Everything was great about our experience from service to ambience. The fried chicken sandwich was overly salted that it was impossible to eat more than a few bites. But all other dishes were excellent.

American Son is an excellent restaurant with superior service. Their manager, Brock, was knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. He is a definite asset to the front of the house and the food was absolutely some of the best that I have had in DC.

American Son is simply outstanding — this was my first time here. It outperformed several Michelin starred restaurants in the city, particularly in terms of the food. I am a chef myself, and the beef cheek was one of the finest tasting dishes I’ve ever had! Additionally, Chef KC came out and was very accommodating of eating gluten-free; most of the dishes could be amended. Perhaps the only critique is that despite the elevated food, the ambiance was perhaps too casual (that being said, I’m sure they have to accommodate Eaton Hotel guests wanting to lounge). It’s truly the spot to be, so try it on a buzzing night for the best experience.

Food was good, but not worth the price. Wait staff was very condescending. Service was very rushed - we were asked for our dinner order within 4 minutes of sitting down, and all of our food came out almost immediately.

I really like this place. I think the food is creative, attractive and flavorful. It is pricey, but the quality of ingredients gives it value. Wine list is limited, but once you understand why its not as troubling, although some fine wines should still be available vs. the locally sustainable and small batch offerings. We were seating in the back basically in the kitchen. Some people think this is fun but I find it distracting and noisy. Ask for a table or booths away from that area and all should be fine. Be sure to visit the rooftop lounge and the speakeasy for atmosphere, cocktails and great people watching. Service is strong but basic; managers are buzzing about and keep things moving nicely.

Dined here with a group of 4 on Friday night. Was disappointed by the lack of crowd and the table we were given. We requested a change to a booth and that was the right call. The cocktail menu is a bit limited - but I enjoyed the ginger cocktail. We requested that our meal be coursed because we wanted to linger a bit over our dinner - and everything came out at once within 15 minutes of ordering - a bit disappointing. The quality of the food was good - I specifically enjoyed the shishito peppers and the scallops. A bit overpriced also

I brought my parents here for dinner on a night that they were visiting DC. We all loved it. Chef Tim even came by our table to greet us and ask us about the experience. Our waitress was delightful and gave us a full run-down of the menu's unique options. My mom is vegetarian and the waitress was able to accommodate her restrictions and point out the veg options, while also making modifications on some traditionally non-veg dishes. Some highlights included the house-made ricotta, potato croquettes, lamb rigatoni, spaghetti squash, and tofu gnocchi. The ambiance was lovely and because the tables are well spread out -- unlike some other restaurants in DC -- we could have a nice dinner conversation without needing to scream to be heard. I am totally behind this restaurant's food and unique story. I will be back!!

We found American Son to be interesting and innovative. Outside on the rooftop of the Penthouse bar was fun also. Guests were roasting marshmellows and eating tacos. Very different experience.

The food was excellent. We received a lot of attention. We asked for extra cracker to come with the cheese (ricotta) and we were charged an extra $3 for these. Considering the price of the dishes (tappas types) it was a bit inappropriate.

My wife and I had the vegan Pork Hash and it was just ok. It was heavy on the meat substitute with not many vegetables or potatoes included to make you feel like it was a balanced dish.

Perhaps the most disappointing meal I’ve had in a while. Our server Natasha was fantastic and professional, but the food was well below average. Over cooked steak and a Valentine’s Day desert that tasted like it came out of the freezer.

First off, we can’t say enough good things about Tim Ma. He is the nicest person to meet and runs a great restaurant. His cooking is some of the best and perhaps most underrated in the city. Great date night spot!

My husband and I went on a date night to American Son. The restaurant offered an intimate setting and a wonderful overall experience. He loves meat and I love vegetables. We both loved the food. We found the cocktails to be delightful. The loved the potato croquette, whole fish entree and passion fruit dessert. They were unique and perfectly prepared.

I stopped for a quick lunch between meetings. I had the butternut squash bowl which had good flavors and textures. Wish I had ordered the soup. In a weak moment, I ordered the white album. Strange combination of white sweets like tapioca and other stuff in a soup bowl. It was lacking in garnish and presentation. The service was OK, my server was attentive and sweet, but a lack of attention to detail in presentation.

