It was our end of year Book Club meeting where we choose a restaurant to go to and discuss the books for the following year. I had visited the Botanical 4 weeks before to explain the situation and request a round table which was far easier for discussion especially with 60 and 70 years old women! When we arrived we were on a rectangular table but after a short discussion with the manager this was rectified and we were moved to a round table. $25 for steak, fries, salad and a glass of wine is a winner and those who chose something else were very happy. Happy Hour extends to 7pm and $15 Billiecart champagne was very nice! Look forward to going back next year! Regards Penny
Steak night great value and good quality. Wait staff were accommodating in letting us stay past our allotted booking time.
I gotta say I reckon the house burger was the best damn burger I've had in my life! And lemmie tell you, I've been around awhile and I've downed a lot of burgers in my time! My waistline is a testament to that! My partner had the leak tart and it was also to die for, however I would say a bit on the small side. I had the choctop for dessert which was fabulous and my partner had chocolate mousse with honeycomb. It was a work of art to look at, but a bit overpriced by my standards. The waiter was fabulous and fun, not intrusive, and when he asked what we were celebrating and was told my partners birthday, dessert came with a candle and he sang happy birthday. A really nice touch.
Fantastic food and wine great place with friends. Enjoy the experience
Great selection of food on their menu. Wine list is superb with a heap of quality wines to select.
Staff will go above and beyond to look after all who go and dine. Amazing service!
Beautiful bar out back to keep the night going if you desire. Will continue to eat and enjoy many more night here to come.
Took a friend to Thursday steak night. She is a student so I knew she could afford $25 for steak, French fries, salad and glass of wine. We enjoyed the meal and the chance to catch up in such a pleasant environment.
Front of house staff were excellent. Food delivery was dreadful as we had to wait at every turn. We arrived at 7pm. Entrees arrived 7.30pm and mains at 8.50. No explanation and no apology. At the price charged, we should be able to expect better. Very disappointing experience.
We love steak night at your hotel and return every 3 or 4 months! It was a little too noisy this visit but it's not usually too bad.
The food is excellent, although the menu is fairly limited. The winelist is phenomenal but there are few bottles less than $100. Service, while attentive, was slow even though the restaurant was not full. We suspect that this was deliberate so we'd drink (poand spend) more. If you visit, be aware of this. Our experience was good; it could have been great.
We are from Sydney so I have not been to the Bot for at least 5 years even though we come to Melb a few times a year
Your manager Chris gave us first class service
Overall not a great experience
Got charged 2 bottles of wine instead of 1 that we had
Rang later to complain, they promised to call me back but never did
I did enjoy the whole night. The food and service was great!
It was an excellent lunch in every way! A special mention to the outstanding staff who never faltered in their professionalism even when we were incapable of adding up the bill properly - which was indeed correct! And we were wrong!!
We had high expectations for dinner at The Botanical however the ambience of the dining room upon entering was a big let down to start with. Very basic table setting and uncomfortable cafe style chairs. Service was very hit and miss, so efficient it lost any real feeling of service. Food was very average, pasta with spanner crab was so dry it was inedible. It was very expensive for what we actually had and was not an overly enjoyable night at all. Definitely would not recommend, nor will be returning.
The waiter did a remarkable job considering how much cocaine it appeared he was on.
We met our interstate guests here on a very wet Friday. Our greeting was professional and they offered to take coats and very wet umbrellas!
We started with a shared Charcuterie platter and extra bread was brought without being asked(unusual in most places now) and very appreciated.
Next was a shared fish, which was a little bland and shoulder of lamb.
The lamb is a generous serving and there was enough for 4!
A tasting plate of small treats was a lovely way to finish without feeling you needed to go to the gym!
Overall I would recommend to a variety of ages and a visit at anytime would leave you with a good impression.
Cold and uninviting. The food was ok but not to the standards expected
Just not special... for the price.
I ordered the prawn cocktail; I imagined a throw-back to the 70's; instead I got a 'deconstructed' prawn cocktail. That is, four prawns on a plate, some lettuce on the side, and cocktail sauce in a small bowl; like McDonald's dipping sauce! At $22.00... no.
For main, I chose seafood angel hair pasta... I'm not sure where the seafood was; the pasta was nice... only nice... At $36.00... Again no!
A friend ordered the pork fillet for main. It was entree size at best... For $34 I'd want more than an entree!
"Of course" sides are extra... so add another $12.00 to each of the orders.
The wine list is extensive... but...
We went on Easter Monday - and despite hearing that penalty rates for hospitality workers have been reduced - we were slugged with a 10% public holiday surcharge; including on wine purchases.
So all up, a very expensive price for a very average food experience.
I’m a long term Thursday night diner at the Botanical, as are the friends I was with last Thursday.
It was very noticeable that there have been changes,..and not for the better! The ambience had gone.
The tables in the dining room were bland and unwelcoming: No small candles, not small vase with a flower, no side plates, no salt and pepper.
The waiter was not coping. Clearly there have been cutbacks. Why?
We waited ages for bread (had to ask), for our order to be taken, for the food to arrive. The glass of wine was miserly.
You would not accept the Entertainment Book Voucher, which has always been accepted previously, even on Thursday nights!
All in all, we were very disappointed.
On the positive side, the steak was beautiful.
The prices didn’t match the service......it took 25 minutes for our first drink to arrive. A side dish was forgotten.
The best steaks in town. The stakes are cooked to perfection.
Great food, loved the spatchcock & pavlova. The dining area is a very stylish.
Botanical was by far the worst restaurant experience we've had in Melbourne for more than 5 years. We were a party of 6 with a booking for 8:30pm. The table was not ready when we came so we had a drink in the bar and was shown to our table at 8:45pm. We were hungry so we ordered quickly and then............nothing. We enquired to a food a number of times but it was always just on its way. At 10:15pm they 'suddenly' realised we were there and gave us a plate of oysters. The food finally arrived just after 10:30pm by which time we were so hungry we just scuffed the food down.
I will never go to the Botanical again nor will any of my friends. If I could give it less than 1 star I would.
