Canal House Station
A little bit about Canal House… Melissa Hamilton and Christopher Hirsheimer are cooks who write about home cooking. In 2007 they founded Canal House, which includes a publishing venture and a culinary, photography, and design studio. Their cookbook Canal House Cooks Every Day received a James Beard Award, and their blog, Canal House Cooks Lunch, is followed by thousands of readers who find inspiration in what they cook up each day.
Canal House Station Café & Restaurant, their latest endeavor, makes the food that fills the pages of their cookbooks come to life for everybody to enjoy!
The Canal House Station - it really is heaven. Food is fantastic. People are lovely. Feels like home.
The best pancakes in the world, really. Like what all other pancakes are hoping to be when they grow up. We've been to breakfast/lunch here a few times before, but this was our second time going specifically for the pancakes. We brought our college-aged kids and their friends so that they would know what a perfect pancake is. Love the ambiance and friendly service as well! We'll be back, often. Not just have to make it to one of their Sunday Suppers...
Love this place from the care of the food served to the server these two women cooks excellent quality food and prepare and serve it with love!
Sunday dinner was so delicious and a great way to spend the afternoon lingering over multiple small courses. Highly recommended!
The food and service people were amazing but the food took too long between courses. We were there almost 2 1/2 hours. That’s too long for lunch. That being said, we will definitely go back.
Wonderful restaurant with warm ambience and delicious simple high quality food.
Very friendly staff - beautiful space - delicious food - easy to get to - what more could we want? a great experience - look forward to repeating it - SOON. thanks!
This was my third time here and the food, service and atmosphere are consistently excellent. The curated menu is full of fresh and seasonal ingredients, and while seemingly simple the presentation is elegant and the dishes always absolutely delicious! The exquisitely renovated space is warm and welcoming and the staff are always friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable.
I’ve been to Canal House 3 times—1 breakfast and 2 lunches. I cook and totally appreciate good quality food. Organic and sustainable if possible. All 3 visits have been exemplary. I’m spreading the word. I can’t think of a thing they should change. The architecture of the building is worth the visit and right along the Delaware beautiful. The wait staff are so wonderful and accommodating. I can’t say enough. Looking forward to next visit and maybe Sunday dinner. Thank you for a great restaurant.
If you are a fussy eater probably would not recommend this cafe as the menu is very limited. The dining area was very warm - almost uncomfortably so. Service was a bit slow and awkward. Food was absolutely delicious. Had the best French onion soup I ever tasted. The odd thing was we were first told they were out of soup then we were told they had one soup portion. My friend and I said we would split the one order. Two full bowls arrived which were the same portion size as others we saw. Had we known we would get full portions, we would have adjusted our sandwich order. when there are only 4 items on the menu I would expect enough should have been made for a full house. I realize it’s sometimes difficult to judge, but we did have reservations and drove an hour to eat here. The food was excellent despite these blips I would go again.
Fantastic experience. the food is amazing and just perfect in every way!
Our Sunday dinner was over the top. We were introducing our friends to the Canal House restaurant because our friends had introduced us to the Canal House cookbooks. The wait staff were delightful and Christopher and Melissa were very personable. Each course was not only delicious but also a work of art as well. We can’t wait until we return.
Everything about Canal House Station is wonderful. The setting is beautiful, the food is locally sourced and delicious. The service is excellent; everyone is friendly. The open kitchen is amazing to watch: it is quiet and smooth running. Melissa and Christopher are delightful and willing to chat about the food and the restaurant. After our first visit, we were ready to go back the next day. A true delight!
