Lead by Chef Daniel Kill, Allegory emphasizes community dining through a small plate, multi-course, coastal Mediterranean influenced menu. Cocktails and wine are at the forefront of Allegory’s beverage program, which also taps local brew brands. Meanwhile, the private dining room offers an “off-the-menu” family-style dining experience.
Located in the ground floor of The MC Hotel, Allegory is the welcoming flagship of downtown Montclair.

Tried Allegory for the first time with my wife for our 2020 Valentine’s Day dinner. We were very pleasantly surprised because it only had a 2 and a half star rating. We enjoyed the potato encrusted cod and nicely sauced sliced strip steak. Ambience was classy and city-like even though we were in our own Montclair backyard! Service could be more prompt but we hope it will improve over time. Looking forward to going again and visiting the Alto outdoor rooftop bar with NYC views in the warmer weather after dinner.
The food was pretty good. My wife got the cod which she absolutely loved. I got seafood pasta which was ok. I really liked the pumpkin soup.
This place has all the potential in the world but the food is pretty bad and the drinks are good but $22.00 for an old fashion?!?!!! Not even in NYC. Sorry, don’t recommend this for the $$$
This place was amazing. Loved that it’s contemporary and the high ceiling was perfect. Could have done better with the food portion though but otherwise awesome. The colors and the music compliments the amount of space that they have. Their rooftop is a must see. Fantastic view and cocktails. We’ll definitely come back.👍
Waitress was amazing and overall service was great!
Nice service and nice food. The cod that I had was a little fishy, but overall the meal was lovely.
Excellent food and service. We were very happy with our meal.
It felt like all the workers were rushing even though our food and drinks took forever to get to us. The food was average at best but the drinks were goos
We were so very excited to try this place. We started with the focaccia bread which was sliced Italian bread with olive oil on it and tomato paste served on the side. Not really focaccia bread and not really good. We also had the eggplant which was good (not enough to really share) however the pita bread did not really go well with it and was cold. We also ordered a pasta dish which was excellent but a very small portion so we each got a fork each to taste. For the entrees, I got the chicken which was a stew and I seemed to get mostly cauliflower and a few pieces of chicken. My husband got the cod which was good but served bit cold and my daughter ordered the lamb chops which were very tasty. After all of this, yes we were all still hungry so we tried to order a dessert but they did not have the one we selected. The place has a good vide and the waitstaff was great.
Great spot. There is a rooftop where there is live music from 7:30-10:30 Thursday night. Highly recommend.
It's a pretty restaurant with a very limited menu. I wouldn't rush back.
The dessert was the best!
Service was great
Food was good but menu is limited
Overall, a Nice restaurant.
Food was excellent, servers need to be taught to come back to table and see how everything is. Ours never did.
It’s was great as I was able to have a business meeting in a quiet place.
Live string trio with amplified speakers was way too loud for conversation at brunch.
First time there but it won’t be our last.
No, anytime you mess up breakfast twice it is not good. I am talking eggs , asked for soft scramble got hard, my friend asked for Over Easy got Very Hard sent both back the second time kind of sort of got it right! So called hash fries were simple whole roasted fingerling potatoes.. absolutely no flavor. The pancakes were not fluffy more like crepes and very doughy sent them back.!!! I heard dinner is not much better, but if you CanNot make a decent breakfast I would not go back for dinner. And the bill was $52.50, I know we split a Bloody Mary... but if you are going to charge $15-$18 for eggs and one slice of toast it had better be GREAT!
Restaurant makes good crisp bacon and great Bloody Mary.
New Year’s Eve dinner menu. 5 courses with 2 options each. Our seating was to be at 9:00pm. We waited until 930 and asked if we would be seated soon. The hostess said the table wasn’t ready. There were more than 8 tables open. Manager came over and sat us at a table. We Ordered our 5 course choices and drinks. Half hour later the drinks came, then the salad/soup. Then half hour later the first course arrived, cold, and we ordered another drink. 35 minutes later we got our next course and no drink. Asked the waiter about our drinks he says oh i guess they forgot them at the bar. He goes to get them. 25 minutes later he comes back with one of our drinks. We tell him we have to be upstairs for the New Year’s Eve party we paid extra for by 1115. It is now 1050 and no dinner. Manager comes over, as well as the overly dry, due to being under a heat lamp dinner. We say forget it and don’t finish dinner or dessert. Manager says he’s sorry and would like to give us free
Champagne for our poor service. Never, ever going back again. It wasn’t even crowded.
