The place itself is nice and well kept, the food is mediocre.

I've eaten here before and enjoyed it, but unfortunately on this occasion was left disappointed. My asparagus hollandaise starter was very tasty but the sauce was quite congealed. And the chicken, bacon, avocado and parmesan salad was very unappetising. Dumped on a small plate (visually unappealing) with brown avocado, chewy croutons and also an egg, which we weren't expecting (but no problem). Dressing wasn't mentioned on the menu, but seemed to be a Caesar dressing which just made everything taste fishy. The lettuce was very fresh and tasty though. We tried to enjoy it, but in the end decided to leave the salads and mentioned how disappointed we were to the waiter, who then got the Manageress, who then almost told us off for not having let them know sooner?! She was very defensive, but did take the salads off the bill. A real shame, as this is a lovely place with a nice atmosphere - and so perfect when going to the theatres either side.

We chose Café Monico for a bit of dinner and a catch up. I have to say that it is very good value and it isn't very often that you can get two courses and a carafe of wine and a cocktail for under £40. It is a good, steady and dependable place and I hope it does well.

The setting, atmosphere and ambiance are superb. From one side of our table was the beautiful interior which has a traditional, turn-of-the-century sophistication and is very welcoming. To the other side was massive windows on the front of the restaurant looking out over Shaftesbury Avenue making it a perfect place to people watch from and soak in the city vibes.
The service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing, just a perfect balance.
As for the food it was enjoyable with no specific criticisms of the courses themselves. I personally found it just fell shy of expectations and did not meet the same standards set by the sophisticated, chic surroundings.

Amazing service and food. We were having a reunion of girls from school and hadn’t seen each other in 25 years. Thanks for a great experience

After being recommended by a friend i can honestly say I have never been so disappointed. A long wait for food when the restaurant wasn’t busy, when the food did arrive the presentation was nothing short of embarrassing, small plain dishes, no thought for presentation, followed by a taste of pure blandness. Service wasn’t much better, I’m sure the staff were playing hide and seek! I will never recommend or visit again. Massive disappointment.

Had a pre-theatre dinner before heading next door to the Gielgud Theatre. NIce atmosphere. Had the set menu (3 courses for £21) which we thoroughly enjoyed.

A lovely cafe with great atmosphere however the food is rather average. We had the al a carte rather than the pre-theatre menu. Beef bourguignon was a really a beef stew, no sign of onions, lardons or mushrooms. Salted caramel chocolate truffles were very rich which was lovely however they arrived at the table still frozen. The meal wasn't expensive so I suppose we got what we paid for. In short, the food seemed to have been cooked without love.

Superb location on Shaftesbury Avenue, booked this for wedding anniversary meal, we were seated upstairs at window seat which was great, ervice and ambiance all good. The food was good although desert was a little disappointing.

This is a really good pre or post theatre place. Food has some decent choices and is well priced for central London. Bright inside and great sitting upstairs. Service was quite good, busy and so did have to chase the bill, but then it was, as I mentioned busy and we weren't in a total rush. We arrived earlier than expected, but were seated and stayed a long time and were not asked to leave the table, which is a big thing towards my positive view on service overall and atmosphere. I would go again, decent food and drinks, atmosphere and service, against a lot of quick in and out chains or overly expensive, hyped restaurants in theatreland.

Great ambience and service spoiled by less than average food. Shared a calamari starter which was fine. Followed by cheeseburger which was unacceptable at a £15 price tag. Burger bun was stale and meat was overcooked and dry and did not smell very fresh. Vegetable burger was tasteless. Did pass comments to waiter but got no response from management. Disappointing.

Ideal pre-theatre dinner. Pleasant environment, fun looking down from the upper level watching the cocktails being prepared. Good value for money.

Lovely restaurant, good food, all of it was quite salty which I didn't mind but it was noticeable. Staff were lovely but seemed quite busy/short staffed so you had to chase them up for wine/water etc a fair bit. I would still go back though, good location.

