Great host but server not as good
Steak Frites with greens were the best. Great wines by the glass.
It is a charming place. Had no problems with it. We live across the road so are familiar with it.
Cocktails could do with a lot less ice, and the noise level could be lower.
Remember, it is a restaurant/bistro, not a nightclub. We want to talk, not jive.
Cheers, hope this review is useful.
Food not up to usual standard - fish special course over cooked and swimming in liquid. Duck special meal better choice but unremarkable. Noise level uncomfortably loud. Tables too close: although I’d booked well in advance, live locally and have made Bistro Rex my key local restaurant for months now and selected it to recommend to a visiting Melbourne friend I found the dinner experience disappointing and would probably only book for lunches now.
Great food. The lobster omelette is to die for. Excellent service
Best steak I've had in years. And the crispy new potatoes were peerless. Knowledgable friendly service too. We left on a real high.
The service, food, wine and ambience were wonderful. Highly recommended for date night in a bustling spacious environment. Thank you so much, we will be back
The food and the service was outstanding we first saw the restaurant on SBS Chef's Line and we decided to eat there, we are extremely happy that we did and intend on eating there again and again and again and we will be sharing our new find with all of our friends and family
Absolutely love the setting and i would recommend asking for booth seating as this is particularly comfortable. the menu is broad and the daily specials also good. Drinks menu is typical french, which is nice, and they have a daily happy hour. Sunday special oysters were also excellent tasting and value. Staff extremely friendly and welcoming - would recommend
Love Bistro Rex, been going often since it opened. Beautiful food, great wine list and always wonderful service and bustling ambiance. Its hard to decide what to choose to eat becuase its all so damn good.
With restaurants in this price range there are some basics that you come to expect. Unfortunately on this occaision bistro rex didnt get a few basics right:
Like when i called to say we would be 10 minutes late and the response was "dont worry we will hold your table for you" only to find that they didn't hold any table at all and we had to wait at the bar for 15 minutes.
Waiting at the bar for 15 minutes is not that bad, but doing so without anyone asking us if we would like a drink is a little annoying. Even a menu to peruse would have been helpful!
And when we were finally seated... no menus. We had to flag a waiter down and ask for one, who finally took a drinks order - 25 minutes after we had arrived.
You can do better Bistro Rex!
Great food, excellent service, varied wine, atmosphere relaxing , a little noisy which is good but did make listening a bit tough.
Great service, wonderful ambiance and delicious food. Highly recommended.
Absolutely sensational food and service. Great wine list also.
We saw the chef on The Chefs Line and were impressed. We were not disappointed when we came to the restaurant. Food and service were excellent
We will be back
as before it was excellent... and we will be back this week if not before
Delightfully rich French food. Oysters always good. Surprising number of wine list bargains.
I love the place and its been a perfect hangout for me living in Potts Point, the staff are fabulous, considerate and caring
Great night out, the perfect choice for Valentines Day.
Food was top notch with perfect serving sizes and variety in each course
Service was outstanding too. The planned dessert had run out however the alternative was amazing and very professionally handled.
5 Stars - would definitely recommend
A busy night due to it being Valentine's Day but that just accentuated the bistro feel. The ambience is always going to be a touch noisy but very relaxed. A special degustation menu for the night was a great mix of flavours and the delivery was well paced. Service was friendly and efficient. All in all a great dining experience and a fun night out.
Excellent on all accounts. Food was incredibly delicious; the best steak I’ve had in memory. Staff were perfect and so many wait staff meant perfect service. Beautiful and welcoming layout. One of the best dining experiences we’ve had here or overseas.
Absolutely delicious- service was just right, and the food was really enjoyable. Great choices and great wine list too
Bistro Rex is one of our favourites in Sydney. Great service, delish food and a buzzy atmosphere.
We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at Bistro Rex and highly recommend it. The wait staff was outstanding, the food delicious and it felt like a pretty good value for high-end Sydney dining.
just the best of everything and more
And we will go again
What an evening! I had heard about this place from a friend and didn't know what the fuss was all about until tonight. From the moment we (my girlfriend and I) walked in to Bistro Rex, we were greeted by a friendly staff member, and even though it was a fairly busy evening, he still took the time to take us to our seat and show us the menu. They were very attentive.
