CUMULUS INC. Eating House and Bar opened in 2008 in Melbourne’s famous art and fashion precinct, Flinders Lane. Celebrating the historic turn of the century rag trade building in which it is located, the space is a busy social hub offering Andrew McConnell’s acclaimed food. The space, designed by Pascale Gomes-McNabb, is light and classic. CUMULUS INC. is open throughout the day, seven days a week, whether it be for a coffee, snack, drink or a meal. Breakfast until 11.30am is done simply; organic muesli or perhaps the Full English, with farmhouse slab bacon and smoked tomato. Lunch and dinner include dishes designed to share, charcuterie, oysters shucked to order, salads or the whole roast lamb shoulder.

The food is always great at Cumulus, although a limited menu, but the house specialities (Tuna Tartare and Slow Cooked Lamb Shoulder) have been around for a long time now. The service was really stretched and the poor wait staff were running around constantly. To be fair it was a Saturday, but clearly they just couldn't cope with the number of diners. On our table they completely forgot the wine order, and then after a long wait all the shared dishes came together, whilst on the next table they had such a long wait that the waiter brought them a free course. Still a nice restaurant, but needs some refresh and attention.

Excellent weekend lunch experience with friend seated at the bar table overlooking the kitchen where we witnessed impressive leadership and teamwork amongst the chef and team. Staff heeded to the reservation note that we were on a tight schedule and ensured swift service throughout. Flathead seared with a bit of crisp to the skin was the highlight, while other dishes including asparagus and mussels were also very good.

A little noisy when you first walk in, but you get used to it. We were seated at the bench overlooking the kitchen, which we didn’t like at first - stools not comfortable, no back support - but watching the goings on in the kitchen was fascinating. Wait staff sometimes hard to catch, but provided excellent information and suggestions. Food was fabulous!

Stools at the Kitchen have no backs, so aren’t encouraging for a long lunch. Noise level is ok for small groups, but due to the high ceiling, discussions over the table are hard.
Food is good and the wait staff knowable. Meal sizes were reasonable.

Haven’t been in three years and the fond memories weren’t replicated. Had the tasting menu, cold dishes were just that - cold. Like, straight out of the fridge cold. Considering this was most of the menu, it was a bit disappointing that it wasn’t just one dish.

Service was good, ambiance and volume are nice on a weeknight if you want to have decent conversations, but otherwise I think I’ll try other favourites again sooner.

We had a lovely experience at Cumulus Inc. It was our wedding anniversary and the staff spoilt us with special little treats! The food was fantastic, moderately priced and very tasty. We shared the slow cooked lamb and it was cooked to perfection. The service was attentive & friendly.

Had a terrific LONG lunch with four girlfriends. The wine recommendation was spot on. The staff accommodated every request including the specific dietary requirements of one of my guests. Too much salt mars a wonderful restaurant. Four of us ate at Cumulus on Cup Day and enjoyed it very much. While very loud, the tasting menu was very well done, and they accommodated our particular needs. But, what is it with the heavy salt usage? Three different items were a "heavy salt shaker" away from excellence.

Cumulus was very busy when we visited and quite noisy. The staff were attentive, polite and helpful in explaing the content of different dishes. My wife and I found the food unusual, but tasty.

A bit of a serving muck up. Potatoes didn't come - and then when I checked they had been taken off the bill was assured they had - but they had not! We are regulars and this is the first ever mistake - Oopps!

My first dining experience at Cumulus Inc was lovely - hospitable service and delish food (highlight for me were the tuna tartare and the coconut & kiwi meringue dessert)! Feedback for ambiance - I did notice that the floorboard kept creaking when walked over, which made our dining table (seating 4) rock from side to side. Whilst there was no liquid spillage (i.e. drinks) from the rocky table, it may be worth looking into the table placement - otherwise a fantastic experience overall! I'll definitely be back next time, thank you. :)

The food did not have much flavor and we ordered a variety of dishes. It was overpriced for what it was. The service was terrible for a multitude of reasons. We were a party of 6 squished into a tiny table, where we had to ask the people behind us to move so we could get in. Not impressed at all. Very disappointed, as this place has received great reviews. I will not be back.

Food is always good here, but you need to tell the wait staff how you want your plates served and the timing, otherwise you run the risk of the food arriving at different intervals and not in the order you might have wanted. Service was excellent and we had a great time.

When first arriving we were not wowed. We had booked a table for 8:30 and were not seated until almost 8:50, we even ordered food and had our first course of meals come out before we were offered a drink. How ever. A hospitality super star at the venue named Chris swooped in and saved the day. He offered us a cracker of a wine pairing, premium service and went above and beyond and did everything in his power to make sure we left laughing and feeling like we were at home. My partner and I both enjoy dining out quite a bit and are always looking for new and exciting venues to eat at and We would be delighted to return. The food was pretty tasty, the lamb definitely was the star of the show but honestly our evening was made by Chris. Thanks for having us guys. We’ll be back.

Delicious dinner, overlooking the kitchen, oysters, some raw tuna, and a delicious pork cutlet with sides for mains... fantastic and balanced beer list with the Fixation Obsession ticking all the boxes there. A range of wines by the glass we tried a pinot that delightful. Will be back for sure!

Coming to Melbourne, I wanted to treat myself to a nice restaurant. Cumulus Inc kept popping up on all the websites I looked at, so I made a booking. I just left the restaurant, and I’m very disappointed with my dining experience. Upon entering the venue, we were not greeted and had to stand around and wait to be noticed.

I ordered the “Marinated razor back prawns” for entree. There were a few shrimp (not prawns) swimming in the less than pleasant sauce on my plate. Ridiculously tiny portion for the price. The onions and baby carrots in the dish do not compliment the prawns and weren't enjoyable to eat at all. Very disappointed with this dish.

The online menu was different to the menu that was presented tonight, which was really disappointing as I already had my heart set on the “Roast celeriac, Parmesan and Otway Shiitake” and had to order the Ricotta Pie instead. The pie was very disappointing. My mum makes a better ricotta pie and doesn’t charge $40 for it. It was very bland, plain and a huge portion compared to the entree, that I couldn’t even finish, more so because of the lacking flavour than the size. I couldn't even see or taste any ricotta - it was all wilted greens.

My Mum was the first to receive her main, with mine nowhere in sight. Upon asking the chef if my dish will be coming out, he answered - "Do you want it to be?" Not sure why the two main dishes weren't prepared to arrive to the two diners at the same time, as this just added to the negative experience.

I wasn’t impressed with the food or with the service. For the price you pay to dine here, I expected a lot more. If I could turn back time and have dinner elsewhere, I would, as I feel like I wasted my money. I won’t be returning.
