Al Chulo is my all-time favorite restaurant. The margaritas are exceptional and the food ... oh the food!!! Always fantastic! So fresh and flavorful. Some may complain about the size of the tacos. I’m more about the flavors they pack into those things. Creamy or smooth salsas made from fresh peppers (you never know what the heat will be like on any given day because..nature!), the freshest most perfect guacamole, and all the tacos are wonderful but we are crazy about the shrimp ones. The Al Camaleon (I think that’s the way it’s spelled but you get the gist) is our absolute #1 favorite. Try it. Take your time. It’s all amazing.
A great place. Always past by it and finally made it in. Won’t pass by again
We will be back. Tapas was fun to share. Margaritas we very yummy. Recommendations from staff spot on.
We came here to celebrate a milestone birthday. The restaurant and its staff were very accommodating and made our event memorable. We started with some great specialty drinks, and an order of guacamole and chips and salsa and chips-love the 4 varieties of salsa! Then a tortas dish, 2 taco dishes and a salad, were even willing to add chicken to the salad. Finished off with a chocolate and banana birthday dessert-everything was wonderful. Thanks for making our evening special!
Al Chulo is a favorite of ours. It's #1 on the list of restaurants we introduce our friends to, and it's at least as good as Bien Trucha and Toda Madre (and better, in my opinion). The staff is friendly and accommodating. The Al Arroz Verde was a huge hit, and the fish tacos are the best around.
Our second time here. Food was incredible, service spot on. And the drinks delicious. Only down side was AC wasn't keeping up with the 100 heat index outside.
Will definently be back!
This is a Latin Fusion restaurant; the food and drinks are unique and different from any other Latin Food restaurant. The people are friendly and engaging. It's a treat to dine here.
It is the best upscale mexican food I have ever had. They also have fabulous drinks. I had the sangria and my friend had the original margarita.
Plates were Tapas style. Had steak tacos and beer battered tilapia tacos. Fish tacos were my favorite with a sweet coleslaw on top and I slice of avocado. Steak had a flavorful melted cheese and sauce that tasted great as well. Took a little longer to get the food than expected but they provided what looked like home made chips and salsa as an appetizer. Salsa had excellent flavor and chips were nice and crispy. Even better that the food was the drinks. Mojito tasted great with generous pours and mint garnish. The second drink I missed the name of but was a mango and tequila drink that may become my all summer drink. Glass was dipped in a chili pepper type seasoning, drink had a sweet mango taste with a second level of smokey flavor and the rim added to the experience. I loved the place and highly recommend.
Great food, probably best Mexican in the western suburbs. Consistent quality. Fresh drinks but a little on the pricey side. Service can be hit or miss.
Loved that the menu was not traditional and offered options that weren't loaded with onions and cilantro (both of which I avoid). Drinks were delicious. Adored the smoky, mild salsa. Portion sizes aren't huge, which was fine for us.
Only drawback was the intense fryer smell as you entered. Needed to air out our clothes when we got home.
Wanted to try a new place in our area. I made the reservations on Open Table and was a little surprised they didn’t have a system of knowing who or what about the reservations. But once we sat down, the service was great. The waiting staff was amazingly friendly and helpful. The food was awesome with great fusion drinks, good selections of Mexican fusion food and the presentation was top shelf. One of the staff came to apologize about the wait and comp’d us a couple of drinks. We loved the place and will be back with friends. Definitely recommend a visit.
Excellent food! Wonderful flavors, lovely presentation. Drinks were excellent! If you haven’t tried it, it is well worth the time!
Great mojito, so fresh! Delicious food.. Short on staff, but server let us know it was busier than usual (still open tables) and was very accommodating. I’d go back or try their other locations too.
This place is a total hidden gem! The tacos were amazing, great mixologists, salsas to die for. Will be back soon!
The food was excellent. Very authentic. The service was a little slow. It seemed like there was 1 bartender 1 cook 1 waiter/host n 1 water server.... but the waiter took care of off the tables ... very impressive. A little hard to find but not at all what it looks like inside. The outside is a little deceiving but inside is very upscale mood. Very small inside maybe 15/20 tables tops ... would go again
Camarera, waiters, were amazing. Made excellent recommendations, and were fun. Food popped with flavor. I've been to Geneva, LaGrange, and West Chicago locations. Each menu is slightly different so dont go expecting to get same things at each location. So far West Chicago and LaGrange are neck and neck as they were not as l8ad and over crowded as Geneva. Loved the rice, a must have at this location. More of a dip and done risotto style, amazing.
