Overall great food. I have nothing negative to say. The chef and his wife are extremely welcoming. I will come again next week.
What a find this was! Two of us had the Dine LA menu, two ordered a la carte, and the food was nothing short of fabulous. We have lived in LA for 40 years and never been here. It was great!
Dinning at this restaurant is an culinary experience you will not forget. So much so, you need to go back and try every item on the menu.
We had crab cakes, which had a strange, stringy texture; rib eye, which was almost spot-on, except for the the bland sauce, which lacked depth-of-flavor (mushrooms and a nice red wine in the sauce would have helped); escargot potato shells, which were pretty good flavor-wise, but terrible texture-wise because they cooked the kale, so the spines became hard and stringy, like bits of straw hay that snagged in your throat-- also the potato shells were too thick; and the arugula salad, which had so many different flavors but somehow not the right balance and texture and lacked any exceptional tasting ingredients (certainly no dry farm early girl tomatoes from the Ground Swell farm in Santa Cruz, so it was just a mediocre salad). For what we paid, it was a bit disappointing overall. The service was great though, as was the atmosphere, but I am boggled as to how this restaurant received 4.5 stars on Yelp.
Amazing food and place
Amazing staff, so hospitable. They made such a kind effort to make my girlfriend’s birthday dinner memorable.
I don’t typically leave reviews, but AFA was beyond amazing. From the second we entered, to the moment we left the hospitality was off the charts. Our server Lisa was extremely attentive and had some great conversations with us. Thank you to the chef Christian for stopping by to see how we enjoyed everything, that was something rarely ever see happen. The food itself was astonishing. Highly recommend and we’ll be back!
This is my “go to” restaurant. I love the vibe, the food, the personal touch. My guests from out of town loved it and chef Chris moved us beyond “oohs” and “aha” with a dessert on the house.
Babette & Christian are incredible hosts! My wife and I consider A Food Affair "our place," and we always celebrate special occasions with them. Amazing food. Incredible staff. We love this establishment. Thank you for the memories (and all the ones to come!)
Where do I even begin! This place has never let me down. I've been here about 5 times before, but last night took the cake. The atmosphere is just so enjoyable and the owner is such a warm spirit. You truly feel at peace in the space, and that's before you even open the menu. The food... that's better than home. We started with the bread basket, which the bread has a delicious salt wash to it. Then ordered the cauliflower and Brussel sprouts that were impeccably cooked. I can't recommend those two enough. We also order the garlic truffle pomme frittes which came with delicious cooked full garlic cloves. I ordered the lamb shank which was perfectly cooked and literally fell off the bone. I can vouch that it's just as delicious next day to. My partner ordered the beef bourguignon which was lick the plate good. I didn't try my friends crab cakes but she raved about it. Oh and I almost forgot, the bone marrow was ridiculous. Just do yourself the favor and order it, even if you don't like marrow. We ended dinner with the creme brûlée and what a perfect end to a culinary experience. So glad that I went here instead of a few other options. Really a special little place and I can't wait to come back.
This experience was a real treat. The ambiance and service were both warm and inviting. The wine pours were generous. And the food was homemade delicious. My husband and I enjoyed our meal, and we are eager to go back. Highly recommend. LOVE.
Lovely food and excellent service . Servers and owner were very attentive .
If you want authentic French food without flying to France, this is the place. I had beef Burgundy, which was as good as any I've had in France. At other times I've started with the French onion soup, again, as good as any I've had in France. Ended up with lovely rich chocolate mousse (because it was my birthday.)
From start to finish my experience was absolutely amazing. Lisa the chef/owners daughter was not only knowledgable, but beyond personable. Appetizers, entrees, deserts, and sides had a perfect flavor profile. I’m visiting from New York, and this place truly gave me a memorable experience.
The French onion soup is such a common dish and they cooked it to an awesome extent. and the steak I had there was great too. I love the ambience and the food there.
I was there to celebrate a friend's birthday and we were all blown away by the delicious food and excellent service. Every dish we ordered, from appetizer (Mushroom Torte) to main entrees (Beef Bourguinon and Lamb Shank Tagine), side (Brussel Sprouts), and desserts (Apple Pie & Coconut Pudding) - EVERY dish was delicious, super fresh, and perfectly seasoned. The waiters were super attentive, the chef even came out to say hello to all the tables and was very friendly. I cannot recommend this place enough, definitely will come back and refer to friends!!
Restaurant was a fantastic find!! Fantastic food. Great ambience. And the chef came out and we had a chance to talk with him. As a gift, he brought out two glasses of champagne with cassis, for my friend and I to celebrate our birthdays. Definitely a place to go back to.
The food is always amazing here, we just keep ordering new things and it’s always wonderful!