We needed a little help and so he recommended the Duck Leg for my girlfriend, and I got the Scotch Fillet. We also got a few side dishes and entree dishes (we were pretty hungry!). And the meals were perfect. They also had an enormous selection of French wines! We allowed them to recommend what they thought would be paired best with our meals and it was perfect.
Considering it was a fairly busy evening (you need to book or you may miss out on a seat), it wasn't too loud. The restaurant is pretty big, so they can comfortably cater for a large number of people. But the dimmed lights, music and ambience in general made you feel like you were in a boutique restaurant right in the heart of France, so they play that card very well!
I would definitely recommend Bistro Rex to my mates, and look forward to going back very soon. Thank you for a great night! :)
We were a bit puzzled about why Bistro Rex was so quiet on a Friday night. My wife and I used to live in Potts Point and Bistro Rex was our favourite restaurant not just for the cuisine but also for the atmosphere. The place used to be buzzing and there was a queue out the door every weekend night. So why has this splendid French eatery lost its popularity? In terms of food enjoyment, the mains was a big win but everything else lacked the "wow" factor. Nowhere in Sydney does a better steak and the "Steak Frites" really does transport you back to a pre-yellow vest Paris when France was still a great country. The beef tartare did not pack the same punch as the last time we dined here. It lacked seasoning and the accompanying puff pastries were over-baked. Plus, the Sydney Rock oysters lacked that fresh-off-the-boat zestiness. Alas, perhaps this quaint bistro is on a downward spiral and this is deeply saddening as it truly was one of the best joints in town.
Outstanding yet again, wait staff knowledgeable and friendly, food amazing as always. Can’t wait to see you all again soon.
We spend a really lovely time to the Bistro Rex last Monday with my husband. Amazing wine menu ! Perfect for french palete. The menu as simple as it is, still Taste amazing. We were feeling in France just for one night. Service was perfect, thank to all the staff. We will be back for sure.
Bistro Rex continues to deliver excellent food and service to locals and newcomers alike. Every customer is made to feel welcome, drinks and food arrive promptly in a lively and chic atmosphere.
Date night with the wife. Great food, amazing service and all round great dining experience
Great food and excellent service.
Got preferences right
Staff are outstanding
Another beautiful lunch. Superb fish. Great service
Absolutely terrific, one of the best meals I’ve had in Sydney. Fantastic service, great wine and the food was incredible.
We had the grand banquet menu and it was worth every penny.
Been looked after well by nick. He emailed and call us before hand. Good value for money. I went back second time and will be more to come
They are really pro and know what they are doing. My friends like it and impressed.
This was my second time I'd been to Bistro Rex and I was showing it off to my father - they didn't disappoint . I loved it again and Dad is keen to go back next time he's in Sydney.
Lovely neighbourhood restaurant with authentic French Food...
Catered for food allergies.
Pate is amazing!!
Nice night for my and a friends birthday.
Good food, was a late booking and didn’t feel rushed to leave
FINALLY AFTER MANY ATTEMPTS TO GET TO BISTRO REX - WE MADE IT! WE HAD AN EXCELLENT TABLE WITH ATTENTIVE, PROFESSIONAL, POLISHED SERVICE THAT DIDNT MISS A BEAT! OUR WAITER WAS ALSO VERY KNOWLEDGABLE ABOUT THE DIETRY AND BEVERAGE QUESTIONS THAT THE TABLE HAD, WHICH WAS A REFRESHING CHANGE.
THE MENU WAS AN EXCELLENT WELL BALANCED CRAFTED LIST OF FRENCH CLASSICS AND PROVIENCIAL STYLES. THE FOOD ITSELF WAS OUTSTANDING AND PASSIONATELY COOKED WITH EXCELLENT FLAVOURS THROUGHOUT ALL THE DISHES.
THE DESIGN OF THE SPACE IS VERY UPMARKET BUT LENDS ITSELF TO ALL TYPES OF EXPERIENCES FROM A CASUAL DRINK AT THE BAR TO A FULL ON FORMAL NIGHT. THE VIBE INSIDE WAS UBER COOL WITH A FANTASTIC MIX OF CLIENTEL.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND BISTRO REX AND I CANT WAIT TO GET BACK TO TRY IT AGAIN.
