Second Course: Three Pasta Dishes
Fried Squid Rings, Tentacles, Hot Slice Peppers. Served with Tomato Sauce and Lemon
Al Dente was bustling on Saturday night. We elected to eat outdoors, which was a good choice as the inside was crowded and noisy. The food was good -- not great (except for their foccacia basket) -- and service was very slow, perhaps because they were also doing a brisk carry-out business or because they are having trouble recruiting kitchen staff (our waiter was very attentive, the food was just slow coming from the kitchen). We were delighted, however, to find Happy Hour applied to Saturday evenings as well, so the price of several house specials was very good. Al Dente is definitely a good neighborhood spot, and that showed with the number of families that were present.
Delightful outdoor eating featuring that brilliant chef, Roberto Donna, I’m told. Whoever, the creation of rigatoni with truffles, crispy shredded leek , is scrumptious.
great outdoor seating. (inside can be noisy though)
Good, as always, is great. Al Dente has service issues (typical these days) that really take away from the experience. Sat with water only and no waiter for 30 mins before getting anyone to assist. Appetizer didn’t come until the entree, and then one entree didn’t come at all. Was easy to see they were short staffed, but if that is the case you don’t stuff the restaurant full of people. That’s a true recipe for disappointment.
They were trying very hard but we were not seated until almost an hour after we arrived.
I don’t know what’s happened to Al Dente. Over the years I’ve been here frequently and always had wonderful food and drink. But this latest lunch was dismal. The pastas were swimming in sauces that managed to be both thin and gloopy. The “chicken” in one looked and tasted as if it had come out of a can. My companion sent his back and I could only eat about 1/.3 of mine before giving up. The bread and wine were fine. Maybe this is because of staff shortage due to pandemic? I hope they get back up to speed.
We had pizzas which were fresh and tasty. The service was good, and the food was served promptly. A separate salad unfortunately suffered from a very bitter dressing, but the focaccia bread was excellent. We eat outside in a quite attractive setting. In the past we have been disappointed in the quality of the pastas at Al Dente, but think that maybe pizzas are their forte. We will be back to try them again.
As we dined on the outside patio, noise level was not an issue. For almost $13 the zucchini blossoms (while very good) were on the pricey side. There were only 3 and the plate was filed w a bunch of tempura zucchini sticks. The 2 personal pizzas were fine and the waiter was great about accommodating requested variations from the menu and boxing leftovers.
Extraordinary pizzas and first class Italian fare. A neighborhood gem. Keep it to yourself!
Went to try it for restaurant week and was disappointed. They were out of calamari and my fried zucchini flower appetizer had one very small one plus a bunch of zucchini fries. My bronzino and spinach were good but came with nothing else. If you have an appetite not the dish for you. My son’s calzone was good, the crust was delicious so I guess pizza dishes are the way to go. His prosciutto was good but the burrata that came with it was a 1/4 of one and presentation was poor for both appetizers. The roll was delicious, even the olive oil. The gelato seems store bought but good. One of the cooks wat yelling to the waitstaff from the kitchen in Spanish, almost the whole hour we were there. Felt like I was in a market, not a nice one. Won’t be going back, if we want a good pizza we prefer the ambiance at Comet or 2 Amy’s
Food was cold and under seasoned.
The veal scallopini was served in a bowl, drowning in a brown gravy and so bad it couldn't be finished. The bronzino was overcooked and was likely frozen. It was very dry and tasteless. A great fish ruined. The spinach that came with the bronzino was served in a formed shape and was tasteless, stringy and tasteless. The espresso martinis were very mediocre. We left hungry because we couldn't finish our meals and went to Chef Geoffs next door for another drink and an appetizer.
Beet salad: did not live up to description, mainly lettuce with a few diced beets
Grilled branzino: decent, but nothing special
Gelato: lemon nice tart finish to meal, mango too sweet
Ambiance was casual, with a sparsely attended happy hour going on next to us.
This would be okay for a neighborhood spot and we saw several customers who were enjoying it that way. But the prices can only be justified by a special meal, which this was not. Happy with service.
