Butcher and the Farmer
A TOP TRAMSHEDS RESTAURANT
The unique design of the Tramsheds location allows diners to pick and choose from numerous restaurants within a small space, but once you try the dishes on offer at Butcher and the Farmer, it will be a challenge to go anywhere else.
1 main meal out of 5 ordered didnt arrive...staff apologetic and raced to get it to the table...arrived as we were all finishing our mains...cut into the salmon and it was raw, really raw...again raced to sort it out...main meal arrived and they ate by themselves. 3 x Pork spit roast specials turned up, cold...They gave us our deserts for free to apologise...nice gesture but we wont be going back.
The servings were too large for such rich food. The service was good.
Good food and great venue for a group celebration. Service slow and intermittent.
The restaurant itself is a little noisy however quite nice ambience. We had breakfast arriving at 10am on a Sunday and there was a group of 8 of us, although we ordered coffees in a staggered fashion not all at once. The waitress was professional. Things that went wrong with our order. 1. One round of coffees were served cold. 2. Coffees took quite a long time to arrive, twice. 3. Tea did not arrive at all. Perhaps if they had another person assisting to make the tea and coffees things would run more smoothly in the morning rush. 4. Salt & Pepper shakers did not work. After receiving instruction from waitress on how to get the salt shaker going. I tried again but in the end just left it. Other people complained and we got one that worked. We wanted to enjoy it and the waitress did do her best and remained polite however too many little things went wrong for us to come back. Breakfast menu was also quite limited although bacon was yum.
I was worried when I booked and saw all the comments about insufficient air con, however we had a lovely time in the tram which we mostly had to ourselves with no overheating. A couple of small problems - we were not given cutlery and after trying to wave someone down to get some, we just got it ourselves. I don't mind doing that at a cafe but it was a bit annoying for a nice restaurant. The bottle of wine we ordered to have with dinner only showed up after we'd almost finished eating (again, we had trouble trying to find someone to ask). The food was spectacular. The service was friendly but at times lacking. We had a really lovely evening and will definitely come back.
Got a early seating around 6pm, by 7pm the venue was filling up fast. food was great, service was great. A little expensive. but all and all a great place to eat. Would/will come again.
Stale bread and just average food quality - nothing special
The food and service were fantastic, however the one thing all restaurants in this precinct need is effective air conditioning. Whilst it was unseasonably hot, we were sweating for the entire meal as was our poor waiter.
The 500g wagyu was outstanding! Probably the best steak I have had in a long while and that's saying something because I eat a lot of steak all over the place. The air con in the whole tram sheds is a disaster, while Butcher and The Farmer have air con it still struggles given the entire building was poorly designed to keep air moving.
Staff, location and entrees were fantastic. The steak tartare and salmon carpaccio were flavoursome. The sides need to be worked on though - the heirloom tomatos was a very disappointing size. Mains were OK
Overall a great experience, though the heat was a little unbareble. I understand the limitation with air conditioning due to the open plan of the restaurant.
Like most in Sydney, it's not very often that you are impressed by a dining experience however recent cocktails and dinner at The Butcher and the Farmer was one of those rare exceptions that exceeded all expectations!
I've never been so animated while waxing lyrical around the water cooler on Monday when regaling our previous afternoon/evening experience at this restaurant to work colleagues.
There were so many positives that I pretty much exhuasted and monopolised all discussions that created such a buzz with my colleagues that I'm sure they are arranging a visit with their family and friends in the near future.
Its hard to put a finger on exactly why I am so impressed with The Butcher and the Farmer, could it of been the casual yet attentive service, the rustic yet modernistic ambiance of the restaurant and bar area or the most amazing foods and cocktails, oh the cocktails, please try a Moscow Mule or Hemmingway Daiquiri.... just to die for.
The mixture of nationalities of restaurant staff was entertaining, management have selected a varied skill set that just compliemented the overall dining experience, with no request being too difficult to accommodate... for us it was deciding to stay at the bar to enjoy our entrees then to move to a table for mains ... but we changed tables several times for comfort and accessibility... no problems...
