Chez Billy Sud Ratings and Reviews
I’ve now been to Chez Billy Sud 3 or 4 times and I am consistently underwhelmed. The food is only ok. There are WAY better restaurants in the area (and all over DC) for french food (and wine). The space is cute and it is convenient but unless you can’t get in anywhere else, not worth it. Maybe the fact that it used to be hard to get into and now isn’t (and wasn’t that crowded) is a sign others agree? Also, I got a glass of wine that was clearly bad - agreed upon by every person (all well versed in wine) at the table and she kept trying to tell us that they just had a lot of “all natural” and “hip” wines and acted like we didn’t know what we were talking about. In addition to it being poor service, she came across as an idiot. Having said that, the wine bar next door is very fun and has a great atmosphere. I’d suggest finding another restaurant for dinner and going there for a drink before or after!
We loved the food, but the waiter came every 5 seconds to ask us if we needed something. That was exceptionally annoying, and he didn't seem to get the hint. Also, he took our plates immediately after we put our forks down which was rude and gave the impression that he wanted us to leave. Management should instruct its staff to give customers space and time to enjoy their food.
Dinner was spectacular. We were able to sit on the patio, which is set back from 31st Street, and it was a lovely evening, and food and service were excellent.
Split the moules & frites for an appetizer. Then we each had the tuna...also excellent. We ordered two desserts...cassis sorbet and chocolate pot de creme, which we shared. Excellent wine at a reasonable price.
Chez Billy is my go to place for a great meal, friendly service and warm ambiance. We sat outside for dinner - what a lovely spot....no outside car or passerby distractions. My out of town guest was raving about the dinner "experience" which reflected very positively on me. Thank you!!!
I frequent Chez Billy Sud regularly as I live nearby. Came here again after a long trip away. The food is always excellent and the ambience nice. But depending on who my server is the experience is the difference between night and day. Every time a tall, gruff server serves me it is thoroughly unpleasant. He is impatient and completely off putting. Contrast his service to that of Adam. Adam is always attentive and courteous even at the busiest of times. I don't know the name of the first waiter but management should have a word with him. He should improve or he shouldn't be in the service industry.
Chez Billy is always one of my favorite places. Great atmosphere and good food. When the weather is nice the patio is a wonderful place to eat and quiet enough for conversation. Unfortunately, inside can get a bit noisy when busy. Nothing some additional acoustic touches couldn't fix. Wish they would make that adjustment so inside is as enjoyable as outside dining. I would come more often!
Once again, Chez Billy Sud's chef and staff presented a perfect dining experience for us. We were greeted warmly, shown to our table quickly, given menus, etc., all the things that should happen when you go to a restaurant but don't always follow. The dinner of Oeufs en meurette for my husband and a generous salad verte for me, followed by Confit de Canard for both of us was perfect. My husband ended the meal with an Apple Charlotte. I had a glass of Sauternes. Another lovely meal at a favorite restaurant!
I've come to this restaurant many times and I hope that it was just a fluke that we had two dishes that were disappointing this time. The bib lettuce salad had less-than-fresh lettuce – ribs turning brown. And the Cassis sorbet was so sweet that neither of the people who ordered it could eat it.
We were able to sit out on the patio, which was quiet and delightful. The waitress was knowledgeable and made excellent recommendations. We both had a delicious trout dish with good wine. While it is often challenging to secure reservations at Chez Billy Sud, we got lucky this Monday evening.
So happy I discovered this French gem for Sunday lunch. Everything was excellent overall. The tuna nicoise was delicious, the best I've had anywhere. The service was great, and the wine recommendation was perfect. Dessert and cheese courses were also very good. I will definitely be back for more French flavor.
I was able to get a last-minute reservation for an early dinner, which was fine for my sister and me. Chez Billy Sud is elegant and friendly, and reminded both of us of dining in France. We opted to sit outside in the courtyard, which is why the noise level was low. The tables in the courtyard are spaced much farther apart than the ones inside - I cannot comment on the interior noise level. Our waiter was great; friendly, informative, and attentive.
We started with excellent smoked bluefish rillettes which came with toasted bread which was baked in-house, according to our server. We then ordered the trout and salmon dishes, which we shared. Both were excellent, but my sister commented that the trout was a bit salty. I figured that was due to the capers in the dish, which I liked. The peach sorbet for dessert was a pale pink dream. We'd definitely love to return for another meal.
After wanting to dine at Chez Billy Sud for a long time I was disappointed in the food. The restaurant is lovely. The service was fine. But the smoked trout didn't have much flavor. Ditto for the Croque Madam. The mussels were fine but nothing special. Best thing was the French fries and we decided we ate too many of them.
Was there for a business lunch. I had the gazpacho, which was little bit too pureed for my taste, but it was good. And the chicken liver pate. very good. This restaurant is consistently good and is a highly recommended location for lunch or dinner in Georgetown
To die for!
Food out of this world: sophisticated, fresh, great combinations of proteins and vegetables, portions just enough to leave full without any leftovers.
We had: pate for an appetizer; trout, tuna and duck as entrees and desert of apple/brioche. All of it was delicious.
Cocktails are perfectly made: good variety for those that prefer hard liquor to wine.
Service attentive but not "in your face" European-style - perfect in fact. Loved it, always looking forward to coming back for any occasion.
This was our first time here, but we loved it from start to finish. The decor is charming, the staff attentive and friendly, the mood relaxed, and the food delicious. I loved that it wasn't loud and we could have a real conversation, and our server who checked my ID actually noticed it was my birthday and put a candle in my dessert, which was such a thoughtful touch! I almost want to keep this restaurant secret, because I don't want it to be overrun, but I can't not write a glowing review. Chez Billy Sud is now definitely among my top 5 restaurants in DC.
My sister ( a DC resident) and I chose Chez Billy Sud to celebrate my husbands birthday / retirement; we could not have made a better choice. We were warmly greeted by Diana who picked up our unintentional comment about the celebratory nature of the evening. Our server Carlos, was fantastic with his mastery of the menu and willingness to guide us through our cocktail and meal choices. The Foie de Volaille was outstanding! Each of us loved our entrees, the Trout, the Steak Frites / Allen Beef and the Duck confit. Because we were so content and savoring our our meals we passed on dessert. However, we were treated to a lovely surprise of sherbet and Proseco ala Diana and Carlos . We can't praise this operation more . We visit the capitol often and plan to make Billy a part of each visit.....Bravo!
Recent lunch at Chez Billy Sud was to celebrate a recent retirement. The lunch menu was small but offered great options. Both of us really enjoyed our food choices. The service was excellent. We especially enjoyed the option of eating on the small brick patio. It provided a peaceful setting for a leisurely meal with lots of conversation. I definitely plan to return for another special occasion. The one and only disappointment was the cost of the parking in the garage suggested by the restaurant webpage - $22 for just a couple of hours seemed excessive, but perhaps as a suburbanite I am not well versed in parking costs in the city.
