Great food, great location and very helpful staff.
Plenty of options to eat indoors or outdoors.
Very good as usual. Only negative was no real ale.
Food very good but table service could soo much better
Food was delicious but service was poor. All the staff were lovely but got a first drinks wrong and waiting for second drinks for 30 mins had to get up to find someone for a drink and then had to
And find staff to let them know we had been waiting
For drinks for 30 mins. All the staff were lovely though, think must be short staffed or have new staff or something x
Booked a table for 4 people 13th June the occasion was an 80th birthday. On arrival we were given a table that seated 7 next to the bar and the doorway where they were booking people in. We asked if we could have a table in the orangery as it was more pleasant, so after a lot of posturing and checking on the booking tablet we were allocated a table. My husband received a dirty set of cutlery that had to be returned and had to chase the staff for a clean set well after his food arrived. The lamb wasn’t accompanied with mint sauce and we also had to ask for gravy and salt and pepper. Vegetables were barely cooked quite crunchy Ok if you like your veg that way. Waited half an hour for two sweets the staff didn’t seem to know who had ordered what as we were asked what our order was and then brought out the wrong sweet which subsequently was charged on the bill. When we did get the bill after half an hour of asking for it we had to query a few items listed to staff then again to the manager who did amend the amount for us. All in all a disappointing experience for a birthday treat as the black horse has always been very good a shame it’s not up to standard now.
Only had drinks, sat for 45 mins before some one served us, then took about 25mins for drinks to come would have understood if they were busy but quiet
Sat at one of the covered outdoor tables which was great. Food great and service good though servers and host were busy which perhaps stopped them reacting quickly to requests (additional condiments requested never arrived and bill was requested 3 times before being told that if paying by card better to go to the bar to do). Changes to the outdoor area are a big improvement too! Will definitely be coming back again soon!
A beautiful place to eat with amazing views, food was delicious, however, the service was terrible, we have eaten here before and the service was good but I think on this occasion they had overbooked and also had a wedding and a private function on and the service was extremely slow. Staff friendly but inattentive
Afternoon Tea was amazing, so much choice, really enjoyed it
Amazing service and food was delicious will be returning
Great views, excellent food and good service… will certainly be going again!
Lovely surroundings friendly attentive
Comfy table. Inspired quotes on the walls. Nice touch
Our meal yesterday at Black Horse was lovely as always, we’ve never had a bad experience here! The staff are lovely and the food is outstanding. The view is second to none!
Very enjoyable as always
Took elderly parents here for a weekday lunch. We were greeted and shown to our table, staff very pleasant and helpful. Menu choice good, and my favorite wine so all great.
Only thing that tarnished slightly was the buildings works being carried out on the roof above where we were seated (conservatory) my parents are hard of hearing and have hearing aids, but loud noise is apparently exaggerated more so abit uncomfortable at times for them, but overall a great day out.
We sat outside after the meal as it was a lovely sunny day and enjoyed the wonderful countryside views. Amble seating outdoors.
Booked for a birthday lunch on 8 June 2021. Helpful waitress went through menu and that day’s “specials” - all three of us chose the “special” Clay-baked Lamb. What a mistake.
We waited ages for it but were advised by the Chef (who shouted across to us when the waitress queried the delay with him) that it was “baking in the clay” so after the wait we were expecting something really special.
Instead, what was brought to our table were three portions of lamb chunks, formed into balls & wrapped in grease proof paper (with a whole garlic clove and a tiny bit of rosemary) encased in clay, which the waitress then broke open and served onto our plates.
We were obviously paying for the novelty value of the dish because we got the distinct impression it was a clever way of using up left over lamb. The dish was dry and tasteless (apart from the lingering taste of the garlic clove). It certainly seemed that rather than actually being “baked” in the clay, the clay was just a mechanism to re-heat what looked like leftover roast meat. We were expecting “seasonal vegetables” with the lamb but all that was served was a small sprig of broccoli and two pieces of carrot, accompanied by some lukewarm mashed potato which was tasteless and seemed as if that too was left over from the previous day. At £16.95 a head it was very over-priced.