The food scene in Washington is alive and well! Chef Tim Ma's, American Son, is an amazing new addition to the food scene here in DC. The menu is very creative and the food was just amazing! I highly recommend it!!!

this place is great! great service and a very dynamoc menu! I had the duck dish twice and it was great and slightly different each time. good beers and cocktails. and a great speakeasy in the building for after dinner drinks. also love the 90’s hip hop they play in the place! takes me back!

Wanted to love this place but couldn't. The music was so loud that I could barely catch up with girlfriends and I'm only 28. The table height was also off. We sat at a 4-top in the back room (Not a booth) and the table was too high for those sitting on the bench side. Friends in the chairs were OK, but it was really poor planning. Add that to a $28 price on about 10 tofu gnocchi, and we won't be back.

Ask the waiters for their recommendations or what the most popular items are - there’s a reason why they’re the hits. The tofu gnocchi was amazing, and would even fool a tofu hater into loving it. Look forward to returning again soon.

Unfortunately for a menu that was meant to be special and thought out, the explanation of the experience wasn’t explained well by the server. The duck; which I was really looking forward to after having duck at so many other places, and styles, only gave a filling feeling, not a satisfied or inspiring feeling.....except learning of the small liver like pellets tucked in the neck.....still chips of scallion pancakes was not the impression I was given or what I wanted. The eggplant was fried well but flavored for a very basic palate, and the ketchup shrimp just was a good dish from a past life. The issues with service I would rather not detail, but when I know I look like I’m looking for someone to show attention and multiple people walk past multiple times. Finally the actual experience with the plates was just a stack of food on food, that did not give time to savor any type of experience. I can understand a server not making the right decision on how a meal should go, but going through a kitchen and management who were clearly present. It was a fail on all counts.

Already have told several local folks about it and the Speak Easy and will always eat there when I come to DC. I’m from Oklahoma so I’m telling locals so it will have the business it needs!!!!

I thought the Chinese New Year menu was very bland. Everything sounded good but the execution was poor except for the eggplant. Service was clumsy and it seemed like there was some discord/communication issues among the staff working the bar. Would not return based on my experience.

Ate our Chinese New Year dinner, which was wonderful by both Chinese (Cantonese) and American standards - super fresh ingredients, perfectly cooked, no overdone sauces. With a visit to taste the regular menu.

American Son is our new favorite restaurant. The food and service were first-rate. We were seated in the front room near the bar, and it seemed much quieter than the back room. Dwayne, our server, was very upbeat and knowledgeable about the menu. We followed all his menu recommendations and were very happy.

We had a nice table for two on the bar side of the dining area. The cozy bench seating on one side set the tone for a nice evening. We appreciated our server’s thorough explanation of the night’s menu offerings. We ordered the potato croquettes and shihito peppers for starters. The savory yet not overwhelming sauces made each one special. We shared the large format whole fried fish. It was crispy and crunchy on the outside and moist and succulent inside. Fantastic! The Vietnamese sauce was our favorite of the four sauces. The papaya salad and fried rice sides were a perfect complements. The Nutella dessert, cappuccino, espresso and grand marnier were a perfect finish to a fine evening. Thank you American Son!

Big fan of Kyrisan so it feels like American Son is still working out kinks in the kitchen. My beef cheeks were under seasoned. My friend’s steak frites were cold and the fries were meh. Cocktails were excellent, tho.

The restaurant is, in style and ambience, as lovely as the rest of the Eaton Hotel. I enjoyed delicious food prepared with fresh ingredients and great care. My tomato bisque was light and smooth and accented by tiny croutons that felt like clouds in my mouth and tasted lightly of butter. My fried chicken sandwich was juicy and delicious and perfectly accompanied with a delicious cole slaw. Service was attentive without being intrusive. The staff sweetly acknowledged my birthday. It was a perfect lunch!

The food was very good. The potato croquette appetizer was as amazing as detailed in other reviews. However, I found the portion sizes to be surprisingly small, relative to the description offered by our server. I had the scallop, which was comprised of three small scallops in a delicious, but paltry amount of red curry. My wife had similar thoughts about the beef cheek. Both dishes were delicious, but seemed more like small plates than entrees. Had we known that, we would have likely ordered the fried whole fish, but we thought at 32 oz., that it would be too much food.
