Cellar Bar (Al Fresco)
Food was underwhelming
Calamari dry with a couple of dry pickled lettuce leaves
Pasta ragu clumpy mince not very tasty
Tiramisu dumped on the plate tasted gluey
Waiting staff were excellent and attentive though
A disappointing experience compared to previous visits over the years. The kingfish didn’t taste fresh and was very expensive for the portion size. The bruschetta was nice and the gnocchi OK.
Our waitress was most unpleasant - alternately dismissive (including correcting me when I mispronounced the name of a wine. I’m happy to be corrected, but not when it comes with literal eye rolling) or gushing, and totally insincere overall. I would never want to be served by her again. I wish I had got her name but unfortunately I did not.
Base don’t our experience I would not return.
Great as always. They work hard to ensure customers have a great experience there. Wonderful.
Outstanding clasic Italian food. Surprisingly cheap for such high end fair.
Grossi is a classic Melbourne institution, and it was a perfect summer’s night sitting outside. Food brilliant, staff so lovely.
I chose the CellarBar for Dinner with friend, seeking elevated food and a good wine list at a reasonable dining hour - hard to find just now. I was not disappointed. Despite a delay caused by freak weather, staff were calm, accommodating and friendly without being intrusive. We felt welcomed and enjoyed a delightful meal with well-paired wine by the glass. The handmade pasta was exceptional - while I very much enjoyed my tagliatelle with bolognese ragu (comfort food made delightfully), I had food envy for my friend's tortellini with pumpkin and sage - a delicate and beautifully balanced dish. We will be back!
Perfect food and atmosphere for a summers evening.
Food was beautiful. Service was OK.
Would definitely go back.
It was a nice lunch with a pleasant atmosphere
A really consistent experience. Great food, perfectly cooked and presented.
The gentleman who served us towards the end was excellent.
Quintessential Melbourne - classic Italian food done and seamless service at the top of Bourke Street.
WE ENJOYED BEING OUTDOORS ON A BALMY MELBOURNE EVENING, FIRST TIME HERE, WILL VISIT AGAIN. SERVICE COULD HAVE BEEN A LITTLE MORE ATTENTIVE, BUT OVERALL VERY GOOD EXPERIENCE.
I've been a satisfied customer for many years but I have to say there were a number of disappointing aspects to my most recent visit last Friday 17 Dec.
I booked a table for 3 people, we were allocated a table for 2 with an extra chair - there was no room for the plates/glasses etc.
The cotoletta Milanese was mediocre at best - I think the oil or the pan was the one they used to fry fish/calamari so the meat had a distinctive fish taste.
The waitress was stressed looking after too many tables, but tried very hard to please everyone while other waiting staff were standing around.
I can't believe and it's a pity that for the first time in many years, I think I could have had better.
I think it was just one of those off nites for the floor. It took around 30 mins and a great deal of waving to be able to order , then a further 45 mins when our mains arrived the entree seemingly forgotten. As usual of course the food was excellent, a consistently superb ragu (which I can’t reproduce at home even with Guys book ☺️ lovely fish of the day mackerel fillet. It’s worth saying that the floor worked overtime to make up for the sub par service insisting on an extra glass of red for us and removing deserts from our docket. So in the end still a favourite haunt 😍
Disappointing experience. Having dined here regularly, I appreciate that Cellar Bar was understaffed. However the food was cold on arrival,lAs we were dining Al fresco they should be prepared and ensure that heaters are working especially given the current weather. Unfortunately the experience this time was poor
Food excellent as expected, staff did very well considering the shortage
Food was good, and Sergio’s service was outstanding. Would highly recommend.
Only downfall - there were some drunken very noisy at the table next to us at the beginning of our time there which made it difficult to have a conversation over dinner.
What is there to say when you go to the Cellar Bar for a meal it's exceptional traditional Italian food!!
For the price, very underwhelming. I don’t doubt the quality of the produce but what came out of the kitchen didn’t do it any justice, and a 150+% mark up on a bottle of wine readily available at many other restaurants around town is disappointing. Service was average, our request to change tables given ours was very wobbly wasn’t met with any kindness. The atmosphere at the outside tables on Bourke St was however great.
Had a wonderful time here, we got seated outside and it was great ambiance with the city lights. Quick service and the food was very quick too! Special highlights were the kingfish and the gnocchi which were both impeccable!
Service was very poor. We ordered drinks that didn’t come until after we had finished eating. Staff were very inattentive but the food was pretty good.
The ambiance was perfect, sitting outside absolutely perfect.
Staff were great!
Food was great, however the croquettes were a bit cold in the middle and 2 out of 4 of us chose the ragu fettuccine and It wasn’t great, my husband got the pork it was delicious and our other guests got the pumpkin ravioli, (I think was the ravioli pasta) that looked fabulous.
So all and all was beautiful, I just wouldn’t recommend the ragu fettuccine as It was not as tasty as the other food.
I’ll be back.
Great food and good service. Seating near the door is a bit chilly with the constant opening and closing to provide service to the outdoor tables
A Melbourne institution, nothing beats people watching at Grossi while enjoying a simple, delicious bowl of pasta here. Will be back soon!
Always a treat. Comfortable and convenient. Staff well trained and thoughtful.
The Cellar Bar has been my go to place for a quick reliable lunch with a glass of wine for more than fifty years.
Keep it up.
Excellent food and service. The eggplant parmigiana was the best l have ever tasted!
As usual fabulous food and service.
Always a great experience! The food is perfect and the service is always friendly and quick. When going to Cafe Grossi it’s like eating in Italy.
I haven't been here for years and I so loved coming back. I love the original decor and its Italian feel. The food was great - it was a wonderful trip down memory lane for me. Will definitely be going back.
Good atmosphere. Food was average tasting. Potatoes were great!
It’s an ever familiar Melbourne gem.
The best place for chilling, catching up with people or just people watching. The outdoor area is beautiful. Services were amazing.
I found antipasto dishes so-so but the pasta and main like ragu or OX cheek Absolutely divined. I cannot wait to return for those dishes. Amazing tiramisu as well and that's from someone who's normally not a fan of it.
It’s always delightful! Love that it’s unchanged in terms of ambience, and that you can pop in, book, arrive, and it’s ever familiar and a Melbourne favourite.
Carlo & all the staff were delightful & the food was fantastic.
I will definitely be back.
Beautiful dinner for our first date night out of lockdown!
The lunch was tasty and the service attentive. We sat inside because the swirling pollen would have triggered an allergic reaction. However, it was such a lovely day that sitting outside looked enjoyable.
We always loved this place. It is casual yet very European and feels like you are going out. Be it for lunch or dinner or just having a coffee. Will always come back.
First lunch since coming out of lockdown. You can always know that going to Cellar Bar you are going to get the best service and overall experience. It never lets you down!!!
Perfect way to come out of lockdown in Melbourne