Staff had an excellent understanding of the delightful and comprehensive menu and described in detail tastes, presentation and complimentary wines to accommpany ... different steaks ordered, different red wines offered to compliment ... you just rarely get that level of detail unless its at one of Sydney high end signature restaurants, where you'd expect that level of detail at.
Have banged on to anyone who'd listen since our visit on Sunday ... I've been ringing around friends to see what they are doing on Saturday night ... because it's off to The Butcher and the Farmer....
Quality ingredients with not a great deal done to them , beautifully presented .Service is the best in Sydney in particular our hostess Bianca was fantastic and is a real asset to the restaurant and nothing was too much trouble, we will be back.
Food was good without being great. Air-conditioning was ineffective and we were absolutely boiling hot. It is very expensive and I don't think great value. Just a piece of rib eye for $39. Chips, salad etc all extra. Its not that special.
Actually disappointed. It presents as a great place for families but its not priced accordingly. The mix is all wrong.
We had a lovely lunch here on Friday - the food was lovely and the service was excellent. The steak and pie of the day and deserts were all very good. We will definately go back here again.
This is the second time I've been here. Both times the food and wine havd been great, but the service a little off. The bathrooms are outside the restaurant in the main Tramsheds area, which I find annoying.
The servings are a good size, you won't go hungry!
We were a group of 6, its a good spot for a get together.
Service was lacking, food delivery was too staggered which made things awkward.
Food value and service at little under whelming - I did enjoy the ribs and pavlova!
It was ok the air conditioning or lack of was a killer on a warm night everyone at the table (7) were perspiring and couldn't wait to get out of the restaurant..
Food was ok but nothing to really want to make you rush back!
Dined at Farmer and the Butcher early on a Friday evening.
As a party of 7 we ordered quite a large selection of dishes.
Of these only the sides and vegetables we befitting the price and expectations of this venue.
All proteins were cooked terribly. The calamari was overcooked, as were the pork and fennel sausages. A salmon carpaccio was far too salty.
A wagyu rump was not given the time to rest in the kitchen and when it came out one of our party (a chef) suggested we leave it til last to carve. Lucky we did-after at least 15min it was medium to well done (the kitchen had suggested medium), and still quite dry.
Service from the junior staff was great and attentive. Senior staff were uninterested at best.
Overall an extremely disappointing experience-such a shame that such well sourced meat is not cooked properly and given the respect it deserves.
At the least the name does not mislead. The vegetables came from a farm and the meat was absolutely butchered by the kitchen before it touched our plates.
Fantastic, hearty food. Great quality produce served well. Highly recommended
Love the train, the juices and the meat but the potatos were undercooked and there is no gluten free option available.
I was very impressed by how tasty the food was, not to mention the service was excellent also. I will definitely be recommending this place to my friends and family.
Very delicious food and friendly staff. The wine we choose went well with our meal. Will dine there again.
We went to Butcher and the Farmer on a busy Saturday night for my partners' 30th birthday. The staff were lovely, although we did wait a while for our drinks orders to be taken and brought out, and then again for our meal orders to be taken, but we were all having a lot of fun talking and our waiter was lovely so it was actually fine.
The staff were all super polite and helpful, and there were a few issues with our food which they recitified really quickly (some sides were missed, and below).
The only gripe I had, was that I ordered a Flat Iron steak, because I've never had that cut before and I wanted to try it. Unfortunately, it was FULL of gristle, like it was in every single bit I cut because it ran through the middle as well as across the steak in sections and I was only able to eat about half of it. When I brought it to the manager's attention she was very apologetic, saying that the cut is known for that, and took it off our bill which was really great and I appreciated it.
My only suggestion would be that staff need to be mindful of this in future, to let diners know this if they order it, as it was really disappointing watching everyone around me eat delicious and tender cuts like the Rib Eye and I was sawing through a gristly hunk of meat!
The tea was luke warm and very strong (like it had been sitting brewing for a long time and just poured into a tea pot when someone orders). Might want to see how your serve this for future? Otherwise everything was perfect.
