Birthday dinner. Outside on a cool evening. Great food!
Well, it was OK. Everything was fairly salty. I don’t think there was bang for the buck. My side vegetable was over cooked and soggy. The steak was pretty gristled and did not come as ordered. The swordfish was good. The chips were terribly salty. Our waiter said goodbye only as I was walking past, heading home, after escorting my date to her car. Really, it was average.
Outstanding in every way. Food, wine service, quality, ambiance were all top notch. Will definitely be back.
Gorgeous meal, wonderful atmosphere, first rate service.
A much-needed evening of civility and fine food. So nice to eat indoors again, and in such a pleasant setting!
Great food. A nice menu with lots of specials. All 4 of of us loved our food. Nice outside can’t wait to eat inside.
Heat lamps for cold nights.
One thing they ask if it’s a special occasion and it was my husbands birthday but they did nothing. Not even a candle in our meringue desert btw was excellent.
We chose Bistro D'Azur for an anniversary dinner. We haven't eaten out since COVID started and chose this restaurant because we've eaten there before and know them to have excellent food and because they have outdoor dining and we felt like their tables are spaced safely apart. They did not let us down on either of these scores. The meal was delicious, and we felt the COVID risk was low. The servers wore masks and gloves, they had disposable menus, the cutlery was wrapped, all good. There were a few drawbacks: Our table was right where cars idle to pick up take-out, which got loud a couple of times, and the sun was blazing on our table (like laser, eyesight-destroying kind of blazing) throughout the meal, while other, shadier tables sat empty. Also, we had one diner with a food allergy. The waiter was not on top of his game in that regard. Each course had to be sent back to remove allergens that had been added. I've eaten there before -- different waiter -- and had highly attentive and careful service, so I'd chalk it up to the guy having a bad night.
I felt like I was eating at a high end fine dining restaurant in NYC. The food is incredible and the service was great. Everything we ate was phenomenal. South Orange/Maplewood area is lucky to have this restaurant! Outdoor dining was lovely and well spaced. I can’t wait to go back again.
Always have a great meal. Truly is fine dining. Great food, interesting decor and Amazing service.
Excellent experience. Ate outside, cozy, attentive service. Very good NJ wines, the gazpacho is superb. Roasted pear salad with feta was lovely. Entrees: Paella was superb, strip steaks cooked correctly and lovely with the heirloom tomatoes, and the lamb was very high quality. A superb addition to the maplewood/south Orange dining slate.
So pleasant to have fresh French/Mediterranean cuisine, expertly prepared and served by friendly, knowledgable wait staff in my own backyard. I highly recommend Bistro d'Azur, just wish outdoor seating was further back from the street.
Outdoors. Safe distancing. No compromises in menu, food or service.
We have eaten here twice and each time is so very special.
The wait staff was very attentive too
Thank you for such an amazing evening
The food was wonderful and the staff was so friendly and welcoming! I can’t stop thinking about the apricot glazed duck and their homemade ice cream!
Excellent all around. Great food and service, beautifully arranged outdoor seating. We love this restaurant!!
Great food and service. We enjoyed and plan to visit again.
What an incredible meal! Every dish was thoughtfully prepared, and you could tell that even the waiter was proud of their product. WE WILL BE BACK!!
The outdoor dining set up was quite nice! Service was lovely.. could not have had a more accommodating and pleasant waitress. The lobster crepe was delicious... and foie gras also delicious but not as large a piece as last time which was disappointing... especially with the up-charge... and the strawberries that accommodate the fois gras could have been left out entirely.. too mushy. Duck was the special and was very fatty this time making it tough. Over all, dinner was quite good however.
We really enjoy Bistro D’Azur. We just discovered this charming place during the pandemic. We have been there several times lately since NJ began allowing outdoor dining. The servers are lovely and the food is delicious and they have very attractive, comfortable, socially distant outside dining. The restaurant inside is beautiful and we’re really looking forward to dining inside when are permitted to do that!
Great quality french cuisine with friendly customer service!
Had a wonderful birthday dinner outside. While the ambiance is limited because we are on the sidewalk, the staff could not have been nicer and more attentive. And the food is absolutely top notch and French in the best way possible. Must try the truffle lobster crepe!
What a fabulous outdoor dining experience! I knew the food was excellent — have dined inside and had a brilliant take away casserole. The other evening we experienced outside. Intentional look: most restaurants have make-do decor. Bistro went the extra mile with its setting. Feels permanent. Goat cheese and strawberry salad - great. Diver scallops - wonderful as always. My BF had octopus and the duck — also wonderful. Highly recommend!
Many thanks for a phenomenal evening of incredible tapas. Chef, you are amazing and so very talented. Corn ice cream was exceptional!!! You brought the taste of France home to us.

Food was great and service was excellent!
Although we were outside it was a wonderful experience in this new world. We enjoyed the meal. It was wonderful.
Food was exceptionally good It was a perfect night to dine outside. The service was wonderful tables were socially distant would definitely dine there again
Our second time here and the restaurant is doing a really good job dealing with limited outdoor space and seating. The food and service were terrific. The chef here is awesome...some of the best salmon I've ever had. Wait staff is wonderful -- attentive, helpful, personable. We love it; we'll be back. Worth every bite.
Every dish was delicious.