Impeccable service, excellent food set in a very nice atmosphere.
such a great place to eat! food was incredible! chef came out himself to greet us and even gave my boyfriend a creme brûlée because they overheard me saying it was his birthday. will be back again
Loved the food but honestly the service was lackluster. And felt like we inconvenienced the waitress. I forgot his name
Phoenominal dining experience! Walking into A Food Affair was like walking into my favourite aunt and uncle's home - warm, charming and eclectic, yet sophisticated and inspirational. My husband and I were greeted by the hostess with such a warm and welcoming smile that we sensed she's the owner, which turns out, she is. When we tasted the food, we felt the love put into making each dish and sensed that the chef must be her spouse, which turns out, he is. The dishes are prepared in a way that are pleasing to the eye and pallet; presented with garnishes and sauces one would expect from a French restaurant and at the same time, they each had a home-made look and flavors where we were enjoying spoons full of food and dipping bread into dishes. Toward the end of the evening, the chef came out to greet and thank patrons - it's such a warm gesture that we hardley experience in restaurants.
There's something to be said about a well-operating family restaurant. Thank you Royere family for allowing us to experience your vision and talent. We will definitely be back!
Carmen and Ara
Love the owners, staff and above all the food. This is a true find.
Love this place! The food is amazing and the decor is perfect. I can't wait to go back and try the other dishes on the menu. You MUST try this place.
Food was delicious! However, portion size was wildly variable, with one dish (chicken) normal-sized and the other (crab cakes) not nearly enough food to constitute an entree for an adult.
Best service and the food was delicious
We had a wonderful meal. The food and service met or exceeded our expectations. The Mushroom Tourte and French Onion Soup were both delicious, and the soup wasn’t salty, as it often is. I thoroughly enjoyed the Beef Bourguignon. My spouse ordered the Scottish Salmon, and the house style is medium rare; she asked for medium. When she got 1/4 way into it, it was rare in the middle and she sent it back. Here’s one of the best parts: they could not have been nicer nor more accommodating. They brought us complimentary pomme frites while waiting, and the chef/owner came out to apologize personally, which was very nice and unexpected. His wife and partner was very warm and nice, too. We finished with a lovely slice of Meyer Lemon Pie. We enjoyed the music played and commented on it during our meal, it made a nice atmosphere without being too loud or obnoxious. As it was our anniversary, the chef came back to us at dessert and spoke with us again. We both appreciated the personal, family feel and were made to feel welcome and appreciated. We will definitely return.
GREAT!!!! So few french restaurants in LA that are "real" Awesome food my wife and I love going there - a real gem.
Food was excellent, service was a bit slow but not painfully so. Wine was on point and the steak frites was a crowd pleaser. Will definitely be heading back.
WE have been here many times before going to the Pantages. It's convenient and lovely. The food & service are always great
Bravo, chef !
The bouillabaisse was everything I've expected, light, warming and full of flavor. Everything tasted so fresh. The fish was the main star of the dish and the saffron its co-star. And not to forget the Rosé wine de Provence paired with it... I was in heaven!
I also enjoyed very much the rib eye prime steak with cognac peppercorn sauce, truffle oil pomme frites and a strong red Bordeaux wine.
It was just perfect.
Hard to believe I was in L. A.
This was our first time eating at A Food Affair, but it won’t be our last. There was so much attention to detail and little artistic flourishes in every from the food to the decor and tableware. At the same time it was relaxed and unpretentious. Top 5 meal in LA for us.
I’ve been to this restaurant a few times. It’s always been a lovely experience, they’re very welcoming when you walk in and the restaurant is charming.
one word: perfection! After spending time in France last year I would have sworn there wouldn't be a proper American equivalent. Silly me! Christian and his gorgeous wife, Babette have brought amazing food to the table in this incredible French restaurant. I savored every bite and basked in the warm and welcoming service. I cannot criticize even a single moment of my journey, which started with the mushroom tourte - which was incredibly delicious, and progressed to the grass fed Hangar steak special (medium rare, but of course) and then to the creme brûlée, served with fruit and a lovely medley of chocolate and nuts, which worked incredibly well. Everything was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. The service was immaculately timed in respect for each course and allowing the guest to process the delicious food before commencing the next. I shall return and will be trying the chicken liver, the bone marrow, or the head cheese for appetizer next time... I was a bit spoiled for choice! I walked back to the hotel to aid in digestion, with what was left of an exceptionally fine red (Omen) in my purse (for later!). A divine and perfect French meal in every sense.
My favorite rib eye in town. Chef is amazing and I love that he often comes out to say hello when the meal is complete.
Quiet restaurant, respectful and helpful staff
Amazing food quality, preparation and presentation
Great wines, great food
Excellent French food and attentive service. Reasonably priced.
Food was OK, overpriced. Bone marrow had no marrow.
One of the most authentic French cooking in Los Angeles. Great service. They have a great wine list, but that means the end of "no corkage BYOB", so it's not quite the great deal that it used to be.
