely food in a relaxed stylish room, with knowledgable staff.
Great food and atmosphere
Great place for lunch with interstate visitors. Food and service outstanding!
We enjoyed the meal but the table was far too small for 4 people, water, wine and plates in the centre we felt squashed and I think it spoilt the experience. I will definately return but hopefully they allow more room for diners
Fantastic food that has more than met the expectation set by it’s sister companies. The service was also out of this world and the server went out of her way to make our night a great one. Will certainly be back for more another night!
Absolutely delicious share plates, great wine list, buzzy inner city wine bar. Would eat there on every trip to Melbourne.
It was hard for us to understand the staff's English because they were too fast. However, both food and drink were delicious.
Great service. Delicious food! Will definitely be back