We hadn’t had breakfast that morning (looking forward to a nice lunch instead) so ate most of what was served to us solely because we were hungry but we’re really disappointed by the meal. We’ve eaten at The Black Horse many times in the past and always enjoyed the food so we were really looking forward to our meal, particularly as it was a special occasion. The meal was only redeemed by the absolutely delicious desserts (two of us had cheesecake and one had the chocolate lava cake) - hence the overall score we’ve given here. If it wasn’t for the desserts we’d have scored ‘1’.
If you haven't been go. That is my very best advice. Everything is amazing, staff are so friendly and helpful. Nothing too much trouble. If you go once you'll be hooked as you'll see other's food being served and just know you need to go back to try that!
Amazing food, lovely setting. Staff extremely friendly, will be back!
Lovely staff but food is overpriced and tasteless.
We visited the Black Horse on Sunday lunchtime and just wanted a few drinks. We were greeted by a lovely member of staff who sat us down in a nice table in the main courtyard in a perfect sunny spot. We ordered 4 beers which arrived quickly. An hour passed before we were visited again by any member of staff which by that point we were really needing another drink. We had tried and failed to gain the attention of the many young staff members, some of which didn't look to be serving but merely cleaning. In the end, one of us had to go into the bar area and ask for our order to be taken. A girl finally came out and took our order of drinks and then we waited another 10-15 mins for the drinks to arrive. It was really slow service and isn't a one off as other friends have had the same issues. Slow, unattentive service isn't what I would expect, especially in covid times when the whole idea is to stay at your table. It wasn't busy enough that that should affect the service either. Really poor to the point I probably wouldn't visit again. More attentive staff just asking if we are okay as they are passing is all that is really needed to make this otherwise lovely venue a much more attractive offering. I think the lack of management on show and checking on the staff is probably telling. Having worked in hospitality, I know the benefit of strong management to ensure the younger members are on the ball.
Seated upstairs, unpleasant dusty surroundings, smelly, upstairs, food -over cooked veg and chewy tasteless sirloin of beef. Won’t go back. It used to be really good.
I love the black horse where service is normally great. Had to wait 45 minutes just for a drink and an hour for food which is really poor. Food was up to its usual high standards though
It took over an hour to get the starters. Once these arrived, we waited an extended period for the main, when they arrived, the belly pork was wasn’t cooked and all meals were nearly cold. Many tables around us were given the wrong meals and were served meals ordered from a different tables. Overall, there was no organisation
Service review is reflective of the greeting we received on arrival which can only be described as brusque and we were not taken to our table, had to find it ourselves. The remainder of the staff were an absolute pleasure, especially under trying circumstances when the card readers were not working properly.
Food was delicious.
Great venue with stunning views. Staff were very friendly and service was very quick and efficient.
Nice meal lovely place
The whole evening was chaotic, staff were clearly struggling to cope with the number of diners. We waited long periods of time for drinks, in spite of arriving early for our table we had to keep enquiring about it until eventually the restaurant appeared not to have one for us. When the food finally arrived a major item was missing from one of the meals. All in all a stressful experience.
Unfortunately our dining experience was terrible. The worst service we have ever experienced. The staff are clearly working hard and are busy but they are extremely stretched. Orders taken after 25 minutes of sitting down, no one checking how things are, no one around to ask for condiments or more drinks. Starters were inedible and the waitress didn’t apologise or offer an alternative, it seemed as if it’s a regular occurrence. The whole pub and restaurant seemed chaos and no one was clearly leading or coordinating.
It used to be such a nice atmosphere with lovely food, couldn’t be further from that now
A wonderful setting. This review is a balance against the fact they have just reopened and are finding their feet again after a challenging year.
