Ascua - Spanish Woodfire Grill
Good but not great!
Nice food, poor value. Might be better to try meat and wine Co next time.
Simple but interesting menu and sides. Great flavours all round. Nice staff with service quite spread out time-wise so not the best choice if you’re in a rush. Otherwise enjoy the food and ambience!
A lovely meal served by friendly, yet professional, staff. Our only complaint was that we had tickets to a show at His Maj and thus had to leave much earlier than we would have liked.
Was there for a friend's birthday dinner. The starters and mains were superb. Everyone enjoyed what was ordered. Birthday boy even commented that it was the best steak in Western Australia.
Then came the dessert which was the let down of the night. They were not very nice. The brulee was coarse, tasted burnt. The dark chocolate dessert I ordered was too rich and overpowered by the rum(?) soaked cherries. What a disappointing way to finish an other wise pleasant dinner experience.
Would I recommend any friends? Yes, but advice would be to stay away from the dessert.
We enjoyed our night out at Ascua & will call again. Good GF choices on the menu too.
We had a dinner for my husband’s family to celebrate his birthday. The meal was spectacular. We ordered a 1.5 kilo beef tomahawk, medium grilled. It was grilled perfectly and it was delicious! We also ordered chips for the children, and roasted pumpkin and broccoli. We were most impressed with the excellent service and that we were greeted with complimentary foods at the table. Thanks Ascua for the excellent night out.
Second time at Ascua - not as good as we remembered. My wife and I took our twins on their 21st birthday. Swimmer crab, paella, smoked carrots, pumpkin all excellent. We got the seafood platter to share between two, based on our previous experience. On this occasion we were disappointed. Mainly fish. 4 prawn heads and only 3 prawns. Waitress said that the usual portion is 2! I think that meat eaters would fare better - the tomahawk steaks looked spectacular. Deserts were very good. Fairly limited wine list but a good mixture of Australian, Spanish and Portuguese bottles.
Shared the seafood grill between 3 of us as an entree and the Tomahawk for main. Both cooked on a grill over charcoal which added to the flavour.
Both fantastic and generous servings.
Staff friendly and helpful.
Best way to describe it is to say it’s “fine”. Food was ok, nothing particularly wrong with it but certainly not particularly remarkable. Service was fine but a little slow. All in all, I wouldn’t bother to go again.
The service and food were outstanding. We will definitely be returning with our friends and family.
I like this restaurant for its authenticity and great tasting food. It has quickly become a favorite and makes some of the more famous and ostentatious in Perth mediocre No Need to go to the casino for a steak, this beats it hands down.
I like to eat things I cant make at home and this restaurant manages to do that with basic ingredients that we have at home.
Beautiful place. Good menu but a little more choice would have made it more enjoyable for me.
Think I will return again.
Hi KathyT, Thank you for your review and we look forward to welcoming you back again soon. Many thanks, Frances (Marketing Executive)
Not much choice for vegetarians or non meat eaters.
We were going to the Ballet 7.30 (booked 6pm) and had to cancel desserts as took too long.
We only had mains!
Great staff who made suggestions on what goes best with different dishes. Knew their wines too & stocked a good variety. Tasty food well presented. Staff were also very attentive to our highly allergic seafood friend. Great customer service. Thank you Ascua. We will be back after the ballet next time :)
The staff are great! Great service and great food! Will be back for sure.
We loved the atmosphere at this place. The food was delicious and presented beautifully. The crab entree is a must try and the octopus was cooked perfectly. The service we received was spot on. Friendly, attentive and timely. Would definitely recommend this place.
We had a fabulous night at Ascua. We decided to go with their recommendation and have the share options and it was amazing. Perfect choice but sadly no room for dessert. The staff were warm, friendly and engaging. I would thoroughly recommend this restaurant for the wonderful food, terrific staff and warm ambiance. We can’t wait to return and try more menu options.
Great food, good service and lovely ambience! We had the 1.4kg tomahawk to share (among other dishes), and the meat was outstanding! Medium rare perfection with just the right amount of chargrill, and even the fat melts in the mouth. The wine selection was also fantastic, overall a good meal.
We will definitely return!
Fantastic service, awesome steak. A great place for gathering with friends.
We have been to Ascua twice and both times we were thrilled with the experience. Entering this restaurant is an experience in itself with the aromas of a well managed open kitchen and grill adding to our expectations. The menu is Spanish with focus on quality Ingredients perfectly prepared and presented with style. The wait staff is knowledgeable about the dishes on offer and we had useful help with selecting a wine. I particularly like the way the staff are trained to be available but not hovering and they certainly do not interpret our conversation with any insipid “how’s your meal?” that I find so annoying at many Perth restaurants. I really cannot fault this dining venue.
We went on Monday night for our anniversary. We ordered the sangria jug and it was So nice.