We went to Butcher and the Farmer for my husbands birthday dinner. The food was amazing, wonderful service, great wine menu, and they went above and beyond my expectations to make my husband feel special for his birthday. We will definitely be going back and bringing friends!
The food was excellent and service good, but it's summer and there's no air-con. We were very hot, sitting near the bar, and I had to send a glass of red wine back because "room temperature" was too warm. You need to sort out the air-con in summer. Couldn't sit outside as it was too windy the night we went. Loved the short ribs.
Good food and service but airconditioning on a very hot night didn't quite do the job. Otherwise worth a visit.
Outstanding food, particularly the ribs. Service, and especially drinks service, is very random and slow. Outdoor tables are great for sunset watching, but the tables at the side around the corner are not recommended as the wheelie bins from the kitchen get dragged past constantly.
Second visit and it still impresses. Food is amazing. Will be going back for sure.
We were very disappointed in the quality of the food.
It is a great location, and a large space. it was very noisy and on top of people chatter they had music playing at 12pm mid week. not sure that helped with the noise level. food was good, slightly expensive for what you get when you have to add sides to a main meal. but i would recommend it. they were very good in regard to diary allergies. which is always great to see
I really enjoyed lunch at the Butcher and the Farmer, good honest simple food with a twist. Really attentive staff and excellent coffee made this place a winner and I will be returning soon!
Great meats, but like most places in Australia you should order it to be cooked a grade less than you would have to in The Americas or Europe. E.g. If you want medium-rare order rare.
I think that this is a cultural thing. I only know of one Australian restaurant (in Hobart) that uses the same cooking times as the rest of the Western World.
I don't normally leave reviews but this time it's a must. We picked this restaurant for nye as we heard it was child friendly. I must say everything was amazing. We really can't complain about anything. Everything was great, food and service were fantastic. We were all very impressed and it was great to find a place on such a big night that didn't have a set menu and prices were not changed due to the occasion.
This was my second visit. The first visit food was much better then the second. The lamb split roast was a little dry and disappointing. Maybe a nice rich sauce would have change my opinion. Secondly the beef burger was a let down. The pork ribs was fantastic as usual but quite expensive for what you get. It doesn't specify that it was a meaty half rack (most of the dish have quantity). Would also recommend the lamb cutlets, the Baby Beetroot & Kale Salad, Smoked Beef Short Ribs would do with pepper sauce. The kids menu was excellent, salmon was a hit and so was the mini steak. The drinks were great and a big hit with my group too.
Food was excellent, atmosphere was great but air con/air flow could be improved - it was very warm when we went and a bit stifling with the lack of air flow.
Unf our experience soured at the end. It was a birthday celebration and while the birthday girl was in the bathroom, the waiter asked one of the party if they could bring a dessert for her. Lovely gesture and when it was brought to the table, a few waiters approached and sang happy birthday. All good. What was not so good was the fact that the restaurant added that dessert onto the bill. The dessert wasn't ordered, it was offered. A big difference! Really poor customer experience. It's the reason why none of the party of 12 will ever return to the restaurant, despite the delicious food...
Fantastic meal and service - we'll go back with friends soon!
Been here once before. This visit was giving the restaurant a second chance. NEVER COMING BACK AGAIN! Appalling service. A table for two with a high chair, I was given a corner table and for my 10 month old to sit on the corner of our table??? Website says 11:30 lunch time. They would not serve me my lunch food till it hit 12 o'clock. No apologies for the change of their schedule. The place was not busy on Christmas Eve lunch and still no service. No one came round after serving our food till we left. And we had to get up to pay ourselves after waving staff down several times with no luck.
Service aside, food was only mediocre. Boring charcuterie board. Frozen cold chicken liver parfait? Spicy squid turns out to be deep fried squid with garlic aioli? Salmon caparccio was rubbery. Eye fillet was ok but 200g for $39??? A pinch of cabbage salad is not going to make up the volume of the plate! $140 later not satisfied. Not full. Not what your time. Looks are definitely decieving!!!
