Cafe Opera - InterContinental Sydney
This was our 4th visit to Cafe Opera. Food was very nice as usual but we were disappointed to not have the seafood included in the buffet as on our previous visits.
Service slow. Good just average Good quick meal after having been on the road 10 hours
Buffet with a good selection of dishes with a particular focus on seafood. A pity that diners are not allowed to connect to the Wi-Fi network unless they are also staying at the hotel.
Finding a crowd waiting to enter as we arrived seemed unruly and certainly not expected. The service was chaotic at best from then on. The food had some good parts but overall was well below what we had expected for the cost. Of particular concern was that the Balmain Bugs tasted as though they were old and dry and the cooked prawns were in their shell which required difficult work to get a taste of the prawn inside. I won't go back.
Went there during school holidays on a rainy Thursday afternoon. The overall experience was awesome. There was a wide selection of seafood, salads and deserts. Apart from the seafood they had a well cooked juicy roast lamb which the kids loved. The staff were well spoken, attentive and very polite. The table was constantly cleared, the glasses were kept filled and the overall atmosphere was just amazing. Certainly going back.
The fresh seafood was not of the quality we were expecting. Oysters small, Bugs and crabs not that good. We also ordered cocktails and one had to be asked for 3 times and then they delivered the wrong one
We booked for 8pm & the food as on previous occasions was of a very high standard. The layout of the Cafe Opera is well done there is ample space between tables & enough room to move around & select the items that you wish to taste. The roasts are the very best I have ever had & the Seafood is absolute top shelf. The only lacking aspect is as it gets close to 10pm there is a bit of a hurry up put on you this should be a little more casual.
Charming lunch to celebrate becoming a four star hotel
The vulcan hotel 500 Wattle Street Ultimo
Been going there for the last 20 years
Always a treat for a special occasion and food quality never lets me down- enjoyed a lovely Anniversary dinner
We were looking forward to the seafood buffet for our 12th year wedding anniversary. We visit as a special occassion treat. The main reason for choosing this restaurant was for the lobster which my husband loves. Unfortunately, the night we attended (13th Jan) there was no Lobster Mornay. We enjoyed the rest of the buffet however it did put a significant dent into what was nice dinner.
Like other reviewers here, I received a confirmation from Opentable but when we showed up, the restaurant didn’t have my booking. Even though we were the very first people to show up at opening time, the hostess said all the tables inside were booked and offered to sit us outside the restaurant (in what is essentially a giant hallway overlooking the indoor courtyard, which lacks the feel of a restaurant. I guess at least it was easy to hear each other!).
The waitress was very attentive - changed the finger bowls multiple times and regularly cleared plates throughout the whole meal. And the food was excellent - we had two types of crab, mussels, oysters, three types of prawns (sadly we were too full of seafood to try the delicious-looking hot buffet on offer) not to mention the salad selection, dessert buffet and sorbet machine. At $69pp for so much well-prepared seafood it was great value and we had a wonderful night, despite being sat in the hallway. Would definitely return - but will call to confirm the booking!
WE enjoyed the area and decor of Intercontinental Hotel.. The staff we had had serve us were very friendly.. Selection of food was quite good. Staff serving cut meat almost threw it on your plate.. WE felt like telling him to go to a job he likes.. The bubbly was very expensive per glass. Thought was included, but found out that was from Friday. I would go again, but only for special occasion. too expensive for a regular basis. Yes, would recommend to friends. Christmas decor was lovely as was the hotel.. A very nice day eating there. Surprised we were told we had to leave by a certain time.. consistently. Odd..
I did my booking through opentable and received the confirmation, but when I reached to the cafe, they told me that there is no reservation under my name. The place was almost fully booked but the opera cafe staff were helpful and secured a table for me on the last minute.
Love love loved it, took my family out for our monthly theme dinner and i have to say the service from when we walked in till when we walked out was exceptional, the food was just delish and to make our night even better they bought out a cake and candle just for my daughter. Highly recommended.