Our table was at 19.30.. and we finally got our mains at 22.20. The team recognised our wait and a couple of mistakes with the order, and I know this isn't their normal service standard.
The prawn and rice starter is excellent value and really nice as we're the fishcakes. Steaks we're as expected.
Overall a pleasant meal, but slow service on this occasion.
A very disappointing visit!!!! 90minute wait for food. Fish & chips very over cooked, other meals luke warm. Clearly under staffed on a busy sunny day. Lady in ‘team leader’ role did nothing to address the situation & was rude & unhelpful.
Beautiful food spoiled by slow service. We decided not to leave a tip as we were waiting a long time for food and drinks and it was difficult to get anyone's attention for service. Food took over 45 mins to arrive after we eventually flagged someone down to take the order.
Food was excellent. Service was almost none existent to be honest. It did not spoil the experience as such, and I assume they are struggling for staff post COVID. We will come back, but hoping the service improves.
A little disappointed on this visit when compared to my previous afternoon tea here. Few issues with the food, no fruit scones left, no pease pudding - none of this was mentioned to us when we ordered which is not good as would have maybe went for something different. We asked for unbuttered sandwiches and got buttered, the bread has changed to buns which were not as nice as the previous fresh bread used......I wouldn’t rush back for afternoon tea to be honest after this visit.
Booked a table for lunch for 12.30. It was a beautiful day & so when we arrived (early) we asked if we could sit outside rather than inside. We were told no as all dining tables were all fully booked from 1pm. We sat inside & watched the tables outside during our meal - at least half were free for the duration of our meal & still free when we left. The staff all seemed pretty unsure of what they were doing - lots of conflicting information as to whether or not we could order a drink outside after our meal & no one appeared to be in charge. Two of the 4 adult meals arrived 10 minutes before the other 2 (which had apparently been sent back to the kitchen as the chef hadn’t been happy with them?). The kids burger came with cheese when we had asked for no cheese so had to go back. No cutlery delivered to table for a good few minutes after first 2 meals arrived. Vegan fish & chips (battered tofu) was pretty poor - tofu very sloppy & chips over cooked. Route to toilets wasn’t clear & ended up being back against the one way system so not ideal. Toilets without loo paper & soap at the sinks very poor. It feels as if this place has completely overstretched itself and just can’t cope with the number of customers it is attracting. Shame as it used to be so good.
Beautiful outdoor space with a wonderful view and lovely food.
Very nice food and service was quick considering how busy the staff were
Service was very slow. Lobster was ordered but staff were unable to provide the correct cutlery/tools to eat this properly.
Appalling service. Wait of over an hour.. no contact from staff.. no attentiveness to customers. In our section , at least three other customers were unhappy at being ignored and kept waiting. No apology or explanation from staff, until I complained after an hour of being ignored. No organisation or leadership apparent. Food adequate, although my wife’s peas were cold.. no one to mention it to, no one came to ask if all well. A very disappointing experience.
We went on Friday 4th June with a family Table booked for 7. Firstly they wanted us to sit 6 to one table and 1 person on another ? We discussed the situation and we all sat quite comfortably on one table all be it cramped. We were sat next to the Bar "A Big Mistake" The bar telephone never stopped ringing driving us mad. The Service was very very Slow the average waiting time for a round of drinks. 25 mins.?. The food took even longer to arrive and when it did arrive they had forgot my Main Course. ARGH! So i Just Gave Up while the rest of the table ate theirs. I hate eating alone £ 197.00 and i did not eat anything. i was prepared to pay much more but getting a drink was a night mare. Sums it up really We will stick to the Stables at Beamish Hall Hotel In future Crazy situation.
Must have a massive shortage of staff as the place was not full by any stretch of the imagination and had to wait 35 mins for first drink and over an hour for food and again 30 mins for another drink, never had an experience like that at this pub before.
Hope they sort it out ASAP as will put people off in future
