Ashoka - Upper West Side
Saturday evening they have a live jazz band; very entertaining; and the noise level was still reasonable to have a conversation. Loved the cauliflower and also the mushroom appetizers.
Food, service and atmosphere were fantastic. Had a great time with our friends.
I invited friends from out of town who love to eat Indian food. We all agreed that the dishes we had were excellent.
great place--excellent food and service in a nice atmosphere. Everything was tasty-mushroom appetizer, samosas, tandoori salmon, lentils. Mellow jazz on some weekend nights.
We were so happy that Ashoka opened up again! It is the best Indian restaurant on the upper west side. Everything was excellent. The live music is just a bonus!
Glad they have reopened after several months. Great food and nice jazz on Saturday evening.
Thank goodness they are back after the fire. The Nilgiri lamb korma was excellent and we can't wait to try more dishes.
Got to the restaurant and it was closed. Why didn’t we receive notice?
Restaurant was closed. Walked there in rain. What. Waste!
Despite accepting our booking, the restaurant was closed
We arrived and it was closed for renovation this should not be available to book - waste of an evening
j'ai pris une réservation mais ils étaient fermés !
Can’t lose with the Paneer Tikka Masala. Every time I go to Ashoka or order in at home, the food is delicious, fresh and oh so satisfying. Far surpasses the other local spots in my book in terms of portion size, price, and flavor. More bang for your buck here than Swagat, Saravana, or Alachi Masala. Plus the staff at Ashoka have made continual effort to make their service better and better since they opened a few years ago - and it shows! Live music was also a nice touch Friday night - smooth and perfect levels. Thank you Ashoka!
I love coming here! Every time the service is exceptional. The food is fantastic (and constantly trying new things) and the ambience is perfect. Friday and Sat nights they have a jazz band that is lovely, but not too loud that you can't enjoy your meal. So glad I found this neighborhood gem.. Don't miss out..
Food is good, place is pleasant. But our group of seven was sitting near the music and that made it very difficult to have a conversation. We had to ask several times for serving utensils. We were sharing dishes and serving utensils were not provided.
People at our table wanted dark beer and that was not available.
Finally, an Indian restaurant that actually serves flavorful, spicy food. We had a variety of foods ranging from eggplant bharta to lamb vindaloo.
We got two appetizer orders of the tandoori mushrooms. They went fast. The lamb vindaloo and the chicken vindaloo were great but I liked the chicken vindaloo best. Lamb boti kabab was chunks of marinated tandoori lamb. Very good. The eggplant bharta disappeared very fast.
It was a great dining experience.
Delicious food nicely presented and courteously served in a lovely but casual setting. Live jazz on the weekends, but otherwise a quiet room.
We turned up at 1130 am as booked on open table. The restaurant was closed!!!! Super annoying. Please do not say you are open for reservations but are not open.
The tandoori salmon was absolutely divine, and there were several vegetarian options to choose from - so something for everybody. The live jazz was an unexpected treat!!!
Outstanding brunch/lunch special with appetizer, main (veg or meat) including naan, lentils a vegetable side and rice pudding for a very reasonable price. Food is interesting, very tasty and beyond the standard fare. Service is great.
Excellent Indian fare. Tables were a bit cramped for sharing dishes, but manageable. Wait staff was very friendly, but got a bit thin when the dinner rush picked up. Worth a visit!
Food was delicious and plentiful, not too noisy in back room, and the low key 3 piece combo was nice background music.
Excellent food and service. Live music was very nice.
Food was really good and the live jazz was a great touch without being over bearing noise. Good and reliable Indian food for the neighborhood.
Food was absolutely delicious! The manager of the restaurant was incredibly attentive, and ensured our table was pleased.
Very solid food. We had a delicious shrimp app, very good saag paneer and great eggplant bharta. There was also live jazz, which was very nice.
This is a nice restaurant. I liked the food a lot with a ton of vegetarian options. The service was great and they are very accommodating and attentive.
Really nice place. Very tasty food, with a good selection. Very friendly attentive service. Pretty inside-nice ambiance--well spaced tables.
Excellent food, wonderful music and nice people. What a great combination for a nice evening.
The sauces were great as were the apps, vegetable fritters, breads, chutneys, etc. However, all our dishes were overcooked. The Chicken Tikka was dry and barely edible. My husband had goat curry and the meat was extremely overcooked in chunks. Our guest had a fish dish and he said it was overcooked and the other guest had a vegetarian dish that she liked vey much. Nice place, nice people, nice jazz in the background. Too bad.
Can’t get enough of this place. My go to!
Food was excellent! Attentive service. Live music was lovely!
Check it out
After reading the high points of live music, a decent wine list, and innovative Indian food, we were disappointed to find piped in techno music, half the wines unavailable, and a filthy bathroom. Granted, the food was quite decent, especially the Tarragon chicken Tikka, but the rest was a stretch. Easy fixes if the management pays attention...
Very poor service. Great deal. But poor service. Food was ok
Everything was pretty great except for the speed.
Recommended for the quality of food.
The food and the service were exceptional.
I was skeptical of the really positive reviews here and elsewhere, suspecting they had been planted by restaurant staff and other supporters. But after eating there, I have shelved my skepticism. My wife and I had a very tasty shrimp appetizer, and then an excellent lamb korma and paneer dish. Service was very solicitous, and the restaurant is quite attractive inside. I judge Asoka to be the best Indian restaurant on the UWS, and one of the best in NYC. Oh, they charge only $10 corkage if you bring in a bottle of wine.
Great place for together
One hour before we got food
Every time we asked for something we had to do it more than once
They need to organize themselves better food is really good operations are not