First time trying this restaurant. Staff was very friendly and courteous. Me and my guest were even given a complimentary glass of champagne. The restaurant is casual, but nice. Great for dates and small group of four. Went for restaurant week. Food was good but they were out of a favorite appetizer, calamari. The other items were great nonetheless. Definitely worth trying.
Nice place to eat on patio. Nice umbrella over table to keep you shaddy
Favorite restaurant in the north end!
Great spot to reconnect with friends. Food was yummy and service very good!
outstanding service. Food does not seem to be as good as before. Margarita pizza is not the best anymore. pasta was ok but not as good as it sometime was for italian food. But service is great.
We are frequent diners at Al Dente and love it. Our favorite waitress is Jenny! We ask for her each time we dine.
This has become our go to spot for a great pizza!
Enjoyed our meal and server!
Excellent food and service. Fun atmosphere and decor. Great for pasta dishes. Loved the zucchini blossoms appetizer!
The drinks and starters arrived in a timely fashion but we waited for 50 minutes for the entrees. The place was not at all busy which makes the delay inexcusable. Manager kept walking around apparently unaware of what was going on. Some of the food was excellent, some just so-so.
Delicious food, great service.
The outdoor dining area is lovely. table distance fine, conversations nearby not overheard. wait staff attentive but not overbearing.
I ordered eggplant parmesan which was served in a bowl rather than on a flat plate. The amount of eggplant was too sparse/ lots of parmesan/tomato sauce, too little actual eggplant. Tasty enough but I will not reorder. I advise serving on a flat plate and adding a small amount of some sort of pasta, to avoid the appearrance of "soup"
Delicious Pizza, pasta dishes and wine. Great outdoor space
We understand that all restaurants are in need of additional servers and so appreciate the delays in service, but one would hope that asking three times over 15 minutes would elicit a response.
Otherwise , fine.
Good Food. Good service. Nice outdoor seating. Prices high but everyone has high prices to make up for all the money they lost to Covid.
Our Happy Hour visit was outstanding! The neighborhood is also very nice
We keep trying happy because the prices are good, but the service is so inattentive. And you always have to ask for the happy hour menu. Don't hold happy hour if you don't want to make it pleasant. Food is good if you stick with salads and pizza.
I would highly recommend this restaurant. The host and waiters were great and they brought out tiramisu for my friend's birthday. I didn't love my dish, but that's just because I ordered something I wouldn't like. Great decor as well as indoor and outdoor seating.
Accommodated us nicely on the patio with friendly efficient service. Both 1st courses were delicious. Main courses were disappointing: bolognese was over seasoned with nutmeg, grilled branzino overcooked and under seasoned. Not what it once was,
We went to Al Dente on a Friday night. Scored a table outside - quite a festive atmosphere. We were too late for Happy Hour - which is great, by the way - so ordered off the main menu. We had the Bolognese which was quite good. We have eaten here many times and it is a go-to place for us.
They were busy but the service was still very good.
Happy hour prices makes it worth it. Good fried calamari, nice pizza selection, good wine/beer deals. Otherwise, the service is so slow and inattentive that the only thing that keeps you there is the happy hour pricing.
What a lovely restaurant; Friendly service, decent food for a good price and great atmosphere. Will definitely be back!
Food was quick and delicious. Great service by friendly waitor Roberto.
Poor food quality and poor service. I ordered meat and they did not ask how I wanted the meat cooked, they did it overcooked. Not recommended.
Al Dente is a neighborhood gem, and the service is superb. At a reunion dinner with friends the other night the fried calamari was a spicy hit, and the duck agnolotti with mushroom sauce was wonderful. Don't miss getting a side of focaccia -- even those who said they didn't want any dug into the basket of warm bread! The inside tables were not full, but it was still difficult to hear sometimes -- lots of hard surfaces -- so if you want more quiet, elect to eat outside or come at an off time.
The best happy hour in town - half price pizza and wine
It was great! Highly recommend this place if you love good food & good service!!
