Really overpriced for average food. Chutney Mary, Veeraswamy, Trishna are all awesome curry houses nearby that are superior in quality and much more cost effective.

I have wanted to visit Benares for a few years, having seen Atul Kochhar on food programmes on TV.
As we live in North Wales, it never happened, as we were usually fully occupied with family and friends in London.
This time we managed to make the time to book.
On arrival there was a communication problem between reception downstairs and staff upstairs. When we finally got upstairs, we opted to have a pre dinner cocktail. There was no atmosphere, the bartender was on the phone ( he did apologize) and though friendly and proficient, he was quite " full on", and we were the only guests there!
We heard a lot of boisterous children's noise from the dining room, and were accommodated in a quieter corner at our request. As usual, my husband got to look at the wall behind me, and he found that very boring. We Later moved to a corner table at our request, when guests had left, and that was much nicer. Our waiter at the initial table told us that mirrors on the walls don't work ( hm, they do in lots of restaurants) when we suggested it would give the wall facing guests a chance to feel part of the experience. In fact he was quite chatty and opinionated, so we loved that we had George looking after us for the remainder of the evening! I was sooo looking forward to the tasting menu with a flight of delicious wines.!! The food was cooked to perfection, but all the flavours were very much alike, and in some cases the heat overpowered the texture and taste of the lovely ingredients. Suplety was missing.
I would love to go again, but my husband would not. He says he prefers my curries at home! My favourite food! My aromatherapy! It was not a fine dining experience, with people on mobile phones in a very casual manner.

Came for a treat for my partners birthday. The service we received was out of this world and my partner was even presented with a plate and a candle at the end.
Can not fault anything for start to finish.

Very good food, but very small portions (and I prefer small portions).
Good service.
Very low light above made food look pale and unappealing.
A bit disappointed and no longer surprised that they had availability for almost every night, any time.

We have been regular customers to Benares for some years now. We live some way out of London but visit at least twice a year, maybe more. For the first time, we were disappointed. The service was, as usual, excellent and we were looked after very well: quickly, professionally and efficiently. However, the tablecloth wasn't as clean as it should be with splashes of food from previous diners. The scallops were tiny and while I didn't expect more than about three, the size of them were very disappointing. The venison was minced and again not up to the usual standard as we've had some wonderful meals in the past. Bread, rice and dahl are no longer included as complimentary and we paid £9 for a very watery and uninspiring dahl dish. We were pushed to have two types of dahl but declined which was just as well given the standard of the one we had. Extremely poor. I was given a scarf at the door, which was nice. Sadly, will think very hard as to whether we will bother to return and pay such high prices for a sub standard evening.

Excellent service from start to finish. We ate from the vegetarian a la carte menu. Perfect spicing, tasty and a few extra mini taster treats from the chef.

Dress code as smart casual ( no sportswear) yet those dining next to us were wearing T shirts and trainers, talking loudly and treating the restaurant as an Indian Takeaway. This spoilt our overall ecperience. As for service, our poppadums were whisked away without asking if we had finished and a bottle of water we ordered never came but was included in the bill. I expected better service from a restaurant with such high prices and service charge.

Great service, poor food. Very poor main courses. Actual dishes served were bland and meagre Did not live up to reputation. You cannot disguise mediocre food with extravagant table service. Pity

It was clearly a fairly quite evening which may well have reduced the atmosphere. Service was quite slow overall, not that that bothered us and service correctness was very reasonable. There was nothing wrong with the food but it just didn't sparkle, though my wife was very impressed with the spinach and burrata dish both for flavour and presentation. A good evening but overall rather disappointing.

We opted for the set 3 course menu and South Indian thali, preceded by a drink in the bar.Ambience and and service were excellent, the chef had tried various new ideas and on paper the the food looked interesting but the taste did not quite match our expectations

Our party had the 6-course tasting menu, and it was excellent.
Accomplished cooking, nicely presented, lovely flavours, with subtle spicing.
Knowledgeable sommelier and very good wines.
My third visit over a period of several years, and my best experience by far.

Good things: very nice bar and excellent Negroni
attentive staff, atmospheric ambiance (mostly in bar)
Not so good: tale for three was positioned awkwardly - left us with view of service area.
Wine - very marked up.
Food: slightly badly advised on side dishes.
Fish dish was quite hard, not quite succulent enough - £34 for a not outstanding plate.
Duck dish was good.
Overall - I think this place is full of expense accounts, not worth the spend for me.

As ever the welcome and service are great and the food as good and inventive as ever - great flavour and appearance, spiced but not overwhelming - you can taste everything.

Seems a little noisier than before - difficult to hear others in our party. Also minor point but if you add items to the set menu like rice and poppadoms just tell us at the time you’re charging for it - happy to pay, just let me know.

Otherwise still in my top 5 favorite places to go in London

Visited recently for my partners birthday . From start to finish it was a wonderful experience. We enjoyed a couple of cocktails before being seated for dinner. The cocktail menu was vast and the drinks were superb .

We had the a la carte menu which was excellent . Portion sizes for Michelin starred restaurant were very good and the taste and presentation was again wonderful .

The service from the staff was prompt and each course was explained at our table which is always a nice touch .

We couldn’t fault the evening and will definitely return . Obviously the evening was an expensive one but you do get what you pay for and if your wanting to treat a special person then it is a great place to do so . The whole experience is worth every penny