Overall it was a good experience but the service wasn't too great has sat down maybe 20 minutes before someone actually service is water, maybe she too busy and forgot is again . ??
Great place. High quality and excellent service. Food unfortunately was let down by their oysters and prawns which are normally first rate.Everything else was fantastic though.Highly recommend.
Comfortable. safe, friendly and easy to use
Food was acceptable much of it felt like it was breakfast and high tea . Nowhere comparable to melbournes Langham Melba buffet.
Considering on our day of visit there're only three staff on the floor including the manager, the service is attentive. Both our waitresses are very friendly and always keep a smiling face. The buffet is value for money; the seafood (both the Rocks oysters and the prawns) are of good quality. The sparkling included is Bimbadgen from Hunters Valley. It's not the top of the range but it's of good palate and pretty drinkable.
I haven't been to The Intercontinental for many years and was pleasantly surprised that the quality of food and level of service remain at the same high standard
Great value and an extensive range of foodDesserts were excellent and prawns and oysters were delicious
An excellent, friendly, quiet, sophisticated venue with the finest food, good wines and a place where the service is unobtrusive and complete. It is a great value place to meet for social and business discussions.
fresh and reasonable selection of food -
We hadn't been to Cafe Opera for some time and decided to revisit. It is a beautiful restaurant. The buffet selection was a bit smaller than I recall from our previous visit some years ago. There was a wide selection of food available generally of a good quality. Coffee was an additional cost.
Did not provide enough Alaskan king crabs.
Was disappointed as the photo on the hotel site shows crayfish and there was no sign of crayfish, I suspect they might come out for Friday and Saturday nights, rather than Sunday. There was a sign for Balmain bugs but none in sight, and the oysters are truly the smallest I have seen in my 60 odd years!!! underwhelming overall. The sweets very ordinary! The waiters were fine, all courteous, staff all fine, but catering not good. The wine was good, but terribly overpriced.
One the plus side, the environment is nice and service is really good. One the negative side, food quality is average. There was no sashimi. Oysters was really tidy and didn't look fresh and had lot of broken shell in it. Prawn were big but may be imported because it didn't taste like Australia tiger prawn.Sometimes there are long queue around the food.Dessert was nice though. Cakes were good.
Booked the verandah and was confirmed in a callback. On Arrival We were told that the verandah was fully booked, nonsense,it was empty. This has happenned twice before this year.At the carvery a surly chef dropped one slice of beef on my plate and turned his back,no jus or gravy offered. The same happened to the lass behind me who asked for more.To finish ordered coffee & ports. The port arrived,no coffee,20 minutes later reminded staff. On arrival I knocked over my port,no replacement offered.Alan
I've dined here on many occasions (lunch and dinner), so I know what to expect. The experience didn't disappoint. There could be more seafood at dinnertime, including fresh sashimi in the Japanese section.More seasonal fruit (not the canned variety) would be nice, eg strawberries, grapes, kiwifruit. The dessert selections hardly vary. I would love to see tiramisu and creme brulee on offer one day.
I felt the variety & quality of food had deteriorated since my last visit in 2014. Whilst the service was excellent, the food quality was not the high standard previously enjoyed at Café Opera - especially the hot food dishes offered on the day. I hope this comment is accepted by the Hotel Intercontinental as constructive criticism.
Excellent service. Food quality very good except for the hot fish dish which seemed a little over-cooked & dry. Seafood and dessert excellent. Sushi also very nice. We went for the 5:30-7pm deal Saturday, plenty of time for family of four to enjoy, cheaper deal but still a little bit pricey. Hotel car park too dear, found car park nearby much cheaper, $15. Should offer car park deal to diners.
Wonderful ambiance, wonderful service, food amazing highly recommend!
Very nice environment for dining with friends and work mates. Highly recommend for special occasions too.
