Food was great, service was mediocre for the prices they charge and for a light crowd on a Sunday. I am not picky and always tip very well, however, if you are selling me bottles of cab wine which are mostly well over $100per bottle (when they actually cost $25 in a store) at least pour my wine for me.
Not good. This is place presents itself as a steakhouse on par with Ruth Chris’, Capital Grill, etc. on that single premise, I’m not sure how 4 people can order steaks and all of them be completely cooked incorrectly. Our party had 2 filets; one medium-well and one medium- they both came came out seared but rare. Another guest had a hanger steak; ordered medium +. Came out rare close to raw. I have a NY strip. Ordered Medium-rare that one came out close to well.
One guest sent their back because it was just too bloody and it took 25 min to get back and it was obviously just left in the salamander because it was hard as a rock...let me say the one that went back was the medium filet. So that was not well++.
Bad experience in what really feels like a tourist trap
Stay away. There are so many other great choices in NYC, this one is an epic fail.
Great atmosphere service was decent my wife really enjoyed herself there
We chose this place to have a pre-concert dinner. I would never visit again. Tuna Tartare app tasted like all they did was add soy sauce. The crackers that came with it were stale. The lamb chops were bland, raw and cold. I ordered them medium. The asparagus side was extremely bland. They steam them & give you the sauce on the side. The mango sorbet was sour like lemon mango sorbet. The room we were seated in smelled like a bathroom and we were seated in a small 2 person table while there were other empty tables. No, no one reserved them because when we left, they were still empty! This is not a cheap venue. We expected so much more. Only thing that was good was our server served us quickly and we left quickly.
My friend liked her salmon dinner but I didn’t enjoy my chicken dinner- not tasty or well presented.
I chose chicken partially because the steak was so expensive. With an appetizer, dessert, coffee and a drink dinner for one comes to around $100— for that price it should be outstanding.
We found Butcher and Banker to be a typical NYC tourist trap. Conveniently located next to MSG, the service was snobby and impersonal, other than the freshly made Caesars salad, all food was reheated, including the steak. It was a very pricey and sad gastronomic experience for us.
Preis - Leistung selbst für NY Verhältnisse zu hoch, hatten uns vom Essen her mehr erwartet. Ambiente sehr ausgefallen und interessant. Service war super.
We had a great night out at butcher and banker! The waiter was so nice and all the service was excellent. the filet Mignon was superb, so tender and flavorful. I highly recommend the mac and cheese and the asparagus with Meyer lemon hollandaise so delicious. you must get the short rib tacos-I will be going back to to eat those again! overall everything was perfect. plus you are in a bank vault-how cool!
We came here for dinner with a 730 reservation. The place was almost empty. It did not start picking up till about 9. Food was ok. The appetizer was wonderful but the entree was just ok. I had a special steak and it came out overcooked. Drinks are good but a bit over priced. The atmosphere is cool. Eating in a vault has to be cool right?! The wait staff was not as attentive as I would expect considering the price of the items on the menu. While good I probably will not come back.
We find imaginative pairings in their dishes, which are a pleasure to consume
Not the best steak, but definitely one of the most expensive
Great hidden place near penn station.
The food was phenomenal! Bar tender was great.
Enjoyed our dinner and experience very much. Very nice wait staff. Can’t wait to go back.
Great food great environment highly recommended
Having dinner inside an old bank vault is the experience lol! I mean I don’t even know what else you could say to top that! The decor, the renovated vault, the set up, color scheme.....exceptional to say the least. It’s not a very big restaurant but it was nice. The service was also excellent. The wait staff was very attentive.
The food was good but I’m not sure if I would give it 5 stars. 4 definitely.
(The Mexican street corn was very very good and was the highlight of the sides.) asparagus was very well done as well.
I had the Scottish salmon and my friend had the scallops. Salmon was well done but could have used some more flavor and my friend said that her scallops were really good.
Overall it was a wonderful experience. The service was very good and again the bank vault. The bank vault spoke for itself
You get to eat at an old bank vault is the key to this place.
Great. Needs more of a selection
I visited the restaurant on 01/26/20 and the food and service was exceptional
Great setting to eat and steak! The wine was excellent and the filet and smoked mozerella/tomato appetizer were great! Mashed potatoes made me want to come back! The juice for the lamb was a bit salty! The server was not having a good day; something besides being pleasant to us must have been on his mind.
They forgot our drinks, The steak came out incorrectly cooked
I was in the NYC on the 25January2020 for the Billy Joel concert and booked a reservation here in October2019. The food was very good and expensive but that is to be expected...what I didn't expect was the amount of noise (clapping with laughing) with carrying on voices from the kitchen. It was like a party was going on. My expectation for a 300 dollar meal (before tip) is a more sensible and reasonable noise levels. They need to speak to the kitchen staff and alert them to the fact that they are working at an upscale steak house and not TGIF. Adding doors might help, IDK. I did notice that tables located further from the kitchen did not suffer the same distractions. If I had not made reservations a few months before hand, and showed up just looking to be seated without a reservation, then I can understand the poor seating position. It was a 5:15 reservation and they could have sat a table for two anywhere. I suppose if you eat here (food was very good) and are not seated in the back where the kitchen is located, you will have a much better experience. Based on my experience I can't recommend eating here as the ambiance near the rear of the establishment is severely lacking.