I had the crab starter which was nice for the first few bites. As someone who never complains about portion size the dish was very large for the fact that the avocadi/lime was so extremely over powering in flavour .If it was half the size it would have been much more balanced. I couldn't finish.
For mains I had pork belly which was delicious. We shared the pumpkin and buttermilk cauliflower. The pumpkin was an absolute star of the meal.
My husband ordered the tomato ricotta starter which was fresh and delicious.
His main was the dry aged blade. He ordered medium rare and it came out very rare which normally he wouldn't mind but he said it was very chewy and was very disappointed.
We think our order was forgotten as we had people come in about half an hour after us and were served mains before us therefore I feel the steak was rushed as we waited quite awhile. Not to mention we were one of the first tables seated (apart from the booths).
Our waitress was very lovely.
Overall it was a lovely experience and the food for the most part was delicious.
Anything from the Ascua grill is delicious but be prepared for large portions! The crab and avocado starter was generous with crab but the avocado was heavy handed. Oysters were nice, although not local. The steak on the bone was perfectly grilled on the amazing BBQ, although too large for two people and the sirloin was equally tasty. The one truly Spanish dish was the salt cod paella which was more like salt cod on rice. Good in it's own way but a tad disappointing if you wanted an authentic Spanish paella. The wines list could use an upgrade as the wines we were recommended were unremarkable at the price. It was a very good and relaxed experience but is not yet great.
It was an outstanding dining experience and the food was beautiful and fresh as well as a taste sensation for the taste buds. I have eaten Gamon all over the world and the Acorn fed Gamon was the best I have ever eaten. Will be back .....soon
Very good food, service and ambiance. I love everything!
Amazing food and great service. Would highly recommend this place.
Beautiful venue, however the food was not particularly interesting and very expensive for what it was.
The food was great, the Octopus & Broccolini were amazing, really enjoyed the meals and will go back to try some more.
the only negative was being mislead on by the glass/bottle products when ordering, thought we had bought a bottle and was charged by the glass, this was a big disappointment and wrecked the great night we had. We will see what happens next time and hopefully it was just inexperienced staff on the night.
Ascua is the whole package, from the moment we walked in till the end, Ascua is a completely satisfying dining experience.
The food is full of flavour, impeccably balanced and presented with finesse. The ambiance is conservatively stylish but without pretence, with Spanish music present without being dominating and the lighting was cleverly lit throughout.
Now, the service...... the service was the best I’ve experienced in Perth since living here (15 years) and I have been fortunate in my life to have had many spectacular dining experiences from all around the world.
Ascua have a wonderful team of people giving the diner a fulfilling dining experience, my husband and I left Ascua after celebrating our 16th Anniversary feeling happy and relaxed and with the knowledge of wonderful memories made.
Thank you Ascua ... you will see us again soon.
Fresh food and friendly service. However, much too many mosquitoes for comfort. Told our server and even he says he struggles with the amount of mozzies here in summer on a daily basis. Not even kidding, there were more than ten mozzies coming at us left, right and centre. Management should use mosquito coils or something to get rid of the mozzies - not particularly enjoyable being dinner for mozzies when you are having dinner here.
We had another excellent night at Ascua. This time we had the tomahawk steak (between 2) for main and shares the cuttlefish entree, which was a good amount of food for the start of a long weekend. The tomahawk is very well seasoned and cooked with a delicious charred crust!
Acusa is a good restaurant. We enjoyed it. The food is very tasty and reasonably priced (for Perth CBD). The service is very good: attentive but not intrusive, without extended delays. We were easily able to get to the theatre in time. The ambiance is very nice: smart decor, and a reasonably low noise level. It's possible to have a conversation with your companions without strain - something which impossible at too many restaurants these days. Parking nearby is handy and inexpensive for a night at the theatre. Our second visit, and we will return.
The main courses that the five of us had were all of the highest standard—imaginative, delicious, and well presented. The dessert that two of us had was similarly excellent; however a fork would have helped along with the spoon provided. The service was efficient, and we had no time difficulty in making the show at His Majesty's following the dinner.
I have been to this restaurant a few times and each time leaves me wanting me to come back for more.
In particular the chicken,its amazing.
Staff are wonderful and always manage to get me a table when I ring on the day.
I will be back soon.
Not Sure, its changed from the last time i was there..for the worse unfortunately .
The best meal out in a long time - their expertise in wood fired cooking was so so good. Our Cuttlefish starter was so tender and the mains of Pork Belly (large serve) and Chicken on sweetcorn was just so moist and tender.
We cannot wait to go back..
Amazing service and food, could not have been a better dining experience
Tomahawk was not a good cut, and not well prepared. It was expensive do should have been great.
Great food and wine. Nice atmosphere, service good. We all had a great evening.
Food was good. Unfortunately we couldn't choose the weight of tomahawk.
And the bench was a little unconfortable.
