This has long been one of our favorite restaurants. However, our most recent experience was very disappointing. We were dining with some close friends to celebrate Father's Day who had never been here and we ended up feeling slightly embarrassed by the whole experience. The food was good, as always. But the service was horrible. We felt like we were invisible. We waited a very long time after being seated during which noone came to take our order for drinks or to explain the specials. So my husband flagged an employee down. He said he could help us but it wasn't even clear if he was suppose to be our waiter. He told us about the specials and took our drink orders. We thought at this point a waiter would be assigned but instead it ended up that we just had the same guy the whole night. He was not at all attentive. One of our friends would flag him down as he was passing our table to get another glass of wine. But he never asked the rest of us if we wanted refills so we drank water. The restaurant was not at all crowded so there was no clear reason why someone couldn't check on us more frequently. The experience was very uncomfortable for all of us and I don't think our friends will ever return.
Very nice selection for people who like to try different things and flavors and enjoy fairly simple but fresh and appealingly presented food. The ambiance is inviting with unique lamp accents but there could be a bit more light on the tables (was hard to read the menue)
Patio is really nice. Spinach salad with garlic and chickpeas - simple yet elegant.
Shrimp polenta - takes you to the southern coast of Spain.
Save room for the risotto.
Beautiful presentation. Great tasting food. Very nice wine selection. Patio is charming. Very professional server. Stall friendly and efficient.
Nice open patio. Nice small plates. Decent value and good service
We had the tasting menu and it was wonderful . The food was creative and delicious
Always wonderful food. We often take out-of-town guests, and we are never disappointed. One of our most favorite places to eat!
Always great food, comes out hot, perfectly plated. Flavors are excellent. Too bad wine pours are so small. Great wine, mini servings.
Great food and wonderful patio! Service was good too.
Always a great time at Autre Monde. Knowledge, pleasant service, thoughtfully prepared food and a positive vibe.
Went there for our anniversary. Had the chef's choice. Pricey, but very good.great place to go for a special occasion.
Excellent small plates perfect for sharing and creating conversation between old friends meeting up a new. Service was knowledgeable and friendly. Great place!
Went for Mothers Day dinner. They had a prix fixe menu, which wasn't noted when I made the reservation. I was looking forward to ordering off the menu and was disappointed in being limited in menu options. For future reference, let your customers know in advance if you're going to have a limited menu.
Been there before and lived it brought my 92 year old mom they only had expensive pre fixed menu said it was on website that way it wasn’t they ruined my mom and my mother’s day I actually cried so disappointed they didn’t even care
My pork chop was way under cooked. So they took my plate back and recooked it. Then bring my plate back with the a recooked pork chop, but everything else on my plate was cold at that point.
My wife and I love this place! And we'll always come back. I just have a few notes to consider for improving with relation to our specific experience.
• Having a non-dairy substitute for milk in coffees would be nice. Perhaps the coffee philosophy there is particular, and as a former barista I can certainly understand an aversion to vegan "milk" products, but with so many opting for alternatives and in some cases requiring the omission of dairy in their diets, it's truly helpful.
• While the Mother's Day brunch menu was wonderful, the main course selections were not particularly vegetarian friendly. I will say the kitchen was kind and accommodating to the one person in our party who was vegetarian. We appreciate the adjustment to the dish.
• The website does not display the brunch menu. Or at least I had a lot of trouble finding anything.
• I could not find any listing for the special Mother's Day brunch menu either. We don't like to be fussy guests and this could have helped in our decision making and avoid having to be so particular in our order requests. As a rule of thumb, I generally try not to eat from places or special menus if I believe I would have to request more than one or two very simple accommodations.
• Hats off to our server for his patience, politeness, attentiveness, and kindness. Hats off to the kitchen staff as well for being flexible.
• All the staff were tremendously friendly and polite and always are. That really effects our opinion of a restaurant.
Thanks for reading! - JR
The four of us shared small plates. All were excellent. Standouts included the smokey vegetable hummous, the duck breast (tender!) and grilled octopus. Good wine selection, but a but pricey for a glass. Noisy and crowded when we were there, but the food was worth it!
Wish the weather would warm up because we enjoy sitting in the back. But we had the nice 2 person table in the corner so the privacy was nice. Great food as always. We order a couple small dishes as we go and just keep adding until we're full.
Overall, I enjoyed this place, yet there were some hits and misses. The prices were a little out of line for Berwyn, more like a Randolph Street restaurant. I loved the grilled octopus and the portion for a small plate was generous. We also tried the shrimp and polenta. Didn't care much for the shrimp, which were served head-on, but the polenta was outstanding! The beet salad was another standout-very ample portion served with a yummy goat cheese yogurt sauce. On the down side, the lamb ribs were unavailable so my table mate ordered the lamb meatballs instead, which were burnt and dry, so we had to send them back. The server was friendly and the place was quiet enough to actually have a conversation, so I would give it another try.
One of our favorite restaurants in the Chicago area! Always an interesting menu, and unusual, great tasting wines.
I would recommend for drinks with friends. The food menu looks great but our party of 4 was told after we ordered that food was not brought out together but "as it was prepared." This meant Amish chicken came out at 9:00, gnocchi came out it 9:10, the pork porterhouse and the steak frites came out at 9:15. Also, not ADA accessible.
Food was very good, and prices are reasonable. I can’t fully recommend, because the tables are so close together, and It’s too noisy to have a private conversation. The service was OK, not great.
The service was good, as were the cocktails but 2 of 2 steaks were over cooked. Still edible but beyond the temperature requested.
Our server offered to remake them but we were time constrained.