The food was mediocre - We ordered the beef tartare, lamb ribs, the grilled octopus, and the slow cooked salmon, plus a Moscow mule and a goodfella. The tartare was severely under seasoned, as were the lamb ribs. The grilled octopus was 95% beans and 5% octopus. The salmon was fine, but the buttermilk sauce that came with it was essentially straight buttermilk and the salad had clearly spent too long in the fridge before serving, as it was very wilted. The Moscow Mule was served with flat ginger beer, although the goodfella was nice. There are many other better restaurants nearby, so I'd pass on this one and walk a block or two.
Delicious and upscale food, gorgeous NYC quality ambiance, service felt casual for the setting, but was still very good.
Server approached us to offer two different seating options for our party of 7, which was very thoughtful & we appreciated because one of the 7 was a toddler. The food was delicious & service was with a smile! We dined for brunch.
Food was not worth the money. It was low quality food masquerading as high-end food. Ambiance was nice and drinks were good. Service was great. Food was the main issue.
Went for dinner on a Tuesday night. There was a live jazz band. The dining room was so empty that we actually chose to eat by the bar instead. Menu is limited, which is OK, but definitely check ahead if you're picky. I had the salmon entree and it came out room temp. My friend had the steak, which looked good, but also room temp. Portions are on the smaller side, so we did end up having to go grab another bite after. Overall, not bad, but I won't be back on a weeknight.
We had Thanksgiving dinner at the buffet, and it was very well attended to by staff. We thought the food was very good, and service nearly impeccable.
food was beautifully presented excellent choices
Very cool ambiance-our waiter was very good knowledgeable. Appetizers really good. My steak cooked to my liking. Wine list not great. Want to go back and sit at the bar.
The food was fine, nothing special. Tiny menu, very bland ambiance and continuous loop of not pleasant background music. A hotel restaurant and nothing more.
Many people wrote about slow service. Kevin, our sever, was excellent! Great recommendations and timing was not an issue.
It was a Sunday night and it was fairly empty.
Portions are really small but tasty! And, as others have written, alcohol prices are over the top!!
When a new restaurant opens it is usually chaos for the first month or so so we usually wait and hope they work the kinks out. It seems to have paid off at Allegory as our first visit was just great. It was a Monday so it was fairly slow. Kevin was our waiter and he was very friendly and courteous. We shared the eggplant to start and then had the potato crusted cod and the Bolognese for our mains. All of the food was very good. Instead of dessert we headed up to the rooftop bar and it did not disappoint. We sat outside and the views are spectacular. Advice if you want to sit outside - dress warmly because the heaters while quite nice to look at provide little heat. We enjoyed everything about our experience at Allegory and will certainly return.
Food was definitely good. Service needs some improvement. Not as slow as some previous diners’ experience, but still not a well oiled, polished experience. Think there are some major disconnects between bar, kitchen and dining room service. Not sure what kind of management and rather training exists. But, the place was not full, saw several staff lurking in corners at times and borderline hiding and our main courses came out cold.
Very open space. But, needs some warmth or continuity. Bar was full. but pretty vibeless. No regrets. But one and done.
The experience was marred by the surprise cost of the cocktails. When we ordered a simple margarita we did not expect a price of $19 when their craft cocktails advertised on the menu are lower.
I LOVED dining at Allegory . The ambiance was so lovely and interesting. Beautiful decor A NY kind of restaurant in NJ
The food is light and delicious and healthy I had a fluffy soufflé /the salad was so fresh with a delightfully light dressing
Had a tough time choosing since I liked a lot of the choices on the menu We had a party of ten and everyone was pleased
The service was also superb and valet parking is a wonderful amenity
I think it will be a new favorite of mine Highly recommend!
The food and service was amazing. This place became my favorite restaurant in town. Definitely will be back.
Lovely bright space in the MC Hotel. Had brunch. Food was fresh, light and well prepared. Service was great. The space is beautiful. Have to try the lounge on the top floor! They even validate parking so don’t have the Montclair parking headache. Would definitely go back and try dinner.
Worst service I’ve experienced. Waited 2 hours for our entrees.
This was an extremely unpleasant experience. Although we enjoyed our time with friends, we didn’t get any food for 2 hours, had to BEG for water refills, could not get our waitress to come to our table, and the noise level was outrageous. The bathrooms were FILTHY - as in highway rest stop filthy. The food was terrible. Needless to say, we will NOT be returning.
Very nice. Restaurant is very new. I hope people discover it soon. Montclair needed a place like this.
The restaurant looks very nice. There was a large party that was having a great time, and you could hear it from across the restaurant. The service was good but not extraordinary. Waitstaff looks a bit inexperienced. The food was good portions were small for the price. I’ll be back in a few months. Will defend hit the bar again sooner.