Everything was so great. I only have one complain and that’s the way my steak was prepared. I asked for a medium well but I received well done. All of the sides were great but my filet mignon was too dry.
Great food and service portion size was massive highly recommended
Food is not seasoned. If you like bland food this is your place to go.
No doorman to direct you upon arrival . Sign on venue door directs you to use hotel entrance which can be annoying on a cold nyc winter night . Once in hotel you have figure out we’re to go and get to elevator. Elevator has a steak house button but doesn’t say BUTCHER & BANKER so I guess steak house it is?
Once in basement we are greeted my large man with his hands folded like a fake security guard in a suite . We explain we have a reservation and he gets host . Come to find out the security guard is the manager .. but ok !
Host never asked us our name but seats us in the vault ... which is empty with no other guest ... we asked to be moved to a section that has people they say the other section is closed . But we can sit in bar lounge area . Ok so I get it it’s slow but why close off a section at 9:00pm when you close at 10:30 makes no sense . Very sketchy but ok . I explained it’s my wife Birthday day so we would like a better table .
Once they pointed us and said go pick any seat that’s when I noticed the hint of racism so we are black .. ok .
Waitress was nice food was average .
I noticed a lawn jockey at the front entrance . Now many ppl may not know but a lawn jockey was a very controversial statue used in the Jim Crow era witch marked racism in America . Why is there I white lawn jockey in a restaurant that’s theme is a steak house in a bank I really would like to know how the two correlate !
Lastly our bill comes and it has a mandatory 15% gratuity on it lol . I lol because I’m saying I would have tipped more than 15% . Is it because we are black why a mandatory grat was put on bill? Who puts a mandatory grat on a table for 2 ? Aren’t mandatory grats illegal in NYC?
But ok the whole experience was totally underwhelming. I’ve been to many steak houses and many nyc restaurants and have never felt this level of sketchiness. Guess everyone else just loves to take pics by vault and don’t pay attention to the subtle racism in this place .
Amazing anniversary meal! As good if not better than the first time we came (on opening night)
Ray was especially amazing with his attentiveness and his care and knowledge of my dietary restrictions with no issues whatsoever.
Hands down best meal we’ve eaten during our holiday and would absolutely recommend to anyone after an experience as well as amazing food/wine! Thank you and see you again next time! X
Everything was amazing from start to finish. I went for my birthday and I couldn’t be more happy with my decision to come in.
We enjoyed the atmosphere and the service. The steaks were “okay”. The meat was nice but not flavorful.
Great food. Neat location. Great service. If you're looking for a neat venue that's not terribly expensive, this is your place.
The food was not worth the price. I've had better steak at other steakhouses.. Even the cut of the steak was too fatty and not meaty. I ordered the porterhouse for 2. I asked for steak sauce and was given bbq sauce. The service was not welcoming. No one checked on us to ask if everything was ok at the table. I mentioned that it was my birthday when I made the reservation but it was not even acknowledged while there. Overall my experience was not great a little disappointing.
Food was horrible, service was even worst. Then they had the the nerve to add gratuity to the bill. Outback Steakhouse runs circles around this place. Must not go !!!
Wonderful meal! Wonderful service. Our go to place before an event at the Garden
We were seated promptly with our reservations. Staff was very attentive the whole time. Everything was delicious and the atmosphere made for a unique dining experience.
The NY strip and ribeye steaks were seasoned perfectly. The "Proper Manhattan" was a tasty drink and a hit at the table. The asparagus and mashed potatoes were good as well.
Overall, it was a great dining experience and we will be visiting again.
Hands down the best porterhouse I have ever had.
Wonderful ambiance, underground in a restored bank vault! Portions were HUGE - we could have shared our meal! Manhattan cocktail was perfect, too. Would definitely recommend it.
We had dinner at 7:30 on a Sunday evening. The crowds were low and we were seated promptly in the dining area behind the vault. While the vault dining area is a feature, none of the decor evoked twenties deco glam, but was more of a modern theme. The red light fixtures and colorful fabric panels give space a playful feel.
Service throughout the meal was friendly and attentive. Bar drinks were good mix and pours. Water, food, and drinks were served and cleared promptly.
We were hungry from a long day of walking and ordered an appetizer, salad, shared a main course and two sides.
Delicious herbed fresh baked bread with plain & flavored butter was served after we ordered. All portions were generously sized to share for two. The tuna tartare was perfectly flavored. The wedge salad was served with generous portions of Gorgonzola and bacon.
We ordered Kan-Kan Pork, T-bone cauliflower and roasted wild mushrooms. The pork was brought out for “photo ops” prior to carving into chops, belly & cracklings, with a beautiful presentation and more than enough for two servings. All was perfectly cooked, with tender beautifully flavored chops, melt in your mouth belly, and crispy cracklings. The accompanying carmelized apples and sauce were a great addition. The cauliflower and mushrooms were cooked to perfection. There was more than enough to eat and no room for dessert.
The Maitre D and the bartender were miserable, we were charged an additional $3 for a martini "up" and an additional $1.00 for olives. The salads were bland, the bacon slab was fatty.
Food was amazing and the portion size was verging on the excessive!!! Service attentive but not intrusive. Great place but a little on the pricey side.