I love good food. And cooking. Having lived many years in New York City, I have gotten around. I have enjoyed some really wonderful bites, mostly from non-rated places rich in ethnic diversity of flavor and ingredients. Still, restaurants most always disappoint. Canal House Station is THE exception. Every detail, and I mean EVERY detail, is considered, planned, and executed perfectly. From the delicate thin-walled drinking glasses and hand-chopped ice, to the meticulous plating and perfectly seasoned food, Melissa Hamilton and Christopher Hirscheimer have gotten it right. Over the weekend, I brought a dear friend for pancakes. Each bite was a revelation, airy and light with just a touch of sweetness, balanced by the salted Irish butter and real maple syrup. The bacon was thick and crisp, caramelized deliciousness. I will not make or eat pancakes anywhere else. Period. Today, I brought my wife and parents for lunch. My mother, who is beyond “picky,” had the eggplant with chickpea purée. The eggplant glistened, and was roasted to tender and creamy perfection, the crisp and shiny skin giving it textural contrast. Flakes of Maldon salt intensified the flavors in all the right ways. The purée was silky and smooth. Grilled sweet peppers, plentiful sourdough toast, olives and lemon rounded out the dish. I started with a chicken stock-based soup, a hearty bowl with cauliflower, potato, chickpeas, cilantro and light curry. Again, perfectly seasoned, balanced with salt, yummy chicken fat, and brightness. Then I had the pate, two generous slices of the most flavorful and delightfully textured meaty bits surrounding a creamy and unctuous center. Simply served with toast, a lightly dressed green salad, cornichons, olives and Dijon mustard. What more can I say? Oh, and the servers are lovely. How lucky we are to have this gem in our backyard.
Really enjoyed Canal house. Both the food and the atmosphere were memorable. Definitely plan to go back again.
Another remarkable Sunday supper, including a delightful Bellini with scrambled eggs and salmon “caviar” as a first course in a four course meal expertly served by the presiding waiter and Matre d’ , Nash. No better way to spend Sunday afternoon
Cool vibe in a renovated train station. We took a few friends to Canal House for the prix fixe, 5-course Sunday “supper.” The food was moderately sophisticated and tasted great. My wife had breakfast there on a different day and she said the omelette was the best she ever tasted. Service and decor were excellent.
The ladies created the perfect brunch of corned beef hash and poached eggs. Don’t expect a lot of choice...but do expect perfection.
I can only write about my food experience for their Saturday breakfast, as I went for their endless pancakes but I highly recommend going for any pancake lover out there, plus you get a side of bacon, all for $13. The pancakes are buttermilk with Irish butter melted on top, can't beat it. They are fantastic! The place is small, you may sit with other people at a large table but the people are friendly and the service was great. I highly recommend and I will be trying other items on their menu when I get a chance, but I would recommend checking the menu and hours of operation before visiting, as they are different during the week and weekends.
Beautiful, atmospheric setting by the river in a lovingly restored train station. Open kitchen where you can see Melissa and Christopher working their magic. The staff is friendly and helpful. The food is perfect!! This was my second visit in 1 week and I’ll be back soon!!! I particularly recommend the Sunday super...12-4 it revives the greatly missed tradition of a leisurely Sunday afternoon feast in warm surroundings with great conversation. It’s pre fix set menu multiple course...my favorite because I didn’t have to choose.
After reading rave review in WSJ, we made a reservation and were completely "wowed" by our experience. We had the "Sunday night dinner" and every course was wonderful. Preparation used the highest ingredients, presentation was beautiful and service was great. We are already planning our return.
We've never had a better meal, absolutely everything is done to perfection
The wonderful ladies of the Canal House Station have created a gorgeous space. The chefs in the open kitchen are a pleasure to watch. The food is elegant and delicious. We feel so lucky to have this gem in our neighborhood. Can't wait to become a regular.
One of the finest, freshest and best meals in a long while. Simple dishes yet all perfect. Perfect green leafy lettuce with the perfect vinaigrette- just like in Paris. Generous serving of pate. Omelette was fluffy and filling. Fried chicken sandwich was crunchy, juicy and again, perfect. Avocado soup was creamy with a hint of chili oil - delicious. Unfortunately I can’t have gluten so could not sample the bread but it looked delicious - thick and hearty. It is hard to get fruit for dessert these days but thank you thank you – the perfect peaches and cantaloupes. Sophisticated, urbane country vibe. Open kitchen with the masterful Melissa and Christopher at the helm. Worth the drive and can’t wait to go back.
