Tone down your expectations when dining at Alberto's: this is an osteria pretending to be a ristorante.
The place looked great: small, slightly hidden entrance takes you through a cinema-like corridor / waiting area to the dining lounge, including italo-cinema posters and a small bar to have your drink while you wait. The lighting was great, as was the art-deco like design of the place. They managed to create a good feeling of coziness. Unfortunately, the coziness of the place gets drawn out quite literally by the very loud music.
Food-wise, I went for some antipasti, pasti & deserts. The olive oil, burrata and olives were of great quality! The pastas, however, did not manage to convince. The mushroom gnocchi were not bad in consistency, but a single flavour dominated the dish: porcini. The pork sausage rigatoni were a bit bland, lacking in complementing flavouring. Both portions were small for the price paid, given their average quality.
Our desert consisted of a French cheese and a "tiramisu". The cheese was noticeable cheap, but probably good by Australian standards. I expected the cheese to be served with bread, but I was not disappointed with the home-made sea-salt-encrusted crackers that it came with. They were interesting and went well with the cheese.
Then there was the "tiramisu". I hope there were no Italians working in this establishment, because I fear their brothers and sisters would surely revoke their nationality after trying the tiramisu à la Alberto: vanilla ice cream sprinkled with Milo powder. I dug around hoping to find any base, but couldn't find more than a spoon full.
Service was okay, depending on the waiter. We had an older waiter who served us great. His younger counterpart, unfortunately, was too preoccupied prancing around with his golden chains and chatting with his mates, so our wine came after our antipasta and we never got our limoncellos.
Overall verdict: an okay dining experience, but definitely not worth the money.
Amazing atmosphere (don't go if you are claustrophobic). Food was reasonably priced and deliciously memorable. Service was attentive despite the restaurant being very busy and at capacity. Music was loud, energetic, made you feel like part of the scene. At one point a Boney M song came on and the whole restaurant sung along to it. Can't wait to go back.
Amazing fresh homemade pastas and fantastic service ! Dessert menu also great!
Delicious food and the service was attentive and staff friendly. Only slight downside was it was rather noisy and it was hard to carry conversations in this cozy place. But would go again!

The tables were squashed together. My partner had to keep squishing in to let people / waiter squeeze by. Looking out on razor wire and an alley was under whelming.
Our waiter seemed the worse for wear apparently;y after a serious night on the town. He either needs a shave or needs to grow a proper beard. He also was in desperate need of a hair cut. Grey scraggly hair with a biro stuck in his bun is NOT a good look. He was obviously not interested in providing good service.

The restaurant is not as impressive as the photos would suggest. I did like the decor and ambiance .
I commenced my dinner with a positive feeling in this eclectic restaurant. The menu was disappointingly limited although I did enjoy my meal that I had. There seemed to be only three waiters for the whole restaurant. The service was very poor as the waiters were unable to to service the customers. ( at times we had to pore our own wine). We went to the 5:30pm session and they could only offer one cheese for the cheese board as they had run out !!!!! Amazing !!! I wanted coffee but they would only serve expresso. It did not live up to its review in the Weekend Australian.
One staff member carrying the whole team, the rest seemed lost. Was SO loud. We had a booking and were ignored in the “line”/waiting area/drinks area. So confusing. Had to book online as there’s no number and we requested bar seating for a birthday, the system makes you choose seating and an occasion and our choice was ignored. Don’t show up without a reservation we went at 9 on a Wednesday and the place was packed with people walking out of the line, not bothering to wait. Food was decent but pretty expensive for what we got. Our food also rocked up before our caraffe had made it to the table which was a bit of a worry in our opinion.
Wine pairing was awesome, so knowledgeable about the food.
The venue is well appointed and has been improved since incarnation as Berta. Carpet has dampened the noise levels which is welcome and the leather banquette is extremely comfortable. The food is easy and is prepared to share. Service is friendly and efficient. Booking can be difficult as they allow mostly for walk-ins during peak booking times 6:30-8:30pm. overall a very enjoyable local dining experience. Forgot to mention the bar is extremely inviting and they mix a great cocktail.

Excellent and personal service from Shaun contributed to a great evening, coupled with the food and intimate atmosphere. Definitely will recommend and be returning !
