Since 1853, Captain Melville's has been serving locals and visitors of Melbourne with sumptuous and globally-inspired cuisine in its welcoming and friendly bar and restaurant. The salt and pepper squid with Sichuan pepper salt and sambal mustard and the nachos with avocado, salsa and coriander make sharable and vibrant starters. Some of Captain Melville's classic mains include the beer battered fish and chips with fresh lemon and tartar, the black angus rump steak with peppercorn jus and the Mac's burger beef patty topped with fried chicken, bacon, double cheese and chipotle mayo, all perfect with a beer. Vegetarian and vegan dishes, like the yellow dahl lentils in coconut sambal sauce and the quinoa and chickpea salad with smoky eggplant and hazelnuts, are as satisfying and tasty as meat-centric dishes.
Captain Melville's baked passionfruit cheesecake with tangy berry compote makes the perfect end to your meal.
i booked for 2 for 5 pm on the 30th march , delightful meal , service and relaxed country feel interior ,
Hands down the best chicken Chicken Parma out there!! Brought my mates out for Trivia Night and they absolutely loved it. Back soon! :)
Great meal and staff very attentive and helpful. We really enjoyed it.
Good venue with nice value menu and good beers on tap
Not impressed! I suggested Cpt Melville for lunch with a group of work colleagues.
When we got there it was packed at the bar - I guess people where ordering meals ? We did wait a while but it wasn't quick so I admit I jumped in and asked the guy behind the bar about our reservation.
I made the reservation about 2 hrs before but the bar staff said I hadn't and showed me a bit of paper that had reservation names written on it , my name wasn't on it so he dismissed me.
If I wasn't with work colleagues I would have walked out but I persisted and showed him my confirmation on my ph.
After serving quite a few other people at the bar he eventually showed us to a table in the bar section where I'd booked but was still really rude about it.
We ended up sitting in the dining area where the service was good so was the food (super noisy thought) Sorry but what's the point of offering bookings if you not going to keep up to date with them.
Everything else was great but your bar staff man let you down badly. I won't bring work colleagues here again and i wouldn't recommend it.
He might have been busy but there's no excuse for being rude to customers or for saying they lied about having a booking.
Always impressed by the way the kitchen and service staff handle large tables
We were happy with our meals, we all selected 3 different entree and each of us had different mains so we got to see and taste the variety there was and we loved all of them. The waitress was very nice and friendly she spoke clear and politely and memorized all our meals. We all said we would can't Wait to go again.
Great for trivia. Well set up. Good service from staff who changed me from a smelly table near the toilets to a central table. Tasty meals especially the lamb ragout and the special Parma for just $15 on our trivia night. Perfect ambience and table separation for trivia. An all-round good night out
Probably not the best place to conduct a business meeting over lunch, as the acoustics are bad and the venue was noisy.
Great local vibe to meet-up with Uni mates and friends to enjoy yummy food, drinks. Staff were confident and helpful.
Always great for a burger and craft beer lunch in the city
The booking was mismanaged and no table was available for our group of people. As we expected to have a shared dinner, the alternatively offered place close to the bar was not at all suitable.
consistently tasty and quick food. keep an eye out for the specials, they're worth a look, but the main menu fare is great.
A mix of good bar / pub meals with a fun place to eat with great rock music ambience
This was our second big group lunch at Captain Melville and everything was perfect. Fantastic menu, good options for everyone, lovely staff.
Very well organised with our big table booking - the food came out promptly and all together with no mix ups and they happily managed a few last minute additions on the day. Nice sunny atrium area, very friendly staff and affordable menu - was perfect for a large farewell lunch with work colleagues. The only thing I would change is the 'no split bills' rule as it's a bit stressful and impractical to coordinate correct change in cash for 20 people. I've found other venues seem to manage individual card payments without issue and it seems a reasonable customer service to offer given our increasingly cashless society. Despite this, I would definitely go there again for work team lunches.
great food in a great venue! lots of great beer on tap and the staff were really friendly.
The service was prompt & friendly, the food was delivered quickly, which happened to be important to us on this occasion, and the “Captain’s Burger” was better than a burger has any right to be! (Though it was pretty juicy, so be prepared :-)
I've been there several times, most of the time going to loch and key and bypassing captain Melville. This place is great though and not too busy on Sunday. Food was out on time and the guys are really friendly at the bar. It's pretty much the in between of pub and a restaurant. A lovely bar with great food
Great variety of simple yet really well executed meals. Had a couple of burger snobs with us who couldn't complain. I had the chicken burger which was great. Atmosphere was vibrant and welcoming and the staff were great.
We had our engagement at Captain Melville and go back on our date nights. We enjoyed it here more than where we had our wedding venue!
Went for trivia night which was lots of fun. But will be back for the food, ace staff and just generally great pub.
Great service combined with fresh and tasty pub grub made for an all round outstanding evening,
The food is always fantastic and the service is outstanding. Staff are very friendly and helpful.
Great section of vegan food which is hard to find in a pub.
the dining part of the night was very good and the food was alright. but as for the happy hour we ordered our drinks at 7:50pm and because it took the bartender until after 8 to put it through the cash register we had to pay full price. now the happy hour is great don't get me wrong $5 basics you cant really go wrong but when you are ordering like 10 drinks because you know the happy hour is ending and get smacked with full price that's a bit harsh especially since we ordered before 8pm. other than that was a great night.
Fantastic staff, great food and beer! Lots of people, so very friendly atmosphere.
Great place for groups. Our party of 11 was well looked after by the friendly staff. The food came out quickly, especially for the 11th member of the group who arrived later. The overall vibe of the group was very positive.
I loved the relaxed feel of this place – like a comfortable dining room in a friends home. I definitely would return to try more dishes.
Simple but great food with very friendly staff serving you.
The staff were very accomodating.
The food was amazing, the service was awesome, the beer was cold and the atmosphere/venue was great. The Captain's Burger was yum and it was a special too, so it was good value for money! There was a mix-up with one of the meals which meant that it was served much later than the rest of the group. As this was a work lunch, we had to rush to get through our meals slightly to get back to the office for other meetings. The waiter was extremely apologetic though and acknowledged that there had been a mix-up.
Very noisy upstairs for our recent lunch - in fact it was off putting as you couldn't hear the person next to you
Food was fantastic as was the service the noise would make me think twice before booking the upstairs room
Cozy little nook. Met up with Colleagues over lunch. Would surely recommend to others.
Great atmosphere !!!. We didn't have to wait long for our food and the Burgers were awesome!!
Great staff and ambience for a catch-up with friends
Friendly helpful staff. Excellent service. Great food and drink .
Good food, music a little noisy made it hard for conversation
Always great dining at Captain Melvilles! The food is fantastic - wagyu steak to die for, and very good value for money. We often come here as a group of 10-14 people for lunch and the service in the restaurant is always excellent. We've also had a number of 'after work drinks' nights in the front bar and upstairs on the balcony. There's a mix of funky rooms and spaces and it's has a great atmosphere.
Bar food only
great pub food, friendly service and v. helpful when we needed 'speedy' service for our work lunch.
Great funky atmosphere, very good service and the food was great. Loved the
venue and will defiantly return. Thanks