Our family loves this hidden gem in West Chicago. Their tacos are delicious, especially my favorite, the fish taco. We always end up more tacos as we can't get enough. The wait staff is very friendly and makes eating there even more enjoyable.
EVERY SINGLE BITE OF EVERY SINGLE DISH WAS DELICIOUS!
Best thing about this place is the yummy drinks. We had many different tacos. I thought overall they were ok, some better than others. The ambiance was nice and the server was very helpful and accommodating. Drinks were a bit slow to come out, considering there weren't many people there. I might go back for a drink and the pork tacos.
Extremely cold near the windows where we were placed. Food was amazing but the drinks were very expensive for what you got. We'd go there again, but would only order food.
We have been dining at Al Chulo for more than 2 years and are never disappointed. The food is delightful. The service is friendly and attentive. The margaritas are delicious.
Do not miss the guacamole or the tacos chameleon.
Great hidden gem!
Our first visit to Al Chulo was outstanding. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted warmly by the staff and that continued through our meal. The fish tacos and sope were so good and we left there talking about when we would go back! Highly recommend.
We have been here twice and have been thrilled with the food both times. It's amazing and unique. Their margaritas are small but delicious. A little on the pricey side, but so worth it.
Great food every time! Only downfall is the plastic chairs are very uncomfortable. Looks like they are in the process of switching them out though.
This wasn't tapas....but close, as everything is separate and in small portions.
It wasn't our friend's cup of tea...but we liked it - it is healthy portions -
and fun to share the different options.
Trendy, but not pretentious. Incredible food with interesting ingredients you wouldn’t think to combine (like pomegranate in a taco). One of our favorite restaurants ever.
The service was outstanding. Small plate selection offered a good selection of tasty options. Upscale Mexican food. A perfect evening!
Five of us came on a Friday night. The best thing about this restaurant is their food-it is outstanding. Second time here, and we like to try different selections and are never disappointed with our choices. The service is friendly and the atmosphere is cool and modern. Will come back to try other menu items!
Al Chulo is a wondeeful little place with amazing food and amazing handcrafted coctails. I had the shrimp tacos, fish tacos and guacamole. Their Original and Cucumber margaritas alone are both worth the trip. Martin served is and he was the best waiter ever. Timely and friendly with perfect recommendations. I'll be back!
Fun restaurant with helpful staff. We enjoy the small plate approach and the interesting taco ingredients. Pork and grilled shrimp tacos were delicious and artfully plated, though the shrimp could have been slightly less done. Margaritas were great, especially the original. Great neighborhood find in West Chicago.
Absolutely love the food here. Service was fantastic, and a great experience every time. Hope more people discover this hidden gem so it stays open.
The service and food is unbelievably good!! The fresh Guacamole is sooo good! And my favorite is the shrimp tacos... can’t remember the exact name of them, but they are perfectly seasoned. 😋
We have been here twice in the last know month. Loved it the first time but wanted to write a review after I tried it again. The salsa app is amazing - so much depth to each one...just amazing. Over the 2 visits, we had 7 different tacos, guacamole and everything was awesome. Definitely one of our go-tos for upscale Mexican.
We tried 3 of their margaritas: traditional, grapefruit, and hibiscus. All were excellent and none were sweet. The ceviche tostadas, beer batter fish tacos, shrimp tacos, and nopali sopa were all very good.
We especially recommend the ceviche and the very flavorful fish tacos. And, the helpful service and clean, contemporary ambiance deserve recognition as well.
Fresh, authentic Mexican food served tapas style. Gourmet yet not pretentious. You will not find your typical enchiladas. with rice and beans here. The drinks were hand-muddled individually with fresh fruit and good quality ingredients. Staff goes out of their way to please you. Great music too!
Great surprise to find such inviting and helpful staff, wide selection of healthy options and pleasant manners. I will visit here again, and bring friends!
Good quality “Mexican Fusion” food. If you’re looking for a big burrito, this is not the place. Al Chulo has dishes like tacos, sopas and cemitos. It’s also not cheap, but you do get higher quality food for the price.
The decor is industrial- but don’t let it scare you away. The food is Mexico City street - and it is awesome. I had two different tacos: al Pastor and al Camaleon. Both were perfectly seasoned and, well, perfect. This is my new favorite place.
