Captain Baxter's new menu represents food that people want to eat by the beach; relaxed and casual dishes, with fresh and delicate flavours.
The seafood focused menu is overlayed with subtle Asian influences to create seasonally focused dishes that embrace Captain Baxter’s enviable location.
Most food are good, some just average. Spicy Calamari, typhoon prawn and baby cos salad with candied walnuts are my favourite. The hapuka curry was very average for the steep $49 price. The beach view was stunning from the 1st floor! Service was okay for a busy night. Entree come early but the main dishes took about 45 mins
Poor food. Too expensive. Staff under-trained and trying to oversell. Thought we'd give it a try but would not go back.
Great position, we had a table by the window overlooking St Kilda boardwalk and beach. I booked online which was an easy process, even when I had to change the booking. Our waiter was knowledgeable on the food which we appreciated. We were also topped up with water frequently which was also good. Everyone enjoyed the food which was excellent.
The team were extremely professional, attentive, kind and provided great service with a smile. I will be going back again very soon and recommending to everyone I can.
Its really a night club/restaurant so was pretty useless for catching up with friends .
The music was really loud , i really dint understand why they keep noise levels down until after dinner..
Then they can ramp it up as loud as want
Ok, not great. Our group found it a little noisy to talk over dinner.
Great food, impeccable service, and the view was second to none. Busy during Saturday dinner but we’ll worth a visit
It would be nice- for those who have booked a table for lunch or dinner- to have a table reserved outside if they would like to continue on and have drinks !
I booked a farewell dinner for 3 people andctge service was outstanding
from all staff.
We requested to move to a table with a view and we were pleaseantly surprised when they told us they could move us after 20 mins. I was dining with an overseas guest from the US where service from wait staff is key so she was very impressed.
I was really gratefull for the effort made by everyone their to make our night special especially Toby and the waitress from Pittsburgh (sorry l cant remember her name).
Also my other friend ordered a matini and it took a long time to come to our table so they didnt charge us.
We enjoyed our evening very much. The waiters went out of their way to make us feel welcome and comfortable. The food was very good, the view of the sunset over the ocean was outstanding. However, the noise from the bar made it almost impossible to hear a word of what the other one said and the same goes for the waiters. Everyone at the restaurant more or less shouted to each other, which just made the noise even worse. But, all together we had a great dinner and a good time.
A beautiful Christmas Eve early dinner spent with a fabulous view. We shared some entrees, tried the jug cocktails, main meals and lots of side. Everything was great. We had the perfect waitress serve us (Canadian blonde girl) we felt really relaxed and enjoyed everything.
We had the most fantastic waitress - engaging and bubbly
The ambience and venue is very good however the food is very average.
Average tasting food. I find their food is overpriced. I feel that they are understaffed as well. Hard to get attention from waiter/waitresses. The place is a little too noisy for my liking. Not a recommended place to celebrate anniversary.
New fit out and food is amazing
Came for lunch to check out the refit and loved it. The new look is great and the food and service were outstanding. We had table 46 right by the windows overlooking the beach :) Cocktail from the bar was excellent. Will definitely be back.
The dumplings were dry on top,
the chicken skewers were ok
the sword fish had a shattered shell in it which got into the source.
The potato salad was straight out of the frig and too cold.
It was expensive.
everything we have was very nice
The food was delicious & fresh with lots of greens, yet still felt quite decadent and flavoursome. I will definitely be back again with friends and family.
The only drawback was the music. It was fun and added to the atmosphere, but when you're sitting in the dining area on a Monday or Tuesday night for a date, you want to be able to hear each other speak. Sadly, the music was so loud we both wanted ear muffs.
Way to loud for a monday night in an empty restaurant
Asked them to turn it down and the wait staff assisted then the dj turned back up even louder playing 80's
He wasnt even born then . Needs a new job
Amazing views and ambience though the Yum Cha was atrocious; cheap tasting and non-authentic. Shame no one bothered to ask us how the meal was... Though the other meals looked way more appetising!
Always a pleasure. CB never disappoints. Looking to use the venue for future in our new business venture. Love this place!!!
Music was far too loud to have conversation over dinner, which was disappointing .. service was great and food was good
We loved Captain Baxter great food best view of the bay we definitely will be back.
Plenty of food in the Chef choice menu.
Fantastic wait staff and the kitchen were very accommodating of all of my dietary requirements. The waiter even had a list prepared of menu items suitable.
We came for lunch on a Sunday as captain Baxter had been recommended by friends. It turned out to be a hot, sunny day in St Kildas so the beach was packed and the restaurant and bar was heaving which meant the atmosphere was great, with a real buzz.. and we were told that the party was just starting! Lunch was great, we shared some tapas style pieces and one of the larger sharing plates, all of which was great quality and interesting twists on the dishes. A lot of seafood as to be expected, but lived up to expectations for us. Price wise it was about right, with enough of a range of drink options you could have something affordable or push the boat out if you so desired. Service did suffer a little as it was busier but all staff were friendly and helpful in general. Would certainly go back either for a group event or just as a couple, as the setting makes this a great place to enjoy a lively lunch or dinner.
Amazing place! Beautiful food and lovely staff. View of the ocean is exceptional. Decor is spot on!
My group of friends really enjoyed our night on the 28th December.
We had to change our booking time a couple of times and this was done without any effort.
On arrival we were looked after really well. I don't know her name, but she seemed to be a supervisor/team leader. She was really informative, friendly and remembered all our meal and drink orders without writing anything down....insane!
Brilliant customer service and yummy food.
We'll be back.
The venue and views were fantastic and the staff serving from the moment you walked in were friendly and obliging. Will definitely recommend and come again.
Awesome! the fish tacos were to die for!
The weirdest looking food I've ever seen & tasted at a restuarant.
* The meat was raw (yuk)!
* My dessert was micro small
* My cocktail drink was filled with 95% crushed ice and hardly any alcohol.
* the whole experiencw..was definitely not value for money.
Would not recommended.
Our party of 4 enjoyed the 5 course banquet. The chef obliging catered for one friend with a seafood allergy. Each course was unusual for us but delicious and the waiter competently introduced each dish. Even so, it would've been good to have a menu to refer back to!
It felt like a "Masterchef" experience!!!
Loved the food! Couldn't fault it.
Great food. Amazing cocktails. Will definitely be back!!!!
Food was amazing!! We had a great view and enjoyed our lunch immensely - my friends had not dined here before but will definitely be back.
love that place, although the menu was changed from last time I was there, it was still very nice the only downfall was the chips we ordered was way too salty!! couldn't finish it.
Great restaurant! Amazing views and delicious food
Fabulous outdoor deck, but you need to get there right on opening to join the stampede up the staircase to get a spot, even with a booking inside. Food was mostly good, mocktails great for summer. Service non existent, had to ask 3 times over 20 mins to get umbrella put up. And you need to Oder for food and drinks at bar..,no table service.
Could not fault the service or the food. It was fantastic, and we'll definitely be back! My son is allergic to egg and peanut and he was looked after so well by our waiter, Tom. Tom even organised a special dessert for him. Very, very impressed.
