Big Poppa's Ratings and Reviews
Good food from a very limited menu unless of course you like cheese.
Doorman was heavy handed when we arrived from the theatre which was a poor way to kick things off.
If you want to be a late night restaurant bar don’t treat people like crims when they arrive for a reservation at 10pm. We had been at te theatre so there was no way he could have thought we were drunk.
Don’t know whether he was screening. 4 well dressed middle aged men shouldn’t pose too much of a threat unless of course you are chasing a younger prettier straighter crowd.
Service was pretty good. Would be nice to have a few more regular wines. Not a fan of natural wines sorry.
You’re selling food, cocktails are fine but you need a decent wine List.
I’ll come back but hope to see it take itself a bit more seriously as a late night dining option.
I have been coming here for a while now and every time has been awesome. It is a dead set great night out. This was for my birthday and I chose to come here knowing that it’s been fab. Staff are great, and lovely. Drinks are superb and the menu is delicious. I have officially eaten everything on it. I’ve yet to get to the cheese and that’s my next visit sorted!! My favourite place to eat in Sydney.
Love this place. The service is always exceptional, and the food is delicious. Everytime I eat here it is a struggle NOT to order the hand-cut pappardelle with lamb ragu . I usually manage to get a family member to order it so at least I get a taste! It is sublime. Last visit I ordered the ricotta gnocchi which was so flavourful and delicious.
Big Poppa's is a fun hip hop Italian restaurant in Darlinghurst. I especially liked how the waiters gave very generous servings of freshly grated parmesan cheese. The dessert was really interesting - bitter chocolate tart with maple pecan praline and beer ice cream. The beer ice cream totally works - it has a malty tasty. While the food is great and it has a fun vibe, I would not recommend for a first date or business dinner because neighbouring diners were quite noisy so it was hard to hear what our fellow diners were saying.
Steak special was excellent! Lamb ragu was recommended by a friend but I found it a little dry - needed a sauce. Wine list could do with some more Australian wines.
Good vibe but music in the dining area was too loud for conversation so not ideal for a date.
Disappointing for the following reasons:
- Poor Service: started with asking for Light Beer and getting full strength beer, was ready to attribute this to the noisy environment but then it continued, asked for a long black coffee and told that they can serve only espresso, OK , asked to have a bit of HOT water on the side as espresso is too strong for me , got glass of COLD water too pour over espresso! etc.... to top it all at the end, while paying using credit card, was asked to enter tip amount in the terminal!!! If it were not for other guests around and me not wanting to make a scene I would have flatly refused but decided to bight my tongue and wear it.
-Food tasted OK , however portions were way too small
-Be mindful it is very noisy inside...
We went to Big Poppa's on Saturday night for our 12 year wedding anniversary, service was amazing, lady always around if you needed her, always made eye contact ect.. Food was great, nice to have something different for dinner... we had the cured meat plate and some imported blue cheese (was amazing!) and some beef and veal meatballs, equally amazing! Will go back for sure :)
I'm gonna go easy here as there are limited late night dining venues in Sydney due to the over legislated night culture down under and this restaurant is a standout. The food was very good and the wine selection was comprehensive. However the service was super casual and a bit cool for school. The wait staff appeared more interested in how they were being seen by the 30-something desperately fashionable crowd than focusing on their task at hand. I'll definitely go back to be entertained by the delicious food and "wangster" (white corporate gangster) late night crowd.
Good atmosphere, especially in downstairs bar.
We dined upstairs, ordering 5 dishes amongst 4 of us. The ricotta gnocchi and burrata were the standout dishes. We also had the cured meats platter, lamb pappardelle and the spatchcock. Dishes are on the smaller side so order more if dining with men.
I would come back for drinks in the downstairs bar.
Food was amazing, lamb ragu a highlight along with the gnocchi. Delish cocktails, perfect ambience (buzzing even on a Monday night but not too loud to talk without shouting). Service was faultless and just the way I like it: friendly, relaxed but attentive. Definitely coming back.
While I have heard that Big Poppa's is amazing I had to determine that for myself with my first and recent visit this past weekend. It definitely DID NOT disappoint!! Going here with friends for my birthday was such a good choice. Customer service was on point with great recommendations and attention to detail, including excellent wine that wasn't the most expensive bottle in the restaurant. The food was incredible and comforting plus there's a great atmosphere that continues from the restaurant to the bar downstairs. I will certainly be back again.
Choose the dishes that have got cheese in them and you are sure to be happy!
Great food with great vegetarian options. Matched by a really decent wine list and a fantastic cheese list. Funky urban vibe, great bar downstairs and dinner until 2am so great after theater!
