The food was very nice, however was overpriced. Fish and chips for $30 and not even one lettuce leaf with it . Salad would have been nice. The berry ice cream was superb.

While the staff were friendly and the ambience nice we felt the food and presentation was poor. We had 2 entrees and then decided to leave based on the lack of quality. The mushroom fitters were quite tasty but served without garnish or any type of accompanying sauce. The zucchini fritters were simply tempura batter fried pieces of zucchini served without any garnish (details show you care) and accompanied by a lack lustre sauce.
Sorry Captain Moonlite but we feel a lot more attention to detail is required and less fried choices. The main courses we liked were only available as a serve for 2 people which is also very limiting. Anglesea really needs some good food choices, so please don't give up guys just keep improving and trying harder with more choices, attention to presentation and toss out the fryer ! or at least keep it on the back shelf - fresh is best !

We were really looking forward to this meal. We had traveled from Melbourne for our anniversary and I guess this has heightened our disappointment.
We were seat on time and our waiter asked if we wanted to start with some still or sparkling water. We asked for sparkling and waited, d waited, and waited. 45 minutes later he came back, after clearing most of the tables around us and finally asked if we wanted to order a drink, we still hadn't recieved our water at this stage, 45 mins in. We said we'd like to order since we had been waiting so long and ordered the white bait and octopus for starters and the $30 a serve fish and chips for main.
The starters were excellent. The white bait in particular, was exceptional.
An hour and forty minutes after ordering, we finally recieved our main. At $30, we were expecting something incredibly good, an unusual take on the dish, exceptional ingredients, SOMETHING???
The reality, was that it was huge in size but low on quality. Ok for a fish and chip shop, just. The fish was over battered and greasy and the chips were very dark and borderline burnt. It was not nice to eat.
We watched the waiter and floor staff float around chatting when tables were left with dirty dishes on them and we waited for our meal. The kitchen was full and there were a few free tables so definitely not at capacity.
We ordered the Black Berry cheesecake and the licorice and anzac biscuit icecream for dessert. These were both quite good.
The overall feeling was that the staff don't care and have better places to be. The whole fish and chips dish needs to be reconsidered. $30 is an unacceptable price to pay for chip shop quality in a hatted restaurant.
Every course was exceptional. The Lamb and the donuts in particular.

Amazing fresh food with a beautiful vista. This is seasonal and fresh and yes leans towards the mediterreanean greek flavours but just good food.
Portions are small so be aware
The only downside is parking is horrific especially at the moment with the new surf club being built...allow an extra 20minutes to find a spot!
We had a magnificent lunch looking over the beach. The lamb was delicious and I loved the anchovy donut. Service was kind and attentive. Can’t wait to go back. It’s wonderful to have such a fabulous restaurant in Anglesea.
Our lunch, on a not wildly busy day took well over an hour to arrive. The waiter apologised, but did not ask whether we would like another drink while we were waiting. It was as if we were an annoyance because something had happened to our order (3 x the same dish, so nothing complicated about the order). Very disappointing, particularly as we had driven a long way just to have lunch. Food was good, scenery lovely, but a less a wonderful experience.
The slow cooked lamb for two was superb - it just broke apart it was so tender. Service was excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience.
There was nothing drastically wrong with our dinner at Captain Moonlight but the meal and the service we received was far from what we had hoped for to celebrate my husband’s birthday. One of the female wait staff (the younger one)was excellent and the location in the Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club is different; a little quirky, and can be spectacular if your seat is facing the sea.
Nonetheless I cannot for the life of me understand how this restaurant has a ‘hat’. It is no more than at best a pleasant seaside cafe.
To start, our entrees were served very quickly, even before the cocktails we ordered first up had been served to us. It is nice to enjoy a pre dinner drink on its own rather than drink it as an accompaniment to food. I felt that was poor form and it was disappointing that our Aperol Spritz’ came in a water/beer glass.
I chose badly for my entree as when the dusted prawns that I ordered arrived I saw that they hadn’t been shelled. I cannot stand eating unshelled prawns so my husband gallantly ate those and I had his calamari which was tasty but quite tough.
Our fish and chips main course was excellent. The fish was crisp and beautifully cooked.
Our half bottle of white wine was also an excellent choice.
A waiter served us the wrong salad so we had to send it back, asking for a replacement. Feeling very underwhelmed we didn’t want to risk ordering a dessert so we left the restaurant after quite a short time overall.
This restaurant would do well to better coordinate the serving of its alcohol and food such that it’s diners enjoy a slower and more enjoyable experience. We may well have ordered more wine and a dessert had our dinner not felt so rushed.
The food at Captain Moonlight is no more than adequate. We had the sense that the female Maître D was a little over it all

This was our second visit to Captain Moonlight and its move up a notch as it continues to provide excellent food in a stunning setting. We had the King Island scollops.....best I have had in years and the John Dory...perfect. The food is fresh, well prepared and all good value. Similarly, the wine list comes with some excellent regional options. The dining room has the best views along the beach and beyond. We made the journey from Lorne where nothing compares with Captain Moonlight. A special nights celebration where we had meet 50 years ago when the restaurant was a surf club dance. Thank you for helping us celebrate in style.
A terrific experience. We left highly satisfied after eating through a number of beautifully presented and tasteful dishes (calamari was a standout). Service was professional and welcoming - nothing was too much trouble. An experience we have shared with friends.
Sublime food, fantastic relaxed atmosphere and great service. The rib eye was an absolute standout.
