About Continental Deli Bar and Bistro
On Newtown’s Australia Street, you will see a small, square red light burning. Past the Courthouse, past the Police Station and just beyond the Fire Station. Founded by Elvis Abrahanowicz and Joe Valore of Porteño , and Jesse Warkentin and Michael Nicolian (of Bodega and Gardel’s Bar, respectively), our Continental Deli Bar & Bistro is the next institution on this iconic Sydney street.
Continental is the realised passion for a neighbourhood deli. Bring your basket to purchase your specialty deli essentials, be it charcuterie for your next days sandwich, fromage for a friend, or all the elements for a perfect picnic. We have sourced what we consider the most interesting, rare and delicious cheeses and charcuterie as well as an impressive range of tinned delicacies; anchovies from the Bay of Biscay, clams and cockles from Galicia, sardines from France. We are however most proud of the items we have canned ourselves from incredible local produce.

Continental Deli Bar and Bistro Ratings and Reviews
Converted house, good space upstairs in main restaurant. Service was exceptional and very friendly and helpful. Food was great, we really enjoyed our starters - mussels in Harissa with kaffir lime leaf and the quirky scallops in green tomato sauce. We had a section of cold meats, cheddar and anchovies. All splendid and of the highest quality. The restaurant came higly recommended and it did not disappoint. Give it a go, you will not regret it!
We wanted somewhere to meet friends we hadn't seen in 4 years on a Monday night in Newton area, with a degestation / chefs menu type of dining. This isn't the easiest on a Monday so we chose The Continental & hoped for the best. We had a great meal with superb service in a lovely little dining area, we weren't rushed at all even though it was getting late by the time we left & we were even able to buy some lovely cheese from the deli on the way out.
A thoroughly lovely evening, agreed by all 4
Outstanding. Really, really good restaurant. Fantastic menu and great, attentive and unpretentious service. Food was superb. There was a slight mix up with the bill but that was sorted out with no problem at all. I only mention it as evidence of their great ethos and service. Thoroughly recommend the Continental Deli to anyone. Vegans might want to make sure there are enough menu choices.
One of the best meals I have had in Sydney this year. Exciting combination of flavours which really worked. The only drawback was that no coffee or tea was available. With such lovely dinner and dessert, it seemed a pity we couldn't finish off with a hot drink.
Trendy and upmarket on entering, great service but perhaps a little too attentive upstairs. Menu was limited and overpriced for Newtown. We booked for the 6 pm session, we were the only diners upstairs and there was no atmosphere, too quiet. Most dishes were high quality but for a bunch of Italians being served mortadella on a platter is a bit like being served Devon. When you are paying that much you really want some top notch speciality meats! Don't think I'd bother going back.
Again Continental delivers with punching well above expectations. Every time we dine here the food gets better and better - fresh innovative sublime favours. Four of us did dinner and let Continental choose the courses a great way to savour all the favourites a plus a few new tastes. Not one let done each course timed to perfection presented brilliantly and taste combinations brilliant. Hhard to pick best - we all had different favourites
The service is always outstanding. Dominique is the most friendliest and professional host EVER. 10/10 just for her smile alone.
The wine list, the aperitifs, the digestifs, the cocktails are brilliant. We had a beautiful Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.
The food is unbelievable. The banquet is an amazing deal. That dessert - chocolate pudding with cumquat and yoghurt sorbet to die for.
This isn't the first time I've been. But everytime I dine here, I'm always amazed at how fabulous the place is.
A group of us dined at Continental on Tuesday night and can not stop raving about how fantastic the food, service and venue was. The food has a nice twist and we loved how it was nice to be eating something different, the service was excellent, we were seated in a private area and they were more than flexible with our changing guest numbers and the venue decor is full of character. I can not recommend it highly enough.
The waitstaff were very friendly and attentive and the atmosphere was lovely; downstairs was vibrant whilst upstairs was quite peaceful, yet lively. The food was not as good as I had anticipated as the flavours were not balanced perfectly with many of the sauces/dressings being too strong (this was the case with the watercress salad and the octopus). The chocolate cake desert was delicious.
Good ambience and service, but extremely noisy at times. The food was delcious, especially the baked Beetroot stracciatella, shredded mozzarella cheese, toasted bread crumbs and rocket. We have had another three servings if we could. So moorish. Unfortunately, due to an extremely noise table of 4 next to us, we had to miss dessert. Shame.
As soon as you walk in you're greeted by the lovely staff and ushered to your table... wait staff are super attentive and were knowledgable enough to answer questions on menu items and confident enough to make suggestions based on our requests.
The food came out and we were delighted with what we were served... our table was a little tight to the wall, but we enjoyed our experience regardless.
Would definitely return and will recommend to friends! 😊
From the get go, the service was amazing. Table was ready even though we were a little early, & our waitress was very attentive without being ever present. She made recommendations when we ordered and stopped us from ordering a massive plate that would have put us in a food coma. The food was incredible, the steak tartare & potato puree was so good, I thought about it again this morning. All up - would recommend in the blink of an eye. Thank you for helping us celebrate our anniversary in style!
From the second we walked in, the staff greeted us so amiably it was really refreshing. They are thorough, eager to please and friendly.
The food was great - we ordered the cheese and charcuterie board with the softest, spongiest sourdough (could've done with some salt in our olive oil), kingfish, steak tartare and a pumpkin & stracciatella dish. We got the crepe suzette for dessert and it was a bit too liquer-y or bitter for our tastes. Prices are a little on the steep side.
Food was good. Nice ambience. But staff kept rushing us - hurrying us to order, taking our plates away before we finished and checking on us every five minutes so we can eat and leave. If you have tables for people to sit down and eat....let them sit down and eat. Otherwise just have a bar.