Overall food was just ok, a bit disappointing because I heard great things about this place. I had to send my steak back because it was under cooked and then it took forever to get it back and when I did it was cold so it was obvious it was just sitting under warming lights for much if the time. The service was bad.
We ordered the chef’s tasting menu because it seemed the best way to try a wide variety from the menu for just 2 people. It was perfect.
Autre Monde was lovely. The service was prompt. The ambiance was nice (and not too loud). The food (with the exception of the prawns) was lovely. Honestly, probably the only downside to the night was the prawns, which we usually like. Otherwise, we had amazing bacalao, several great wines, and a beautiful risotto, among other things. Portions were reasonable. It was a pretty space. What was pleasantly surprising was how accessible the restroom was. The front door is not wheelchair accessible, but there was only one step and I use a cane; having more grab bars in the restroom than your average accessible stall was wonderful. What's more, they accommodated my seating needs (not to be at a high-top table) that I requested ahead of time. I love it when places that have great food and great service are also accessible!
The restaurant has a charming feel to it. Small and intimate, and nicely decorated. The service was very good, but the food was uneven. The hummus and eggplant spread appetizer was very tasty, and the bacalao was perfectly cooked. But the meatball was very salty, and the octopus, while perfectly cooked, tasted like it had passed its "best by" date. For dessert, the cannoli were nice, but the fruit crumble was too large, had a low ratio of crumble to fruit, and is served without any dairy alongside (some ice cream would be helpful).
Charming place, and we had high hopes given the experience of the chefs. But we may have caught them on an off night. The value proposition was therefore not strong.
Entirely regrettable. We were sat at a table next to a table which had not been cleared of dirty dishes yet. When we left the restaurant over an hour later, the table next to us still had not been fully cleared or wiped down. Not so nice to eat your dinner looking at someone else’s dirty dishes. At one time there were 4 dirty tables sitting. When we left, there were six tables of people in the restaurant, and there was a dirty rag on top of one table that had almost been cleaned. The 2 waiters took turns checking on us. Waiter #1 (balding with glasses) was awful. He said waiter #2’s description of an appetizer I wanted was wrong. He ignored my request for a taster of 2 wines. He said that one of them was a better wine. When I asked again, he agreed to bring me a small taster of one of them. He never asked to take my husband’s wine order. He just turned and walked away to take care of another table. He was unpleasant and almost argumentative when we were just asking questions about the menu. My lamb meatball appetizer was almost raw in the middle. I sent it back, asking that it be fully cooked through. When it was returned, the two meatballs were not hot and still not cooked through. I did not eat them. Happily, I was not charged for it. I asked for salt and pepper for my entree. They do not have salt & pepper shakers, but gave me small containers of each. My husband ordered fish and chips. He asked for ketchup for his fries. They said they didn’t have any ketchup – the restaurant had run out on Friday, two days earlier. His fish had a lot of fried breading on it, and basically no fish inside. It must have been a very thin piece of fish. He did not eat the thick breading and scraped the little bit of fish out of the inside. My husband spoke to waiter #2 as we were leaving. He offered us a drink or free dessert for next time. We won’t return. Not worth it. Bad service. Don’t waste your money or the chance to of a perfectly good evening being ruined.
Trying to hard and swinging for the fences so not doing anything great. Really needed seasoning.
Amazing food and extraordinary service. Great job. You have out done yourselves!
Autre Monde special cocktails always fresh and exciting - The Cobbler and The Whisky Sour we’re right on target. Squash flatbread tasty but missing the Squash blossom? Meatball app was also perfectly done. Pork Porterhouse was nicely cooked and my wife’s Moroccan Veg Tagine was excellent. However, our service was not what we expect when we come to AM. We’ve been regulars for a long time and started coming when AM opened and then after the rehab from the fire. A combination of the food and service keep us coming back - and of course the wines from Croatia. We were perusing the wine menu and our server came back for our appetizer order. We ordered the apps and I ordered the Pork Porterhouse. The sever said that the orders are all meant to share and restaurant will split the order among two. She abruptly took the food menu and the wine menu. Upset - yes. My wife wanted her own order! We called her back and said we’d like to also order something else on the menu for my wife and also could we have the wine list back? Did we do something wrong? We have never heard that all meals must be split. As the customer, I feel we can order as much as we want! Anyway, this made us feel like maybe we should not consider this our favorite place. Is the magic gone? We did order the Crljenak Kastelanski and thoroughly enjoyed this robust wine. I think our server was just having a bad day and we will not make a rash decision not to come back. Next visit will tell the tale.
Reliably one of our absolute favorite restaurants in the area. Great staff, great drinks, great food.
Apps were better than main dishes.
Food and service are great. It gets loud as the place is a bit small.
I love AM. I’ve been going since they opened and the food has always been tasty. It’s is simply a wonderfully consistent and enjoyable experience. When it comes to a cocktail or wine just ask. Eric, who seems to always be there, knows his adult drinks! Love it!
Fantastic Mediterranean in the heart of suburban Chicago!
Always delicious interesting flavors. One of our favorite places. We often retake out-of-town guests to Autre Monde.
Have not been to Autre Monde in a while and I forgot how amazing the food is! The duck sausage flatbread has a perfectly crisped crust and the right balance of ingredients to make every bite heaven! We had the octopus and vegetarian tangine as well, which did not disappoint and are my go to favorites as well.. Great service and wonderful selection of orange and more complex white wines. Will be going more often!
It was our wedding anniversary and our first time to Autre Monde. What a wonderful experience. There were so many items I wanted to try that we decided to order the tasting menu. Server suggested a bottle of wine that complimented the tasting menu and it was wonderful. We can't wait for our next visit. Thank you for a great evening!
Great mix of flavors and innovative food and drinks. The dessert- pot de creme is my favorite!