My husband and I went for a meal here before seeing a show at a local theatre. The service was very good and all the food very well presented and good tasting. They were very amenable to a few changes to various items on the menu and made us feel very welcome.

Lovely food, great view of passers by from window seat. excellent location for many theatres. Cocktail was good but don’t like London prices, up north costs £3 less.
Overall would definitely come hear again.

Lovely pre-theatre meal. Four of us had a great pre-theatre meal early on Saturday. Restaurant was buzzing, service was attentive, friendly and efficient.
Food was good - a great start to the evening.

Very well situated for the theatre district, but despite that a lovely venue with delicious food and friendly, helpful staff. We ate from the pretheatre menu which was good value, with a limited but excellent choice. Good selection of wines at average prices. Staff were friendly and helpful, and when a course arrived which was not warm enough, dealt with this well, returning a fresh, steaming hot portion. A good choice and would return.

Pre theatre meal. Nice table upstairs overlooking the bustling London streets. Good choice on the menu-I had the steak tartare which was nice but should have had some Tabasco to spice it up a bit. But fresh and good helping. My friend had the linguini which looked nice. No puds but they looked nice. Glass of wine each and a coffee/tea...olives to start....all for a little over £60 for 2 which in London is reasonable for decent food. (spent the same at an ASK Italia recently and the food was rubbish!) Ambience was lovely but service attentive and didn’t have to wait for anything. However we also felt relaxed. Would def go back for pre theatre.

My steak was overcooked. They did offer a free desert. However, it was rock hard as it was frozen. Very nice setting but its a shame about the food.

Style is French neighbourhood brasserie - on Shaftesbury Av. Excellent pre theatre dining with friendly and super fast staff. Ask for a table upstairs so that you can watch the mixologists in action below - theatre in itself. Some small shortcuts to presumably ensure fast service - Nicoise salad elements were all very chilled and obviously straight from the fridge, lemon tart was over large and heavy on the pastry. All that said, we had good simple tasty food pleasantly served and well priced for tourist central in London.

A great find for the area, the food was good and not too expensive (TdH with 2/3 course options), and the choice of wines and cocktails complimented it well. The décor is very Parisian brassiere, giving the whole place a feel of sumptuousness, without the expense of more 'upmarket' places such as Zedel. And it's location makes it perfect for pre or after theatre eating.

Lovely designed bistrot in the very heart of London (2min from Picadilly) with great atmosphere, selected menu with fish and meat plates at reasonable price. Food was good and service kind and fast. Cocktails seemed great too. Recommended!

We've been eating at Café Monico since it opened and the consistency of great food and service remains just as good as it did on it's first day.

We tend to go on a Sunday because of their Sunday roast dinners - they are delicious, especially the roast beef - it's the best Sunday roast in London! Cocktails are always good too, as is the wine selection. Highly recommend to anyone who loves great food and great service

Despite the great decor and good atmosphere, the food was really bland and quite disappointing. There are so many restaurants in London that serve delicious food without it necessarily being super expensive, that this restaurant really pales in comparison.

Usually love Cafe Monico, but didn't realise that there was live music on Tuesday which made conversation difficult. We were seated upstairs because we wanted some quiet, but unfortunately service up there was very slow. Also, the mussels (usually yummy) were overcooked and shriveled. So, avoid on Tuesdays!

I have eaten at Cafe Monaco many timns and have always had a good meal. This time three of us had the duck which was simply inedible and we all sent it back. The quality of all the other food was fair and certainly not as good as previous times. A great shame since the waitress who looked after us was first class and I have always loved the design and feel of the place. Wont be going back for a while - London is awash with some very good restaurants to choose from so please cafe Monaco get your mojo back.

The menu was rather uninspiring and when we ordered minestrone, what came out was a tomato base with fairly disappointing veggies - almost like from a can! The sea bass was ok, but was too oily for my liking. The bread basket wasn’t fresh bread... but the ambience is nice and the restaurant is in a good area, although I recall it being tastier the first time I went when it first opened.