We enjoyed meeting Chef Krug again
He was the chef for my sons wedding and the food was
I am excited to dine there again
As usual the food, service etc. was impeccable and excellent. However, the 6:30 seating was blaring sun and no efforts were made to correct it. Having to eat my meal with very hot sun on my face and back was not enjoyable and dangerous since I have had pre cancerous cells on both my face and back.
Thank you so much for the five stars we really appreciate it! We are so sorry about the heat wave. We have umbrellas at every table and they tilt! But at sunset when the sun is low there isn't much we can do. We really wish we could "turn down" the sun or plant a big beautiful tree in the center of Academy Street. LOL We have been encouraging our diners to book later in the evening when the sun goes down and the cooler breezes blow. We hope to see you again when the weather is better.
I almost never right reviews but this meal was so memorable. During Covid-19 and with all the precautions in place they did an amazing job making us feel safe and comfortable. The staff was lovey and attentive through the mean. But the food! Our meal was absolutely exceptionally - far exceeded my exceptions. We had a watermelon and feta starter assembled beautifully like a jenga pieces with sea beans. The lobster crepe was outstanding, as were the mussels. The lemon meringue pie concoction for dessert was heavenly. Highly recommend!
Amazing food and service!!
It's not an easy time for restaurants in New Jersey given the COVID-19 constraints. Outdoor dining when it is hot is not the fault of the restaurant, but it does impact the overall experience. Likewise, the street noise from cars detracted from the overall evening. The food remained excellent as it always has been and I've visited quite a few times. Prices were prix fixe with two or three courses at $65 or $79 per person. This is a change from what "used to be". It's effectively a price increase, which I suspect is one of the actions taken so the restaurant can stay in business given lower dining volume. The heat, street noise and higher cost diminished the total experience and overall value. Again, the food is great and I'll go back.
Thanks so much! For the record we didn't actually raise our prices. Our 2 course prix fixe price is based on our average per-head price before Covid. While we are requiring the prix fixe, it's only because we have just so... few... tables. We counteracted this policy however by maintaining our more accessible carryout menu. Bistro d'Go is less expensive and meals include salad, cookies and very large portions. We hope to try and please everyone while maintaining our original vision.
Covid-19: Even excellent restaurants can struggle to deliver across every category in forced-al-fresco 2020, so it's a relief to see Bistro d'azur managing so well. That the food itself still delights as it did in prior, pre-Covid visits counts for a lot in the overall assessment, and the service also remains attentive, cheerful, and well versed in menue details. For instance: explaining that their Shakshuka -- a hearty bowl of baked eggplant, tomato, feta cheese, chick peas, summer vegetables, foraged mushroom, and truffle topped with two perfectly fried eggs -- is not necessarily a *true* North African Shakshuka ("For one thing, it's more often served at breakfast, but, for us, it's a dinner dish"). Whichever side of the Mediterranean it came from, it was flavorful and deeply satisfying. The swordfish, too, arrived perfectly prepared, grill-marked yet tender, and in a serving abundant enough that some came home to top a salad the next day.
For appetizers, we enjoyed Gazpacho et Cru ("scallop, salmon, heirloom tomato, sherry vinegar, herb crouton, crème fraiche") and the Goat Cheese and Strawberry Salad ("fresh picked foraged greens, cucumber, pignolis, shaved fennel, aged balsamic, crostini") both fresh and quite good, and miles beyond our let's-make-this-at-home threshold on these insanely hot summer nights. Under cooler conditions we would have likely tried other appetizers from the varies menu, such as the grilled octopus or lobster crepe (stepping up from the $65 to $79 prix fixe gives each diner two appetizer choices, I recall, but I may have that wrong).
Dining on Academy Street at 8 on a Saturday night during Covid Stage III (or are we still Stage II), proved pleasingly quiet. Gorgeous clouds at sunset added to the atmosphere. The umbrella'd tables, comfortable chairs, and pretty little periwinkle makeshift fencing felt cozy in a note entirely makeshift way. A few potted plants, maybe some light music, and it would have been perfect.
Thanks so much for your awesome review. I know we all look forward to some cooler weather and we appreciate you sticking it out! Next time ask for a table around the corner in our alley where we've planted an herb garden all around! And definitely ask your server to turn up the music. We have a terrific playlist of French and World music. It's a fine line to walk between some guests asking for us to "turn it down" and others wishing it was louder. Thanks again and we hope to see you soon!
The food was way above what I anticipated. Server Caroline was spot on they were so great overall.
It was better than before COVID-19.
Thanks for making it a great experience.
Given the circumstances of only outdoor dining they did a fabulous job. Servers could not have been nicer.
This was our first date since COVID struck. The outdoor dining worked out great. The restaurant ensured all guests wore masks when not sitting at their tables and all the staff wore masks. The service was wonderful as was the food. We had a lovely chat with the owner, Tom. We brought our own wine, but they do have a bar and a list of wines by the bottle that is quite reasonable. It was a perfect night out for my husband and me.
Best meal we've had in the last year, and friendly, attentive service.
Outstanding food and service!
Never had a bad meal here. Either in house or pick up. I would give them an A+ for adjusting during the COVID pandemic.
If I was stranded on a desert island and could bring one restaurant, this would be it.
Bistro D’Azur never disappoints! We’ve been going there since they opened and have always enjoyed great food, service and ambiance. Foie gras, lobster crepes, and duck breast are our absolute favorites but there’re so many solid choices on the menu! Keep up the great work guys!