Went for “Sunday Supper” lovely table, delicious food, but we waited close to an hour for main course with not to much staff concern. When we asked about food told it was being plated then more waiting. When I reconfirmed reservation I mentioned to gentlemen who called it was our 40th wedding celebration dinner. This was never acknowledged throughout our meal for 4. I was disappointed and note you will be charged for coffee in this price fixed meal. Thanks for reading
The omelet was incredible!!! Homemade jam, delicious bread! Yummy.
I came to the Canal House Station on a Saturday with a few my family and friends, and we absolutely loved it here. We had the bottomless pancakes, which were so light and fluffy, and I would’ve had more if it weren’t for a full stomach. The whole atmosphere was pleasant and I especially loved the open kitchen. I’ve only been there once, but I’m already planning for the next time there.
This was one of the most amazing lunches I have had! There were three of us and we were lucky enough to be seated inside next to the kitchen. The ingredients are all locally sourced and could not be fresher. The avocado and corn soup was superb! I am not a lover of kale, but we ordered and shared and the kale salad was delicious. I have been a subscriber to Melissa and Christoper’s Canal House cookbook series and their Canal House Cooks Lunch e-mail for years. They took time out to chat with us after our meal and were delightful. The restaurant setting is wonderful. Don’t miss this gem!!
We sat at a long table, one of two in the kitchen area. The breakfast menu is VERY limited- An omelet, yogurt, and maybe one other item.
Lunch had more offerings. I chose roasted eggplant, my companion-the omelet. The food was delicious.
It was the quietest kitchen/dining experience ever. To the point that it somehow felt awkward, as if we were intruding.
We will try it again, the servers were attentive and pleasant.
You can expect the best of every season here!
After having the plum tart for dessert I had to seek out the book with the recipe because the crust was incredible. Service was pleasant and well versed on the menu.
Will return soon!
Terrific food, wonderful space. Go, you won't be disappointed.
Melissa and Christopher have not missed a detail with the new Canal House Cafe, both with the delicious food and the design of the space. Bowls of produce and flowers throughout compliment the crisp white shelving and service ware in the communal table dining/kitchen area. The other rooms have retained some of the old rail station details, but updated with gorgeous wallpaper and art.
Our lunch was seasonal and delicious (corn soup and perfect summer tomatoes "all dressed up") and my husband loved his fried chicken sandwich (fried to order).
The proprietors were welcoming and warm
We are just sorry Canal House Cafe isn't closer, however, we will be back!
Food: Innovative and delicious, Kudos to the chef(s) for the cougeres, corn and lobster soup, chicken and grits
Ambiance: One of the most tasteful and well-appointed dining rooms in the area.
There are a few places which I have gone back to on multiple occasions, especially in as short time period of just 6 weeks. The Canal House Cafe is one of those unique places. We have taken all of our best friends to it and all have raved. The incredible quality of the food and the nature by which the food is prepared- fresh , hand selected local ingredients (with the exception of the Sullivan Street Bakery breads from NYC) are perfectly matched with whatever accompanies the dish. When the bill arrives you might think there is a mistake and there should be an extra 0 at the end. The value of your meal is unquestionable. Am already planning my next visit which will not be soon enough.
Thoughtful, attentive service and delicious food. They made my friend feel special on her birthday. Beautiful place.
My husband and I and another couple had an outstanding meal at Canal House Station. We had the Sunday fixed menu. Every aspect of the experience was wonderful. The host who sat us, the waiter who served us and the beautifully restored station house all led up to an excellent meal which utilized fresh seasonal ingredients. The meal, service and ambiance equaled those we've had at some of our other favorite restaurants such as Gotham Bar & Grill and Gramercy Park Tavern in Manhattan and 90 Acres in Peapack. We'll be back. All four of us would highly recommend a visit!
We've enjoyed the Sundy "supper' twice now, and each time the fixed menu included very fresh and local ingredients (chanterelles, local tomatoes, local blueberries). The dining room space is best described as casual, imaginative elegance and the servers are exceptionally friendly and knowledgable. The whole Canal House restaurant experience is just a class act!
The place was outstanding! I know folks who love the books, of which I know nothing. But I do know that the food was delicious and insanely reasonable for what it is.
The food was amazing. So many vegetarian choices - can't thank you enough!!!
Fresh. Thoughtful. Simple. Perfect.
